User Guide for the Charles E. Young Research Library
Research Commons Demonstration Space
As part of the renovation of the Research Library’s first floor and lower level, a new research commons will provide
flexible, technology-enabled spaces for students and faculty to do research. It will feature a variety of technologies and
resources to enable researchers to interact with UCLA Library resources as well as collaborate with one another.

Spaces and Equipment
To guide decisions on the design and capabilities of the research commons, a demonstration space has opened in part of the
reference area on the first floor. This work-in-progress provides the opportunity to test services, equipment,
furnishings, and program concepts in a real, working environment.
    Components:
E-lounge: designed to support collaborative research and learning, with comfortable seating around a large plasma screen
(Panasonic fifty-eight-inch with VGA/DVI input), which can be controlled from a laptop; see below for laptop loans
Showcase station: another option for collaborative research and learning, designed to showcase "hidden" collections and
data resources, researchers' work in progress, and available resources. Equipment: Mac Pro Dual 2.8GHz; twenty-seven-inch
monitor; Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF with built-in microphone. Printing available only to CLICC printers; visit <http://my.clicc.ucla.edu>
to confirm an existing CLICC print account.
Individual workstations: created in response to needs expressed by faculty and graduate students, offering space and
equipment for intensive research. Equipment at workstations 1 and 2: Dell Optiplex 755 Minitower; dual monitor setup with nineteen-
inch flat panel with adjustable stand, VGI/DVI; Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF with built-in microphone; printing available to both
CLICC printers and public printers in the Research Library lobby. Equipment at workstation 3: Mac Pro Dual 2.8GHz; twenty-inch cinema
display; Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF with built-in microphone. Printing available only to CLICC printers; visit <http://my.clicc.ucla.edu>
to confirm an existing CLICC print account.
CD-ROM stations: provide access to some of the Research Library's frequently used CD-based databases
Laptops, tablet PC, and projector: two dual-boot Macbook laptops and a presentation kit with projector, speaker, and cables
can be checked out by UCLA faculty and students and used in the demonstration area or elsewhere on campus.

same day or in advance, and there is no time limit on each reservation. A UCLA Logon is required to log in to the
workstations, and a valid UCLA BruinCard must be presented to check out equipment.
        To view the reservation schedule:
        1. Go to <http://irma.clicc.ucla.edu/mrm7>, enter irma as the username and irma123 as the password.
        2. In the “Available Locations” section of the left-hand column, click on the “Research Library” heading, then on
           “Research Commons.”
        3. Click on the date in the calendar at the top of the left-hand column to view the schedule for that day; the schedule will
appear in the task pane, with columns for each workstation and piece of equipment.
        To make a reservation:
        1. To reserve any of workstations or equipment, go to the Research Library reference desk or the CLICC laptop lending
           desk.
        2. To reserve by phone, call 310.825.7557.
