TENANTS VOICE LLAIS TENANTIAID The most important decision to be made on your home since it was built Newsletter of the Swansea Tenants Steering Group Issue 1 January 2006 Tenants Hold the Key to Future of their Homes Swansea Council has decided to give you, as tenants, the choice of staying with the council or transferring the ownership and management of your home to a Community Housing Mutual. This would be a new independent, local not-for-profit registered social landlord with tenants fully involved in decisions made about their homes and services. The council needs £340 million to bring your homes up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard but does not have the money to deliver these improvements. However, by transferring your homes to the new Community Housing Mutual, the money needed to fund these improvements would be accessed. The council is planning to consult all its tenants and leaseholders on this proposal. In order for you to have good quality, impartial information and advice, members of the Tenant Consultative Panel have appointed Heart of Wales Consultancy to be your Independent Tenant Advisors. They will be working closely with a steering group of local tenants (see picture below). A series of meetings and events will be held across the city and county in January and February 2006 to tell you more about the council’s proposals, find out your views and answer any questions you may have frankly and openly. Details of all of these events are listed on pages three and four of this newsletter. Your Independent Tenant Advisors are always on hand to answer your questions and give advice on what the council is proposing. If you want to ask a question, need this newsletter in large print, audio tape or in a community language or want someone to visit you in your home please call Heart of Wales Consultancy FREE on 0800 195 4591. The Swansea Tenants Steering Group, together with Heart of Wales Consultancy, want to hear what all council tenants in Swansea think about this very important issue regarding the future of their homes. Please have your say by coming along to one of the meetings or events listed on pages three and four or by calling the Freephone number at the bottom of this page. You don’t need an appointment and can stay for as little or as long as you like so come along and tell us what you think because your opinions really do matter. If you are unable to come to any of the events and want to arrange a meeting in your area, or need someone from Heart of Wales Consultancy to visit you in your home to talk about the council proposals, please call the Freephone number at the bottom of this page. You can also call the Freephone number if you want this newsletter in large print, Braille, on audio tape or in a community language. Please remember that transfer would not mean that you had to move out of your home. The decision on transfer is yours. Nothing can happen unless the majority of votes cast, in a secret ballot of tenants to be held later next year, is in favour. The council must abide by the decision of the ballot, whatever the outcome. HELP AND ADVICE - FREE.
