Novinky na Thomson Scientific Welcome! Thomson Scientific is pleased to announce the development of the new, Webbased ISI Web of KnowledgeSM Usage Reporting System. Developed in response to feedback from our valued customers, this enhanced system provides interactive Web access to reporting at both the portal and individual resource levels. With the enhanced ISI Web of Knowledge Usage Reporting System, you will be able to:        Access, download and manage usage data at both the portal and individual resource levels — with a convenient ID and password View monthly usage data, which will have the capability to archive information from the most recent three years Use predefined formats that also display graphic representations of the data View data at various levels of detail, such as in summary tabular form or by IP address Download data in a variety of formats, including HTML, or export to a spreadsheet application Create customized reports that will allow for flexibility in your reporting needs Meet current and emerging standards for reporting usage data, such as ICOLC and COUNTER Term Definition Alert An alert automatically searches the latest week of a product and then sends the results to a user by e-mail. -46- Alert Creator Alerts Limit E-mail address of the person who set up the alert. The total number of search alerts that your institution has purchased. The number of search alerts in active use. This number should be less than or equal to the alerts limit. E-mail address of the recipient of the alert. The alerts limit minus the number of alerts used. Sum of all time spent in ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, divided by the number of portal sessions, for the time period. This includes time spent in products that can be accessed through ISI Web of Knowledge, as well as portal activities such as updating preferences. Average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers in one column in a usage report table. A citation event is an action that uses the citation data in Web of Science. A citation event is recorded when a user clicks one of the following buttons or links:      Alerts Used Alert Recipient Alerts Remaining Average Length Average Use Citation Event Search on the Cited Reference Selection page Lookup on the Cited Reference Lookup page Related Records on the Full Record page Times Cited on the Full Record page Cited References on the Full Record page In Web of Science, certain citation events count twice, once as a citation event and once as a query. For example, a cited reference search in Web of Science counts as a citation event and as a query. -47Current Web Contents Current Web Contents is a database of Web sites that have been selected by editors at Thomson Scientific for their relevance to a Current Contents discipline and for the editorial quality of their content. CWC records are full records in the database of Web sites. eSearch submits a search performed in Current eSearch Contents Connect to the Web. The results of an eSearch are full text pages from Web sites. Full Record A full record shows all of the available data for an indexed item in a database. Inter-Product Link An inter-product link takes the user from one ISI Web of Knowledge database to another. An inter-product link is recorded when a user clicks any of the following:      Go to [product] button Citing Articles button Cited References button Related Records button A cited reference link to a full record in another product IP Address A 32-bit number that identifies a computer that can send and receive messages over the Internet. Maximum Actual Users The highest number of users who are logged on at any point during a 24-hour period. Note: you may find occasions when the number of maximum actual users exceeds the number of maximum contractual users. This anomaly can occur if, during a period of high use, a server goes into redirect and an overlap session is created on the -48second server. Maximum Contractual The maximum number of simultaneous logons permitted by the terms of a subscription. This number should be Users constant from day to day for the duration of a subscription agreement, unless the agreement is modified to increase or decrease the number of simultaneous logons. A request that returns results from a database. A query is always recorded when a user clicks the Search button in a product. A query is also recorded when a set is created by an alert. Other queries are recorded by specific user actions in individual products. Note: Queries are renamed Searches in COUNTER reports. Query Records Emailed Number of records e-mailed when a user clicks the E-mail button. Number of records exported to EndNote®, ProCite®, or Reference Manager® when the user clicks the Export to Reference Software button. This month’s upgrade will provide a more robust, flexible, and user-friendly environment for understanding and analyzing usage data. New enhancements make usage reports even more helpful The upgrade to the reporting system will add the following features:      All-product and multi-product summary reports, enabling comparisons through and across products and time frames Hyperlinks to data definitions — improving ease of use New output options for COUNTER-formatted reports XML output option that conforms to the COUNTER DTD Administrators will be able to manage and update contact information These new features, along with the system’s key features, allow library managers to further customize the way they track usage at their institution:         Customers can access their reports anytime with ID and password, from the integrated, Web-based system The data are updated monthly, with daily or monthly displays, and an archive of up to three years COUNTER-compliant usage reports Advanced usage tracking of additional metrics including records viewed, citation events, records printed, and other unique features of Thomson Scientific products Graphic displays enable administrators to easily spot trends Reports for consortia Multiple download options including Microsoft Excel and HTML Linking reports track inter-product usage (from product to product within ISI Web of Knowledge), and outbound links from records in ISI Web of Knowledge to publishers’ full text. Users can access two kinds of usage reports for full-text publisher links; the all- -54-  publisher snapshot view, and the individual publisher view, which displays all of the journals by publisher Search, Citation, and Table-of-Contents alerting reports. Usage and linking reports provide critical data Librarians can use usage and linking reports to:       Keep track of how resources are being used—how often are users accessing the resources and when do they use them? Analysis of when sessions occur indicates times of peak usage at the institution. Get the most out of available resources—where are users coming from? Analysis by IP address enables understanding of how local communities or departments access the products. Identify training needs—are users taking full advantage of product features? Analysis of activity reports help administrators identify which aspects of each product are most heavily used and which features may be under-utilized. Take full advantage of complementary products available on ISI Web of Knowledge—inter-product links reports demonstrate how users move between database products and analytical tools. Understand use of journals by the users—publisher full-text links reports indicate how often users link from ISI Web of Knowledge to a journal title. Ensure users are making the most of ISI Web of Knowledge alerting capabilities—summary reports for Search, Citation and Table-of-Contents alerts help administrators manage these services. The key to understanding and promoting usage Thomson Scientific has created a usage reporting system which delivers customized, targeted reports for each ISI Web of Knowledge subscriber - enabling librarians to easily pinpoint which resources are being used most and how they are being used. Much more than just a count of searches, the ISI Web of Knowledge Usage Reporting System is a valuable tool that helps librarians understand their users, and helps them get the most out of ISI Web of Knowledge.
