Water Baptism… At The Waters Edge Baptism is a distinct, biblically commanded responsibility for everyone who asks Jesus to be the Savior and Leader of their life. Obedience to this command will lead you to a pathway of submission to the Lordship of Christ. In Mark 16:15,16, Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” When the gospel was first preached, those who heard were convinced of its truth and asked the disciples, “What shall we do (to be saved)?” The disciple Peter responded, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus after acknowledging Him as your Lord and Savior!” (Acts 2:38) Who Should Be Baptized (and Why)? All Who Believe In Jesus Christ As Lord And Savior Matthew 28:18-20 (NASB) 18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” In Obedience To The Command Of Scripture (see above) Following The Example of Christ Matthew 3:14-17 (NASB) 14But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *permitted Him. 16And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, 17and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well- pleased.” Can Children Be Baptized? Acts 16:15 (NASB) 15And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. Acts 16:33 (NASB) 33And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. Mark 10:13-16 (NASB) 13And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. 14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it at all.” 16And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands upon them. What Is Baptism Anyway? Water baptism is commanded by Jesus. In water baptism, we submit our lives to the Lordship of Jesus. We surrender to His authority and rulership. (Mark 16:15-16, Matthew 3:14, 15) Water baptism is an action of commitment to the burial of your past and old ways. To live the baptized life is to allow the Holy Spirit to resurrect you on a daily basis, lifting you above the dead habits of the past and into the newness of life for today and tomorrow. (Romans 6:3,4) Water baptism represents a circumcision of our hearts (a cutting away of those behaviors that God may want to remove from our lives) and a “marking” of our lives as the blessed of the Lord, so new life and the power of God’s fullest promise for our lives may be realized. (Colossians 2:11,12) Water baptism is intended to be a moment of deliverance. Bondages and yokes are broken. Your future is opened to the fullest possibilities of freedom in Christ. You can arise and walk in the life giving power of Jesus. Water baptism can be a miracle moment! (I Corinthians 10:1,2) Through water baptism, the promise of the fullness of the Holy Spirit can be experienced. We are not only to be baptized; we are to live the baptized life. Living the baptized life means abiding in that fullness. (Acts 2:38) Baptism is not simply a ritual or ceremony. Through baptism, we appropriate the full worth, potential, power and possibilities of this imponderable point of partnership with Christ. Be baptized! Live baptized! Just as Jesus was baptized, and the voice of God was heard, “This is My Son, in Whom I am well pleased,” you too will sense God’s words reverberate in your heart……... “I am pleased with you.” I Declare My Intentions To Immerse Myself In The Spirit Led Life Matthew 3:16 (NASB) 16And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, Acts 2:38 (NASB) 38And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I Desire To Walk In The Power of The Resurrected Life Romans 6:3-4 (NASB) 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. I Invite The Power of God To Extinguish The Things That Would Enslave Me 1 Corinthians 10:1-2 (NASB) 1For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; Isaiah 43:16-19 (NASB) 16Thus says the Lord, Who makes a way through the sea And a path through the mighty waters, 17Who brings forth the chariot and the horse, The army and the mighty man (They will lie down together and not rise again; They have been quenched and extinguished like a wick): 18“Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. 19“Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert. I Consecrate My Tomorrows And My Destiny As One Marked By God Colossians 2:8-12 (NASB) 8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
