									Broadband

As broadband access technologies are becoming increasingly available in the UK it is changing the way in which
people work. One example of this is the ability for staff to telecommute, effectively providing remote staff with a
similar environment as if they were physically present in their local office.
Broadband Access Technologies
Currently in the UK there are competing broadband access technologies being brought to address last mile con-
nectivity:
* Cable Modem
* Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
* Fibre
* Wireless Ethernet

Cable
As an alternative to existing copper phone wires, cable companies are providing broadband access by upgrading
their plant to carry data & voice services in addition to traditional video services. The cable modem typically pro-
vides an Ethernet interface to a P.C. or to a router for multiple P.C. connectivity. Today's cable networks general-
ly deliver data with download speeds roughly between 500Kbp & 2mbps and upstream speeds of 128 kbps.
Newer generation cable mode technologies will significantly increase the available bandwidth to further enable
interactive applications such as videoconferencing & increase the data transfer rates of remote office connectivity.

DSL
DSL is a technology for transmitting high-speed data over ordinary telephone wires. A DSL modem or router is
installed at the Customer premises & at the Central Office (CO).
Different variants of DSL exist to address different technology trade-offs that can be made regarding different
network environments and applications. One of the key trade-offs is "reach" from the CO.
Asymmetrical DSL or ADSL, is primarily used for residential services. ADSL takes advantage of the fact that there
is much more cross-talk interference at the CO end of the connection than the subscriber end due to the large
volume of cabling at the CO.

ADSL can currently provide data rates up to 8 Mbps from the Network to the Subscriber & 1 Mbps from the sub-
scriber to the Network. Therefore ADSL works well for today's home user where the majority of bandwidth is
from the Network to the Subscriber.
Symmetrical DSL is a very cost-effective solution for Small to Medium Enterprises (SME's) offering a competitive
alternative to more expensive E1, T1 lines.

Fibre
Fibre-optic technology offers a mechanism to enable sufficient network bandwidth for the delivery of new services
and applications. A typical implementation would mean a fibre optic cable being run from the CO to an area
(Town / City). Passive optical splitters are used to provide point-to-multipoint connectivity. This is referred to as a
Passive Optical Network or PON. In the case of Fibre-to-the-cabinet or Fibre-to-the-curb the signal is converted
to connectivity to the subscribers via copper pair wires.
