THE FUTURE OF COLLABORATION
A study of collaborative work environments in Oil & Gas, and GUI-based sources of competitive advantage
Together with Kristensen Consulting, Cyviz is performing a major study on collaborative environments in Oil & Gas. Respondents from 50 companies will make this the most comprehensive research to date on the topic. The purpose of the study is to understand how Oil & Gas professionals currently apply visualization technologies – understand requirements for future best practice – and take R&D actions to close this gap.
INTRODUCTION Collaboration is a hot topic, and recent research demonstrates that collaboration can be an important driver of productivity, innovation and competitiveness. To identify key drivers of productivity in collaborative work environments in the Oil & Gas industry and further improve the support for collaborative processes, Cyviz currently undertakes the major survey “The Future of Collaboration” together with Kristensen Consulting. The main objective of this survey is to explore and document how collaborative work environments can contribute to improved work flow, productivity and support for creative knowledge work in the Oil & Gas industry. The survey serves as an important reference input for the development of the next generation collaborative work environments, based on transparent, activity-centric user interfaces. These user interfaces will enable smart collaborative working and allow the user to focus on business processes rather than the technologies supporting them. Your input is highly appreciated and of outmost value to us. All survey respondents will receive a free copy of the final report.
MOTIVATION FOR SURVEY Cyviz is currently developing the next generation user interface platform for its portfolio of systems, making collaboration simple, accessible and effective in real life contexts. This platform is called the Cyviz Display Controller (CDC), focusing on the front end of collaborative work environments.
The user interface is an essential component in collaborative work environments, as a team's ability to maintain full mental focus on the processes at hand is absolutely critical when working collaboratively with knowledge-intensive tasks. Research shows that knowledge-intensive tasks such as collaborative problem solving and interpretation of complex visual content are particularly sensitive to interruptions, caused by e.g. setting up a user interface according to process or project requirements. Such interruptions, even when lasting for less than three seconds, can effectively destroy the momentum in a creative process that a team has spent 10-15 minutes to build up. If these interruptions happen frequently, this dramatically reduces the productivity and effectiveness of these processes. Intuitive, effective user interfaces can dramatically improve work flow and productivity across different tasks, and this survey will collect and analyze data relevant for the development of such user interfaces.
SURVEY DESCRIPTION The survey is a two-step process involving an online survey and an experience survey. 1. Online survey (250 respondents): The online survey will highlight topics for further exploration in an experience survey where key issues are explored in further depth. 250 Oil & Gas professionals will be invited to participate. All online survey respondents will receive a free copy of the final report. 2. Experience survey (50 respondents): The second step will involve interviews of selected end users, an in-depth exploration of experiences with existing user interfaces for collaborative work environments, and an exploration of expectations and requirements for new developments in this area.
SURVEY REPORT: THE FUTURE OF COLLABORATION Results from the survey will be documented in the industrial research report “The Future of Collaboration” summarizing key findings and recommendations. The report will have restricted access, and will provide a comprehensive set of recommendations on industry best practices and how to use collaborative work environments as an enabler of competitive advantage. The report will also include specific guidance on how companies can use collaboration strategically as a driver of productivity and innovation. Cyviz will use the survey results as reference input to the development of the next generation process- and activity-centric collaborative work environments.
