Information on Access

The WCA need to know what you, paddlers, are doing about access to water? Are any
readers of eNews on local access forums (LAFS), are you lobbying the Welsh Assembly
Government. Have you had any useful replies from any politicians?

Opportunities within Access
The WCA is in the process of finalising its campaign drive for changing legislation. To
enable this to happen we need motivated paddlers in all areas to help secure a change
in legislation. These are voluntary posts that enable grass roots paddlers to get involved
and make a difference to how access is available to paddlers.
What we need,
Local River Access Officer:
Our existing network of people who know the rivers has a few gaps and we need
motivated, contactable people to continue feeding information to the public and
       to the Regional Access Officers.
Local Campaign Officer
The major part of seeking a legislative change is organising people to campaign
effectively. We need people in the local area who can get support together and
lobby to Welsh Assembly from their own local area.
Regional Campaign Officer
This is a mainly organisational role, recruiting and supporting the Local
Campaign officers. This will mean feeding information from/to the National
      Officer.
If you are interested in any of these roles or think that you can help in another way,
please contact Ash, Access Development Officer on
01341 422692 or cwmbychan@aol.com

Paddle to Westminster – Wednesday 9th November

The paddle will take place on Wednesday 9th November as this fits in with tide times and
other political activities. We still have final permissions to obtain but we are getting
there!!
Due to the nature of the water on the tideway and the time of year it is important that
you are aware of your own capabilities on moving, and often, unpredictable choppy
water. We are hoping to arrange safety cover but we need competent paddlers and
might have to limit numbers to 100 due to lack of car parking. We need to know if you
are planning to come for car parking, security clearance etc so please e mail us if you
are intend to attend, either paddling or just to meet us at the end of our paddle. A group
of us will also go in to the House and meet our MPS and present our case. More info to
follow....
We will invite all MPs to come along to the presentation but please do contact your local
MP and encourage them to come along and hear us present the case for greater access
to inland rivers.

                                   Welsh Polo League
Over the last three years the Welsh league has steadily developed, where we are at the
stage that the number of teams would justify two divisions. As with this season we would
hope to host the games at a variety of venues both indoor and outdoors. If you are not
yet involved but would be interested in entering a team in the league, either Junior or
Senior please contact Tony Griffiths (LDO Polo).

Local Coaching Organiser - all regions

The WCA is looking to reactivate/initiate the Local Coaching Organiser network which
has never really got of the ground in Wales - my intention is ultimately to get 3
volunteers in each region who would coordinate at least one development, participation
or coaching event in their local region per year in conjunction with their RCO. Nothing
too big just a local event aimed at the needs of the local paddling community - Small in
scale but targeted. Examples might include;

Development - Small fun competition, an opportunity to try a new event, an opportunity
to get coached in a particular discipline etc

Participation - these events are more targeted toward getting new people into paddling
and might focus on a particular group within the community e.g. the newly retired,
youngsters, women and girls etc

Coaching events are more aimed at recruiting new coaches by help them with some of
the prerequisites, or providing an opportunity for current coaches to access some further
training in a new area e.g. Welcome to Polo coaching, dealing with tandem crews in
open canoe etc

This list is by no means exhaustive and is just an indicator of the sort of thing we're
after. An LCO would not have to necessarily deliver the workshops or events -unless
they felt they had the skills to - more to coordinate the events.

My thought is that as they're local, they could act as a local contact for the WCA , and
they would best know what local paddlers might want or need and how best the WCA
could support this development, suitable venues etc. They would coordinate with their
RCO and I'd help with promotion of each event etc

We already have recruited LDO for surf, polo and racing, as well as an LCO for the
Brecon area so if you’re interested please contact me for a quick chat. We can then look
at how we can best get your ideas off the ground, suitable time, place, staffing etc

I'll look forward to hearing from you - Sid

Do you know a coach that deserves some recognition for all
their hard work and achievements?
Well if you do here’s your chance to get them some recognition. The BCU are looking
for nominations for the Geoff Good Coach of the Year Award. There are in fact three
awards available:
1 Junior Coach of the year – for those working with the younger end of the
        spectrum.
2 Senior Coach of the Year – for those working with the over 18’s
3 Competition Coach of the year.
The awards are not only for those working with high performers but any coach who
achieves results, is dedicated and deserves some recognition.
If you would like to nominate any coach for the above awards please send as much
detail about them and their coaching to me, who’s nominating them and why they
deserve to win ASAP and I’ll ensure that they’re put forward at a national level – Sid.
