BANKING

Bank Accounts:
In the U.K. most bank accounts are free of charges until the account holder becomes overdrawn. In
Australia however, all bank accounts have some associated costs and taxes attached to them and it is
clearly up to you to find the account that will best suit your needs.
Westpac employees may have two staff Classic Plus accounts and one Bonus Saver account or a
Westpac One account. These accounts are exempt from the monthly service fee.
All other fees and charges apply as per the public product. This includes transaction charges, ATM
charges at other bank or overseas ATMs and bank cheque fees. Details relating to concessions on
banking products can be obtained from the Westpac Employee Advantage site upon your
commencement.
A cash card is likely to be the main source for obtaining your funds and can also be used to make
purchases in supermarkets, department stores etc. This type of transaction is referred to as an
EFTPOS purchase (Electronic Funds Transaction Point of Sale).

Accessing Your Money:
Whilst Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) are common, you will find major retail bank branches are open
between 9.30am to 4.00pm on weekdays.

ACCOMMODATION

When looking for accommodation you will probably find that unlike the U.K. the majority of flats, houses
and townhouses are rented out unfurnished, although you may be lucky enough to stumble across one
or two that are furnished. (You will come across the term „unit‟ rather than flat in Australia). Costs will
naturally vary from area to area and the closer you live to the city the higher the rental cost is likely to
be. As per the U.K. a property is secured with a bond payment (equal to one month‟s rent) together
with the first month‟s rent in advance.

The main newspapers outlining rental accommodation include:

Area Newspaper
All Sydney Morning Herald (Main days Wed & Sat)
North (Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay) Mosman Daily
East (Double Bay, Bondi, Coogee) Wentworth Courier
South (Kogarah, Hurstville, Carlton) St George Leader
Northern Beaches (Manly, Balgowlah) Manly Daily

The main real estate agents include:

LJ Hooker, Nationwide Realty, Ray White, First National, Laing + Simmons, Raine & Horne, Richardson
& Wrench. For a local listing of telephone numbers, please see „R‟ for real estate agents in the Yellow
Pages

Rented accommodation is usually highly sought after. You may find yourself viewing a property with a
number of other interested parties. Should you decide that you want to apply for a property you will be
required to complete an application form which will ask you to nominate referees. You will then be
advised in due course by the estate agent or owner as to whether or not you have been successful.

When you have secured a property it is important to conduct an inspection report listing faults and
breakages prior to physically moving in. Ensure your initial inspection is thorough as when you‟re
moving out the agent will conduct a second inspection to ensure you‟re eligible for your bond. In the
meantime your bond will have been lodged with the Tenancy Association and for the duration of its
lodgement, it earns interest which you as the tenant receive when you claim your bond back.

ACCOMMODATION

Telephone
Telephones require a reconnection fee of approximately $50 and a monthly rental fee (line rental and
telephone hire) of approximately $15 per month. These costs are dependant upon the equipment and
services you subscribe to. Your telephone account can be itemised and can also be delivered once per
month as opposed to quarterly.

It pays to shop around when deciding which service provider to use regarding the costs of your calls.
The following service providers supply special deals regarding local, national and international calls,
however, many more service providers are listed in the Yellow Pages. Depending on your needs, one
of the providers below should meet your budgetary requirements:

Connection Providers:

          Telstra 132 200
          Optus 1300 301 937
          AAPT Smartchat 1300 651 414

Electricity
Connection Provider:

          Energy Australia 131 53 5

No connection fee is required, however a security deposit of $120 is required. This deposit is
refundable when you pay four bills by the due date or when you close your account. The deposit can be
waived if you choose „direct debit‟ as your method of payment.

Gas
Connection Provider:

AGL 131 606

Gas has an establishment fee of $20 and requires a deposit of $100. This deposit is refundable when
you show two years good payment or when you close the account. Like electricity, the deposit can be
waived should you choose „direct debit‟ as your payment method.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

Doctors
Unlike the U.K. where you are generally allocated a G.P. close to where you live, in Australia you can
go to a Doctor of your choice and be registered with more than one. A listing of local Medical
Centres/Practitioners can be found in the Yellow Pages telephone directory under „M‟ for medical
practitioners.

PAYMENT - Many doctors and clinics run a “bulk billing” system, which means that you will be able to
settle the bill by using your Medicare card and not cash. The alternative is to pay the bill on the spot
and take the receipt to the Medicare office for reimbursement of your expenditure.

Medicare
Unless you decide to take out your own private health insurance you may need to register with
„Medicare‟ which is the Australian equivalent to the NHS. You need to be aware that there are certain
exclusions to the Medicare Scheme for temporary visa residents. Medicare does not cover
medical/hospital treatment that is not immediately necessary; elective surgery; glasses/contact lenses;
dental/chiropractic services; ambulance services, allied health services or elective treatment.

Residents from the UK may enrol for Medicare by providing appropriate identification i.e passport, visa
and one other form of identification, and a current NHS card or certificate. Residents from the Republic
of Ireland do not have access to Medicare, but may obtain treatment at a hospital by producing their
passport.

Medicare enquiries can be made Monday to Friday between 9:00am - 4:30pm on 132 011. For a listing
of your local offices, please refer to „M‟ for Medicare in the L-Z white pages.

Private Health Care
All secondees must have private healthcare insurance. Costs and coverage do vary, so research
closely to match your requirements. Our own research indicates that Australian Health Insurance
(www.aushealth.com) part of the International Medical Assistance Network (IMAN International Pty Ltd)
offer the most competitive and comprehensive insurance – the costs of which start at about
$168/quarter.

TAXATION

Tax Scales:
The taxation system in Australia is by means of PAYE (Pay As You Earn). Like the UK, employers
deduct tax from your weekly pay and thus you receive the net amount.

GST
In Australia a goods and services tax is added to most consumer goods.

Tax File Number (TFN)
Try to do this as soon as possible as it takes a few weeks for the application to be processed. Be
aware that after 28 days without a tax file number you will incur a considerably higher tax rate. To apply
for a TFN you will be required to complete an application form and you will be asked by the Australian
Taxation Office (ATO) to provide suitable ID i.e your passport. Sometimes it is necessary to provide
another form of identification. Once your application has been processed you will be notified by post.
On receipt of your TFN you will need to notify your Payroll Manager of your details immediately to avoid
incurring a higher tax rate. The main ATO‟s include:

TAXATION

Tax Allowances: Living Away from Home/Food
 You may elect to have part of your salary paid in the form of accommodation and additional food
costs while living away from home, which provides you with a tax benefit. The company‟s policies
and taxation legislation on these benefits are as follows:
 Only a reasonable cost of accommodation is considered to be exempt fringe benefit tax. A
reasonable cost of accommodation is 25% of cash salary for a single person and 33% of estimated
cash salary .Percentages in excess of these cannot be subject to the fringe benefit exemption.
 Reasonable food cost limits are set by the Australian Taxation Office.
 The maximum amount available for salary sacrifice is 40% of your cash salary.
 To include your partner in this allowance, your partner needs to meet the criteria of an „eligible
family member‟. Your partner must be your spouse (this includes de facto spouse) and his/her
usual place of residence in the UK must have been the same as your usual place of residence
before coming to Australia. To be entitled to this allowance, it must be your intention to return to the
   UK when your visa expires.

How to claim your LAFH
 So that we can pay this money without deducting tax, you will need to submit a copy of your rental
agreement to your Manager in Sydney. You will also be required to complete a Package Election
Worksheet to facilitate sacrifice of salary to cover rental payments and food costs.
 The cost of rental accommodation will then be paid for you on a monthly basis and reasonable food
costs will be credited to your account on a monthly basis.
