                       CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE
LHHVI is one of the only centers in Manhattan to o er the full complement of
minimally invasive heart surgery. LHH surgeons are able to perform coronary
artery bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement, atrial brillation ablation, and
remodeling of the heart, all minimally invasively. e rst totally endoscopic
coronary artery bypss surgery to be performed on a beating heart in New York was
performed by LHH surgeons in 2009. LHH is one of the few hospitals in the
nation to o er integrated care of aortic disease, which involves collaboration
between cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, struc-
tural cardiology and internal medicine. is is in keeping with a tradition of excel-
lence begun in 1938, when Lenox Hill Hospital cardiologists performed the rst
angiogram in the U.S. In 1978, Hospital cardiologists performed the rst ever
coronary angioplasty. In 1991, they implanted one of the rst coronary stents in
NYC, and in 1994 performed the nation's rst minimally invasive direct coronary
artery bypass surgery.
Today, LHHVI physicians and surgeons continue to o er a comprehensive
approach to total cardiac and vascular care with the largest carotid stent program
in the nation (2004), and the largest minimally invasive heart assist program in the
tri-state area (2005). In 2008, the rst 256 Slice Computer Tomographic (CT)
Scanner in the Northeastern United States was installed at Lenox Hill Hospital,
making it one of only three hospitals in the country to acquire this advanced
cardiovascular imaging system. Images from the scanner show the coronary arteries
with extreme clarity making it easier to detect and treat structural heart disease,
peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery disease. As leaders in the eld,
LHHVI continue to develop groundbreaking techniques to minimize heart
damage and speed recovery.
