      INTRODUCTION
Goals and Scope of the Thesaurus

The Domestic Animal Thesaurus (DAT) is primarily intended for indexing and for improving the
retrieval of information about domestic animals. The terms defined in the DAT can be used to
index magazine articles, newspaper articles, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference
proceedings, books, audiovisuals, and other publications concerned with domestic animals. The
terms defined by the DAT will provide a common and consistent language which can be used
      both by indexers and searchers.

Terms included in the DAT are limited to those animals which have had their behavior, life
cycle, or physiology systemically altered as a result of being under human control for many
generations. Animals which are considered captive-bred or semi-domesticated are not included.
The focus of the DAT is concerned with domestic animals, which are categorized as either
household pets or farm animals. Household pets include animals such as dogs, cats, and pocket
pets (hamsters, rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, etc.). Farm animals include animals such as horses,
cows, sheep, and goats. It also includes terms for animals categorized as fowl (chickens, ducks,
turkeys, etc.). The DAT does not include terms for exotic pets such as birds or reptiles.

The allowable hierarchical relationships are genus/species, partitive, and instance relationships.
The thesaurus does not contain polyhierarchical relationships. The relationships vary throughout
the categories in trying to make each item as logically categorized as possible. For example, the
industries category contains partitive relationships for the types of industries; animal supplies is
an animal industry. It also contains genus/species relationships when listing the types of animal
supplies, such as collars and leashes. The intention is that each group of terms relate in a way
      that the user might expect.

      Intended Audience

The terms used by the DAT are those which are commonly known. It does not use specialized
vocabulary which is unique to a particular field of study and which one would expect an expert
to use. Thus, the intended audience is the layperson who wants to find general articles concerned
with domestic animals. This group may include students working on a school project, someone
thinking of acquiring a new pet, or anyone else that just wants to find general information about
      domestic animals.

      User Guidelines
The DAT is organized into five broad subject categories, which includes: animals, economics,
health, industries, and "organizations, events, and legislation". The DAT allows users to access
its terminology through alphabetical and hierarchical displays. The alphabetical display shows
each term with its immediate Broader Term (BT), Narrower Term (NT), or Related Term (RT).
A Related Term is a closely related concept the user might find useful. The hierarchical display

Design 1 – Thesaurus 2 Clark Gatto Vangundy
shows each term with all levels of the broader and narrower terms immediately visible. The
hierarchical relationships used in the DAT are most often of the genus/species format.

Scope notes appear throughout the alphabetical display to help define or clarify an unusual or
ambiguous term. The term “pocket pets”, for example, carries the following scope note: “Refers
to small animals, often rodents that are housed in cages.” Use notes help the user to identify the
preferred term from the thesaurus. For example, the term “diet” carries the note “USE nutrition”
to direct the user to the preferred term.

      DESIGN PROCESS
Transforming Candidate Terms into the Final List

The creation of the candidate terms was divided into two tasks, creating one list for pets and
another for farm animals. The pets list was worked with initially to create a hierarchy. Each of
the terms from the pets list was printed on a separate slip of paper. These terms were then sorted
into broad categories. From there, the terms from each category were arranged into hierarchies.
The use of the slips of paper was a big asset in this step. It allowed for easily "seeing" how the
hierarchies could work because it was a simple task to move terms around. This was much more
helpful then trying to "cut and paste" within a word processing program.

While working up the initial hierarchies, the handout from Week 2 about the four kinds of
hierarchical relationships allowed by NISO was referred to frequently. If the hierarchies did not
correctly fit a genus/species, partitive, or instance relationship the slips of paper were shuffled
around and re-thought through until they did. While doing this some synonyms were discovered
and a USE reference was established for the preferred term

Some hierarchies almost arranged themselves and others were difficult to figure out. At times,
the addition of a broader category term helped to make sense of the hierarchy. At other times,
nothing seemed to help. For example, the “finding pets” hierarchy really did not seem to fit any
      of the allowed NISO relationships.

After these hierarchies were created for the pet terms, the process was repeated to incorporate the
farm animal terms into the hierarchies. After we had a complete hierarchy of our terms we
discussed the hierarchies as a group on a conference call; we agreed on a few minor changes
such as adding the terms poultry and livestock under the broader term of farm animals. We
submitted our alphabetic list of terms and hierarchical list of terms to Professor Daniel for the
      first consultation.

Professor Daniel pointed out certain hierarchies that needed some work. One of the hierarchies
in question was shown to a person that is not a part of this project. This person took a quick look
at the hierarchy and suggested an alternative arrangement. Once the suggestion was made, it
seemed like the obvious solution. It was very helpful to have a fresh mind to look at the
      problem.

      Problems Encountered

We initially had the troublesome “finding pets” hierarchy under “animals”, but it did not fit any
of the allowed NISO hierarchical relationships. We ended up changing the “finding pets” term
to “selling pets” and moved it under the broader term of “economics”. We initially had a term
vegetarians that did not fit into any existing hierarchy. We have kept this term as its own
category, with no broader term or narrower terms below it. In the future this category may grow,
or the term may become a narrower term under a category that has yet to be created. It also

Design 1 – Thesaurus 27 Clark Gatto Vangundy
seemed like they were many terms that could fit into one or another hierarchy. Deciding where
to place these terms was challenging.

Revisions or Changes in Design Process

After our initial consultation with Professor Daniel, we followed her suggestion to break up the
broad category of “economics and industry” into two separate categories. She also pointed out
some terms that were redundant such as “health care”, “health problems”, and “health issues”.
After speaking together as a group again on a conference call we made some additional changes
to the hierarchy. We initially had the terms “health issues” and “health problems” under the
broader term of “health and care”. After discussing this, we decided to create the broader
category of “health” with narrower terms of “health care” and “health problems”. We also
removed veterinary industry from the industry category and moved veterinary medicine under
      the health category.

We also reworked the “pets” hierarchy. We initially had two narrower terms under pets,
“household pets” (which included cats and dogs) and “pocket pets” (which included hamsters
and mice). We decided that since pocket pets are also household pets that we did not need to
differentiate the two. We removed the term household pets and adjusted the pet's category
      accordingly.

Discussing the problem areas pointed out to us by Professor Daniel also led us to come up with a
few scope notes for our list. We initially had a term “human food (USE animal products)”, this
was created to differentiate between pet food and animal products that humans eat. We decided
to change this to simply “food” and create a scope note to direct users to the terms animal
      products and pet food.

      Potential Future Growth

There are several areas of the DAT that could easily grow depending on the collection. The
broad category “organizations, events, and legislation” could be broken up into three separate
categories. This would allow each of these topics to expand. The scope of the DAT could be
expanded to included exotic pets such as reptiles and birds which would add many additional
terms. Also, exotic livestock such as alpacas, llamas, etc. could be included.

More information about animal diseases could be incorporated. This would require the
expansion of the diseases category under health problems. The animal products category could
be greatly expanded. This could include not just food products, such as meat and dairy, but also
non-food products such as wool, mohair and leather. In addition, health care could be expanded
to include terms dealing with the affects of animal products on human health, such as concerns
about growth hormones or other health concerns such as mad cow disease.

The training animals hierarchy could be expanded as well to include terms related to training
guide and rescue dogs, as well as adding terms related to detection dogs (dogs trained to work to
find explosives or drugs) and their training. Adding other uses of animals could also expand

Design 1 – Thesaurus 28 Clark Gatto Vangundy
different areas, such as including sheepdogs and hunting dogs. The “animals” hierarchy could
also be expanded to include specific breeds of animals such as dog and cat breeds.

      Lessons Learned
Probably the most important lesson learned is that there is more than one way to create a
thesaurus. It is very important to get feedback from many people because everyone has a
different way of looking at things and interpreting them.

One group member cut her initial candidate terms into strips of paper, so that they would be
easier to work with while trying to figure out the hierarchies. She found this fun and very
helpful in seeing where terms fit together, and much easier to change things around.

One challenging aspect of the design was in trying to decide where to place terms. It seemed
that there was not one "right" answer. Some terms can fit under several different hierarchies and
deciding where to put them can be difficult. Discussing it as a group and considering the
alternatives was very helpful, and helped us to make decisions. Also, the designers can become
so close to the project that having another person, not involved with the project take a look at it
can be helpful. The fresh mind may see things the designers will miss.

      CONCLUSION
The Domestic Animal Thesaurus provides a valuable tool, which can be used either to index or
to retrieve articles about Domestic Animals. Its five broad categories provide a logical
arrangement and will be of service in allowing potential users to find terms fulfilling their
requirements. The alphabetical display, along with its extensive list of entry terms, is another
useful tool of the DAT to allow potential users to find terms. In the design of the thesaurus,
potential future growth was always considered. The five broad categories of the hierarchies
provide the necessary flexibility to allow the thesaurus to grow as its scope is expanded and
      future needs arise.
