							EWS Relative Pronouns Step-by-step How-to kit
Step 1: Join the sentences using relative pronouns.

Ex.1. Practice:
   1.      The woman was very scared. The woman was threatened by the evil
           children.
   2.      The park was in the middle of the city. The park was very popular.
   3.      The boys in the dormitory woke early in the morning. It was still dark and
           cold.

Step 2: Reduce the number of relative pronouns with one of the following methods:
    a) Change the extra information into adjectives and put these in front of the
        noun.
Ex. 2. Practice:
           1.     The man picked up the paper which had blood stains on it.
           2.     She told the children who were screaming to shut up.

    b) Change the extra information into adverbs and put these in front/ or behind
        the verb.
Ex. 3. Practice:
            1.    The man ran into the room. His running was anxious.
            2.    The vampire leered at the boy. The leer was hungry.
    c) Change relative + verb into –ing form
Ex. 4. Practice:
            1.    The dog, which ran into the room, stank of fish.
            2.    Her face broke into a smile, which exposed the bits of gold in her
                  teeth.
    d) Delete relative + auxiliary if verb is already in –ing form
Ex. 5. Practice:
            1.    The people in the room, who were singing enthusiastically, never
                  expected the piano to explode.
            2.    Jenny, who was sitting beside him, let out a shocked gasp.
    e) Delete relative + auxiliary if verb is passive.
Ex. 6. Practice:
            1.    The houses, which were built in the 1960’s, have become an eye-
                  sore.
            2.    Of the children who have been accused of the murder, little Harry
                  looks the most cunning.



Practice:
            1.     I was at school with the man. The man is driving that taxi. The taxi
               is painted blue.
            3.     The house is very old. The house stands on a hill. I was born in the
                   house.
            4.     The men put up a fright. The men were arrested by the police. The
                   men had been running away from the burning mall with electronic
                   equipment. The electronic equipment had been stolen.
5.    There is a hill behind our house. The hill is covered with sweet
      green grass. The cows enjoy the grass. The cows come from the
      local dairy.
6.    John walked in through the door. John was red in the face with
      anger. The door was standing slightly open. John shot the intruders.
      The intruders fell to the ground. The intruders were bleeding.
7.    The food was appreciated by everyone. Everyone had come to taste
      it. The food had been prepared by Janice. Janice was well known
      for her cooking skills.
8.    The four girls are seldom seen without a handful of boys. The four
      girls are well-known for their beauty. The boys follow them around
      like lost puppies.
9.    Some people are selfish. The people live in Hong Kong. The
      people drive cars. The cars cause pollution. The pollution increases
      respiratory diseases. The respiratory diseases effect many local
      children.
10.   Michael Jackson was once a cute black boy. Michael Jackson now
