					                           What is Hot Potatoes?
Hot Potatoes is a software suite containing six applications that are well-suited for use in
an educational setting. It is a simple way of creating attractive, web-based interactive
exercises with student feedback. The program generates all of the HTML pages
necessary from the form data you supply when you create the exercise.

The Hot Potatoes Suite enables you to create interactive Web-based teaching exercises
which can be delivered to any Internet-connected computer equipped with a browser. The
exercises use HTML and JavaScript to implement their interactivity, but you do NOT
need to know anything about these languages in order to use the programs. All you need
to do is enter the data for your exercises (questions, answers, responses etc.), and press a
button. The program will create the Web pages for you, and you can then upload them to
your folder on the server.

                              What Do You Get?
Multiple Choice - JBC creates multiple-choice quizzes. Each question can unlimited
answers, and any number of them can be correct. Specific feedback is given to the
student in response to each answer, and a percentage score is displayed after each correct
answer is chosen.

Short Answer - JQuiz creates short-answer quizzes, in which the student types in a
word or a sentence in response to a question. The sentences are checked against any
number of correct answers, and the feedback shows which parts of a student's answer are
correct. The student can ask for a hint if necessary, and see the next correct letter in the
answer.

Jumbled-Sentence - JMix creates jumbled-sentence exercises. You can specify up
to 21 different correct answers based on the words and punctuation in the base sentence,
and a hint button prompts the student with the next correct word in the sentence if needed.

Crossword - JCross creates crossword puzzles which can be completed online. You
can use a grid of up to 100 x100 letters. As in JQuiz and JCloze, a hint button allows the
student to request a free letter if help is needed.

Matching - JMatch creates matching or ordering exercises. A list of fixed items
appears on the left (these can be pictures or text), and next to each one there is a drop-
down list box containing a jumbled set of pieces of text. This can be used for matching
vocabulary to pictures or translations, or for ordering sentences to form a sequence or a
conversation.

Cloze - JCloze creates gap-fill exercises. Several correct answers can be specified
for each gap, and the student can ask for a hint and see a letter of the correct answer.
Automatic scoring is also included. The program allows gapping of selected words, or the
automatic gapping of every x word in a text.

                             What Does It Cost?
Hot Potatoes is FREE of charge for non-profit educational users who make their pages
available on the web. Other users must pay for a license. You must register your copy to
enable full functionality of some of the programs. To download the program, visit the
Half-Baked Software site at http://www.halfbakedsoftware.com/

                             What Do You Need?
To use the programs, you will need:

Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT 4.0 or above (A version of the suite is also available for
the Macintosh.)

A recent version of Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer

Access to a Web server (if you wish to deliver your exercises on the Internet)

If you know HTML and JavaScript, you will be able to exercise more control over the
final format and style of your exercise pages, but this is not a requirement for creating
useful interactive pages with Hot Potatoes.

To use the exercises, your students will also need an appropriate browser. They do NOT
need Hot Potatoes itself.

For All Quizzes:

There are three main steps in creating an exercise:

   1. Entering data (questions, answers and so on)
   2. Configuring the output (preparing the button captions, instructions, and other
      features of your Web pages)
   3. Creating Web pages (compiling your exercise into HTML or DHTML pages).

   • Pictures or links to files can be inserted by putting the cursor where the link is
needed and clicking Insert>Picture or Insert>Link>To File and opening the
appropriate file. The quiz must be saved before this will work.
   • Can insert links to URL's by clicking Insert>Link>To URL and filling in the URL
and the text which should appear on the page.
   • Save and print work through the File menu
   • To make the webpages out of the quizzes, first save your work. Then go to
File>Export to Web and save as an HTML file. This file and the accompanying
HTML files must all be in the same directory for the page to be viewed properly.
