                                 Challenging Season
The greatest event that has happened in our world was when Jesus came to live here. He came
to show us what God really wants for us and the best way to live. He came knowing that He
would die to fulfill His mission. That is what Christmas is really about, but there are so many
who do not know that. In October the stores started to advertise their Christmas items. Way
back when I was growing up that never started until Thanksgiving. More and more it seems
that the commercialization of Christmas and not the real reason is being pushed. Christmas is
a chance to let God work in our lives in new ways, if we will allow Him to. We must be open
to let Christ work in us. When Jesus was born He was born in a manger, because there was no
room for Him in the inn. I hope that this year Jesus can find room in us. We can be open to let
Jesus do something new in us this year. Let Jesus really work in you and see what can happen
not just on Christmas Day, but for the rest of your life.
May you have a very blessed Christmas,

Advent Family Devotional: Week 3 - Joy
Third Sunday of Advent: December 13, 2009

Key Scripture: The Song of Mary
How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, ...
... He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. ..."
- Luke 1:47-55

(During the devotional you will light 3 purple candles on your Advent Wreath)
1st Reader: This is the third Sunday in Advent. Today we light three purple candles. The first Sunday, we lit the candle of Hope. On
the second Sunday, we lit the candle of Peace. Today, we light the candle of Joy.
One thing that sometimes happens as we get ready to celebrate Jesus' birth is we expect to be happy all the time. Joy is not the same
as happy. Joy is a deeper feeling created by knowing that God cares for us. Joy is remembering that God sent Jesus so we would
always know of God's care. During Advent, we pray that we may remember again God's gift of Jesus to the world and know the joy
that gift brings to all people.
(Light the first, second, and third candles.)
ALL: Sing Christmas songs, end with "Joy to the World," (#246, The United Methodist Hymnal )
2nd Reader: When we look at the third candle, we remember God's promise of joy. God promised to send a Savior to the people.
Today we read from the Gospel of Luke. In the Scripture, we read Mary's song of praise and joy. There must have been times when
Mary was frightened, worried, fearful, and sad. But we have these words of joy, even in a time when she was unsure of the future.
Her words can guide us to look for the joy of God, even when things may be uncertain for us.
3rd Reader: Read Luke 1:47-55.
Discussion: How privileged we are to have this beautiful song of Mary. Can you imagine her singing the words written in Scripture?
It is a testimony to her faith and joy at being chosen as God's servant.
Who are the people in our world who need God's joy?
What are our hopes for joy in our world today?
How do we help others know that God gives joy?
Dear God: Thank you for your son, Jesus. Thank you for the joy remembering Jesus' birth brings to us today. Help us live in such a
way that our words and our actions help others know of the joy you give. AMEN

Advent Family Devotional: Week 4 – Love
Fourth Sunday of Advent: December 20, 2009

Key Scripture:
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will
not perish but have eternal life."
- John 3:16

(NOTE: Some Advent Wreaths may have one pink candle. The pink candle is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent and traditionally
signifies the whitening from purple (or blue) to white, which the color of the Christ Candle in the center.)

(During the devotional you will light the 4 purple candles (or 3 purple and 1 pink) on your Advent Wreath)
1st Reader: This is the fourth Sunday in Advent. Today we light the 4 purple candles (OR 3 purple candles and the pink candle). The
first week, we lit the candle of Hope. On the second week, we lit the candle of Peace. The third week we lit the candle of Joy.
Today, we light the candle of Love.
One verse that many memorize and remember on this day is John 3:16, "God so loved the world..." Some people may not know the
love of other people. That makes it harder for them to understand God's love. During Advent, we pray that we may remember again
God's gift of Jesus to the world and know that God's love for all people is the reason for this gift.
(Light the first, second, third, and fourth candles.)
ALL: Sing Christmas songs, end with "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," (#218, The United Methodist Hymnal.)
2nd Reader: When we look at the second candle we remember God's love. When we read the words of the psalmist, we know of
God's greatness and care. We remember God's love at Advent when we remember that God sent Jesus to us to help us know that God
is loving and just.
3rd Reader: Read Isaiah 11:1-10.
Discussion: When we think of God's love, we might not always think of the words of the prophets. But when we read this picture of
the peaceable kingdom, we are amazed by God's love that allows a child to lead.
Who are the people in our world who need the message of God's love?
What are our hopes for how people today can receive the message of God's love?
How do we help others know God's love?
Dear God: Thank you for your son, Jesus. Thank you for the words found in our Bible that help us remember your love and care.
Help us see how we can bring God's message to the people we meet in our schools, at our jobs, and in our neighborhoods. Help us be
messengers of God's love for everyone. AMEN

Please join us in praying for our children…
                                                  Adapted from Ina J. Hughs
                                       We pray for our children,
                                  Who sneak popsicles before supper,
Who erase holes in math workbooks,
Who can never find their shoes.
And we pray for those who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
Who can't bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
Who were born in places we wouldn't be caught dead,
Who never go to the circus,
Who live in an x-rated world.
We pray for children who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of Dandelions,
Who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money.
We pray for those who never get dessert,
Who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
Who watch their parents watch them die,
Who can't find any bread to steal,
Who don't have any rooms to mess up or to clean up,
Whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,
                                       Whose monsters are real.
We pray for children who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
Who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
                                        Who like ghost stories,
Who shove dirty clothes under the bed and never rinse out the tub,
Who get visits from the tooth fairy,
Who don't like to be kissed in front of the carpool,
Who squirm in church and scream in the phone,
Whose tears we sometimes laugh at and whose smiles can make us cry.
And we pray for those whose nightmares come in the daytime,
                                        Who will eat anything,
Who have never seen a dentist,
                                    Who aren't spoiled by anybody,
who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
Who live and move, but have no being.
We pray for children who want to be carried,
And for those who will never walk, or see, or hear, or learn,
And for those we will never give up on
And for those who don't get a second chance.
                                      For these are our children.
We pray for them. We pledge our commitment to care for them.
We gladly accept responsibility for them.
We will make our world a safe home for them.
                                           We will love them.

                                    2010 Offering Envelopes
As a cost savings measure, the Finance Committee has decided to use the surplus 2009 offering
envelopes for the 2010 giving year. The number printed in the top left of the envelope identifies the
giver and is used when posting giving to your account. It is also helpful if you write your name on
the envelope. If you are not on the official church role (a member of the church) but would like a box
of giving envelopes, please contact Sue Halstead at or 430-2870. If you have any
question, please don’t hesitate to call or email. “ Each man should give what he has decided in his
heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Cor 9:7
