Vision Statement:
Good Shepherd Catholic School is a community growing together in faith, based on the
model of Jesus Christ. We are guided by the traditions and beliefs of the Catholic Church.
We strive to foster the development of the total child, integrating faith, life and culture. We
acknowledge many gifts within one Spirit.

God judges us according to our deeds not the coat we wear.
That truth is about everything, but higher still is truthful
living. Know that we attain God when we love, and that victory
only endures in the consequence of which no-one is defeated.

Congratulations to the First Communicant classes. The children
were very respectful and beautifully presented on this, their
First Communion Day. Congratulations to all involved. I would
particularly like to thank Miss Olivia Stanley, Mrs Rosalba
Pettina and Mrs Koralyn Ronchi for supporting the parents in
preparing their children for this vital sacrament of initiation.

I would particularly like to thank Ms Fiona Clancy and her
wonderful choir for their beautiful singing at both masses.

The gratitude of all concerned goes to the children
and parents who made the effort to attend both
masses to be in the choir.

would ask parents to make the time to update the term calendar issued

This Friday 15 June 2007 the school will come together to
celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for a
9:00am Mass. I would encourage everybody who is able to
attend to join in the celebration.

Parents are reminded that they should never approach or speak
to another families’ child in a manner that could cause concern.

I would also ask that parents consider the feelings of others in
what they say about children in general discussion.

Each child is a gift from God and should be cherished whether
it is your child or someone else’s.

All Year 7 & 9 students in Catholic schools in Western Australia
will complete this test during beginning Monday 30 July 2007,
Week 2 Term 3. Good Shepherd students will sit the test on
Tuesday 31 July 2007. Parents, please see the letter that
accompanies this newsletter. Any queries or concerns may be
directed to Ms Jonnine.

The next P & F Meeting will be held on Monday 11 June
2007 at 7:30pm in the Library. The meeting will include
a presentation on the school’s reporting format.
11 June 2007 Good Shepherd Catholic School, Lockridge

The teachers are currently preparing the childrens’ mid year
reports which are an interim report.

Under the new Australian Commonwealth Government for
reporting criteria as issued in 2006 the school issues an Annual
Report which is a summary of the child’s progress against the
Curriculum Framework Outcomes. The mid year report which
you will receive on Thursday 28 June 2007 is an interim report
and measures the child’s progress at the mid way point of the
year against end of year targets.

I would strongly encourage parents to read the documentation
that comes with the report to ensure a full understanding.

A traditional C does not equate to the new format as a barely
passing percentage mark and you may cause yourself and your
child unnecessary stress if you look at their report with an old
mindset.

Each family should adopt a practise to check their child’s hair
each Friday night, and treat as necessary over the weekend;
this would go a long way towards stopping the spread of head
lice in the School.
Each parent must take responsibility for his or her child’s hair.
If you would like more information regarding head lice please
see the Office.

The Year 6 and 7 students will be involved in a multi-sports day on Friday
22 June 2007. They will be competing against various schools in one of
the following sports: Soccer, Australian Rules Football, Basketball or
Netball.

The children will be travelling by bus to one of two locations depending
on their chosen sport.
Soccer – Maida Vale Reserve, Maida Vale (3 teams)
Football – Maida Vale Reserve, Maida Vale (1 team)
Basketball – Perry Lakes Stadium, Floreat (5 teams)
Netball – Maida Vale Reserve, Maida Vale (4 teams)

The children will be required to wear their blue sports uniform, bring
their recess, lunch and plenty to drink as they will be away from school
all day. It is also advisable to wear their tracksuit to stay warm and
bring a towel in case of wet weather.

Those children playing Soccer or Football are permitted to wear Soccer
or Football boots and if possible should wear a mouthguard to protect
their teeth.

Parent help is also needed on the day. At least one helper and one
umpire per team would be greatly appreciated. If you are available to
help on the day please contact Ms Croswell.

Pray together.
In my work, it saddens me to come across so many couples who
have never prayed together or who say they would feel
awkward praying with their spouse. Praying together, either
regularly or when faced with challenges, is a very powerful way
to strengthen a marriage.

Kindy: Well we have finally started news in Kindy and it is
going perfectly!!! We love our new friend Ted and can not wait
until we get our turn to take him home. Also our normal news,
which has been renamed ‘Entertain Me’, is also going
wonderfully. Thank you to all the parent helpers this week, we
love your involvement. It was a short week for the letter G but
we still managed to fit a lot in, we made Ginger Biscuits and
decorated our G’s with Green Glitter and finished our finger
paintings. Also we looked at the sense of hearing. This week it’s
time for the letter H, so be on the look out for things starting
with H. We will be investigating our taste and smell senses.

Pre Primary: This week in Literacy we will be looking at
the letter I. The students will be participating in rhyming
games and learning all about the planet Venus. In Mathematics
we will be learning about the number 16. The students will be
concentrating on identifying and writing numbers as well as
counting objects.
As you all know we began sending letter books home with the
students last week and would just like to remind parents to
continue to work with their child on these books as well as the
letter flash cards that were sent home earlier in the term.
Please don’t hesitate to come and see your child’s teacher if you
have any questions. Have a fantastic week!

Year 2: In Literacy for this week the children will be looking
at the beginning, middle and ending of a story. We will work on
a shared book with the whole class and complete activities to
reinforce this main focus. In Math we will be working with
graphs. The children will learn how to graph information and
also how to read a graph. In Religion we are going to compare
our family with Jesus’ family. How are they the same and how
are they different. We will discuss what families do together.
In Health we will discuss feelings and emotions. In Art we will
commence drawings of our favourite Australian animal. Hope
you have a lovely week! A reminder that P & F Raffle Books are
now over due. Please return them to the office immediately.

Year 3: This week the children are starting a new unit in
Mathematics on Space. They will be learning about 2D and 3D
shapes. Your child should be able to describe and discriminate
between different shapes. There will be a mass on Friday at
9am, celebrating the ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus’. Parents are
welcome to attend. Have a great week!
A reminder that P & F Raffle Books are now over due. Please
return them to the office immediately.

Year 4: Congratulations to the children who celebrated their
First Holy Communion on Sunday. It was a wonderful and
memorable occasion for all concerned. A big thank you to all
who were involved in some way on the day, especially Ms Clancy
and the choir, and others who helped out with various jobs.

return them to the office immediately.

Year 5: Last week in Math we were discussing the
importance of brackets around multiplication facts and the
need to work the bracket out first in order to achieve the
correct answer e.g. 3x4+3x6 = should read (3x4) + (3x6) =.We
have also been doing more story problems and discussing the
value of estimating the answer first. Students have been
reminded that calculators are needed for class work. In
literacy time the emphasis has been on understanding the
difference between fact and opinion in stories. In Art we are
making Fantasy Land pictures using a variety of media. Their
creations are looking interesting! In Science, we have written
up our observations on the experiments in growing our seedlings
in different conditions. Students are learning how to draw
conclusions on their findings. Could you please check your child’s
supply of the necessary stationery items, including highlighters,
for school and that all belongings have been named. Thank you.
A reminder that P & F Raffle Books are now over due. Please
return them to the office immediately.

Year 6: All the Year 6’s have finished their masks and it was
great to see the creativity and effort they put in to making
them look good. Just a reminder to all students to bring in your
permission slip for the winter sports carnival asap. If any
parents are able to help out on the day please fill in the reply
slip and return it to the class teacher.
The students will be beginning our new Math topic on Space.
They will be learning how to identify 3D and 2D shapes as well
as learning how to draw them.
In 6B and W the students will be given a new mini assignment on
smoking. The focus for this task is to teach the students how
to identify key information from given texts, to note take
11 June 2007 Good Shepherd Catholic School, Lockridge
these main points and to re-write them into their own words. It
has been noticed in their previous assignments the students
tend to copy information without changing it into their own
words, therefore, these strategies will be a focus in both class
and assignment time. Drafts will be completed during class time
and final copies need to be completed at home as part of their
homework. Have a great week!!
A reminder that P & F Raffle Books are now over due. Please
return them to the office immediately.

Year 7: Last week, Wednesday 6 June, Year 6 and 7 took
part in the Lifelink internet broadcast by the Archbishop; it
was very interesting to learn more about him, especially when
the Archbishop explained about his own Confirmation. This
week in class students are working on their narratives, it is
important that students consider the narrative structure and
demonstrate their proofreading skills. For homework this week
students need to complete their good copy for their Reading
assignment, once the draft is marked students are not to
change their work as it has already been assessed. Students
can hand write or type their final copy in line with the
assignment specifications. It is very pleasing to see the Year 7s
display good sportsmanship during sport time as they prepare
for their Winter Sports Day in week 9, permission slips for this
need to be returned as soon as possible please. Miss Leddin is
on after school duty during week 8.
A reminder that P & F Raffle Books are now over due. Please
return them to the office immediately.
