Overvoltage protection in railway networks

R VL Overvoltage protection in railway networks
RVL is designed for overvoltage protection of
personnel and equipment in D.C. rail traction
systems.
The voltage limiter is installed between the
current return path and structures laying
adjacent to the rails (signalling, telecommu-
nication and electrical equipment, catenary
poles, etc.)
In case of overvoltages, RVL generates a
durable conductive path between the
overloaded area and the substation. This
results to increased current loads that are
sensed at the substation, tripping the safety
switch and thus protecting personnel and
equipment.
Overvoltages generated by lightning, with time
duration less than 3 ms, are limited effectively
by Raycap’s patented surge suppression
module (Strikesorb®). Over-voltages with time
duration more than 3 ms are limited by a
thyristor that has a high-energy capability.
