Anniversary of the Gornergrat Bahn: A sublime experience for 111 years
The risk-filled, rugged and mysterious world of the Alps has attracted and fascinated an ever
greater number of people since the 18th century. Visitors have sought a sense of closeness to
the majestic snow-covered mountains, wanting to discover the wonders of nature and conquer
the summits. Exactly 111 years ago, on the 20th August 1898, the Gornergrat Bahn commenced
operation – as Switzerland's first electrical cog railway.
Anyone who wishes to become acquainted with the most picturesque facets of the Alpine world
today will quickly realise one thing - seeing the Gornergrat at first hand is a must. Various
events and promotions have been planned this year to celebrate the anniversary. The
20th August 2009 awaits with numerous surprises in store: every visitor will receive a gift, every
111th will be presented with an additional memento. On this day, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn
and the Gornergrat Bahn will also extend an attractive special offer. The musical supporting
program and a film containing historic and current footage will round off the offer on the
Gornergrat 3’089 m.
