The future of our rail network
Our plans for the years up to 2009 will deliver huge capacity growth in DART and Commuter services, and a transformation in the fleet, quality, comfort and frequency of Intercity services. But Iarnród Éireann won’t stop there. There’s more to be done to meet the future needs of our country and communities, with massive population growth predicted along key rail corridors, and new rail links needed to allow the railway play the strongest role it can in meeting the transport needs of Ireland in the years and decades to come. With these projects approved by Government under the Transport 21 Plan, we can set about that task.

15 Iarnród Éireann - Moving into the future
The Interconnector – the link to deliver an Integrated rail system for the East
After Docklands, Kildare Route Project and city centre resignalling, Iarnród Éireann will meet the demand for rail services up to 2015 on current population projections. But more will be needed. The next step is the Interconnector, an underground high capacity rail link which will run from Docklands to Pearse to St Stephen’s Green to Heuston. Together with the electrification of sections of the Maynooth, Drogheda and Kildare routes, it would result in a fully integrated rail network, linking with LUAS and Metro at key points, allowing high quality, high frequency, easy interchange commuting across Leinster.
It will allow increased frequency on all routes, and full integration of all modes. It will complete the process of quadrupling DART and Commuter passenger numbers from 25 million per annum to 100 million per annum.
Bringing Commuter Rail to Meath
Under Transport 21, a strong commuter service for County Meath is to be developed in two phases. In the first phase, we will rebuild the railway from Clonsilla on the Maynooth line to Dunboyne, and a major park 'n' ride site at Pace/M3. In the shorter term, this will allow commuters from around the county avail of rail services, before the planned rebuilding of the line all the way to Navan.
