The Bayonne resident is a Nursing major whose p o s i t i ve personal experience and great desire to give others the same care she received led her to choose the nursing profession. A member of Phi Theta Kappa since September 2005, Kim has a 3.6 GPA.
Jonathan Runde Awarded Jersey Journal/ Peter Weiss Memorial Scholarship
Jonathan Runde is the recipient of the Je r s ey Jo u r n a l / Peter Weiss Memorial Scholarship 2005-2006. A Jersey City resident who is majoring in Liberal Arts, Jonathan would l i ke to transfer to Rutgers-Newark after completing his HCCC studies, eventually obtain his Master’s degree and write books. He has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa since February 2005 and maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Bishop Arias Publishes Book Mandy Otero Shoots for the Gold
Board Member Mandy Otero attended the Canadian Airgun Grand Prix in Toronto from February 24-26 and was awarded Second Expert and the Gold Medal for the Three Men Team. This is the first time in many years that the United States earned the Gold Medal in an air rifle competition. Mr. Otero has represented the United States at this event more than ten times.
Board Member Bishop David Arias recently published his book, Spanish-Americans: Lives and Faces. The book is a compilation of biographies of Spanish and Hispanic individuals who made significant contributions to this country.
HCCC Foundation Elects New Officers
At the March 8th meeting, new officers for the HCCC Foundation were elected: Paul Silverman (Chairman) President, MDC Logistics. Paul has been on the HCCC Foundation Board since November 2000. Ronald Schwarz (Vice Chairman) Senior Vice President, Independence Community Bank—Consumer Banking Division. Ronald has been on the Foundation Board since February 2000. Philip Johnston (Treasurer) President, Johnston Communications. Phil has been on the HCCC Foundation Board since February 2000. Chanda Gibson (Secretary) Vice President, Corporate Services and Real Estate, Goldman Sachs & Co. Chandra has been on the HCCC Foundation Board since February 2003.

Hudson County Community College Commencement 2006
This year, our Commencement ceremonies were held on Wednesday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). More than 600 students were awarded diplomas and the keynote speaker was Sonia Manzano, a writer and cast member of “Sesame Street, whose pioneering work in children’s television and ” literature has been recognized with Emmy and Peabody Awards. The Heritage Award was conferred upon Joseph F Scott, former HCCC . President, who served from 1977 to 1987 .

HCCC Foundation Holds Eighth Annual Gala
On December 8, 2005, the HCCC Foundation held its Eighth Annual Holiday Extravaganza at the Stony Hill Inn,
Hackensack. The event included a few “firsts” and a wonderful surprise. Last ye a r, the Foundation awarded its First Annual “Distinguished Service Award” to Paul M. Pantozzi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Provident Bank. A graduate of Rutgers U n i ve r s i ty, the Graduate School of Savings Banking at Brown U n i ve r s i ty and the Exe c u t i ve Development School at Fairfield University, Mr. Pantozzi has served the community in a variety of roles. The Foundation also held the first “50-50” Raffle Drawing in its history at the event. Last, but not least, The Provident Bank Foundation announced the increase of its Endowment by $50,000 to $150,000.

The HCCC Foundation introduced last year its first Raffle. Tickets were sold at $100 each awarding three prizes: First Prize, $20,000, Second Prize, $3,000, and Third Prize, $2,000.
