How do I deal with harassment, bullying and discrimination? If you think you have been, or are being harassed, bullied or discriminated against, you should get help as soon as possible. • You can ask for advice from a counsellor, your tutor, or any member of staff. • You can leave a message on the college’s confidential answer phone Tel 598736 • You can talk to Jayne Kinley our Student Services Manager Tel 598738 Your matter will be investigated and you will receive support. If after five days you find that things have not improved then you can contact David Daulby our Director of Customer Services Tel 598723 who will investigate the issue further, take appropriate action and ensure that you continue to be supported. If your difficulties persist then please contact : Gary Warke, Deputy Principal Tel 598814 or Elaine McMahon, Principal Tel 598702 Ensure that you are familiar with our policies and procedures for combating such behaviour. You can obtain a copy of our Equal Opportunities, Diversity and Race Equality Policies, Harassment Policy and Disability Statement from Student Services and the College Intranet. If you are a member of staff and you feel that you have been discriminated against by the College you should follow the grievance procedure outlined in the Staff Handbook. If you are a student and you feel that you have been discriminated against by the College you should follow our complaints procedure. You can obtain complaints/praise cards from any centre at the main reception areas. Please ask your tutor about this if you are unsure. What actions might be taken against people who harass / racially harass, discriminate or bully? Any form of harassment is totally unacceptable at Hull and Goole College. Harassment, discrimination and bullying are very serious offences and we will take action to address them. Any accusation of harassment, discrimination or bullying will be subject to an investigation which may lead onto disciplinary action. Any member of the college community who is clearly identified as being responsible for such behaviour may be asked to leave the College. A full copy of our policy relating to harassment is in Section 18 of the Staff Handbook and is available from Personnel Services, Curriculum Support Offices and the College Intranet. Harassment and bullying is any inappropriate behaviour which leads to a person to feel less able to continue with their studies or work, or which affects the dignity of any person or group of people. Harassment may happen often or be a single incident. It can take many forms such as unnecessary physical contact or creating an unpleasant or intimidating environment at the College. The College has a set of procedures that may be used to resolve any potential difficulty involving discrimination. • Physical – contact such as touching, patting or assault; gestures, intimidating or aggressive behaviour. • Verbal – unwelcome remarks; suggestions and propositions; malicious gossip; insults, jokes and banter; racist comment and jokes. literature, pictures, graffiti and computer images; tone of formal or informal communication; isolation or non co-operation and being excluded from social and work activities. • Non-Verbal – offensive literature, racist Such behaviour / comments may refer specifically to an individual’s ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation and gender. Discrimination is treating an individual differently or unfairly because of their sex, marital status, sexual preference, colour, ethnic origin, religion, age, disability or trade union membership.
