The future of TV
KTWU officials to explain digital, HDTV in Jan. 24 program
Like the step from black-andwhite to color reception, digital television is being touted as the next great revolution for broadcast media. But along with the advancement comes many questions and possibly some confusion. Rolling Hills hopes to help ease the minds of patrons with a special program, “Digital TV,” at noon Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Belt Library. The free program is a Brown-Bag Luncheon in which patrons are encouraged to bring their lunches. The library will provide drinks and dessert. Officials from KTWU Public Television in Topeka, Kan., will discuss digital television and high-definition television. Legislation in Congress now would make digital the broadcasting standard in 2009. “High definition” and “digital” television do not mean the same thing. Digital television refers to broadcasting a television picture through a digital process. High definition television (HDTV) refers to the quality of the television picture. High definition is the highest quality broadcast signal that viewers will be able to receive on digital television. Not all digital channels have to be HDTV, but all digital broadcasts will look better than the current analog system. Digital television lets stations offer viewers a high definition program or choose to split their signal and offer several different types of programs at the same time. In the digital future, viewers can watch a program and then download a wealth of supplemental information such as text, maps, graphics, audio and extra video, plus provide all this in CD-quality sound. Children’s book character Amelia Bedelia, portrayed by Rolling Hills’ children’s librarian Saundra Keiffer, answers questions recently from the second-graders at Parkway Elementary School in St. Joseph. The classes, taught by Mary Kay Giles and Vicki Steele, earned a visit from Amelia by having all students sign up for a library card from either Rolling Hills or St. Jospeh Public Library during “National Library Card Sign-Up Month” in September. The classes also received free books supplied by the two libraries. will be open for extended hours that weekend. The hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan. 21, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22.

Splitting signal provides more options
From Page 1 “It really is a whole different world with digital television,” said Barb Read, Rolling Hills head of public services, who serves on the KTWU Community Advisory Board. Beginning Jan. 9, KTWU, Digital Channel 23, will broadcast three program streams. Channel 23.1 is KTWUHD, which consists of high-quality, highdefinition programming 24 hours a day. The content for this program stream is provided by PBS. KTWU’s second channel (23.2) is the simulcast of KTWU, analog channel 11. Everything scheduled on channel 11 can be seen on the digital channel 24 hours a day. The third channel (23.3) is KTWUCREATE. The CREATE service is a new 24-hour channel that will feature lifestyle, how-to and travel programming, as well as a daily children’s block.

Video equipment, staff to benefit from grants
Rolling Hills recently received two federal grants that will be used to upgrade its videoconferencing equipment and provide for a staff training day in 2006. The library received $1,695 to buy a scanner to convert computer images for use with the library’s videoconference equipment. Rolling Hills was one of 10 Missouri libraries to receive the videoconferencing upgrade grants. A second grant worth $2,690 was received to fund the library’s staff development day planned for March 17. Consultant Pat Wagner of Denver, Colo., will conduct the training. The library will be closed March 17 so all library staff members can participate. The grants were provided by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Missouri State Library. The institute provides funds to states to support library needs, either on a statewide or local basis. Federal funds primarily support activities using technology for information sharing between libraries and other community services. It also funds programs making library resources more accessible to urban, rural and low income residents or others who have difficulty using library services. January 2006 Library News 3
