Strategic Framework 2007-2010 Our Vision for Young People All young people are respected and able to influence and inform decisions which affect their lives or upon which they have strong opinions. Our Mission As the National Youth Council of the UK, through our member organisations and network; BYC supports young people aged 26 and under, to participate in decisions which affect them and to have a voice on issues they believe in. Our Values Participation: All young people have the right to participate in the decisions which affect their lives and issues which they believe in locally, nationally and internationally. Equality: We promote equality among young people; all young people in our member organisations are valued equally. Diversity: Young people are diverse with different needs and opinions and this is to be recognised and celebrated. Recognition: Young people are recognised for the positive contributions they make to society, their place as citizens now and in the future. The Young People We Work For BYC supports all young people 26 and under who want to make a difference. Young people who would like to get involved with BYC can become involved in one of our member organisations or join our network. Our Strategic Objectives To help young people and our member organisations to campaign for change, on issues that are important to them. To do this we will: o assist member organisations and young people to share information and ideas with other young people in the UK and internationally o support young people and member organisations to respond quickly and effectively to issues which are important to them o provide young people with a platform from which to communicate and influence decision makers o feedback to member organisations and young people on our interactions with decision makers and the results of those interactions o engage in proactive evidence based campaigns. To support our member organisations to develop young people’s skills through training and programmes so they can confidently participate in: o developing their own activities and organisations with support through; o adult led organisations and decision making structures; o community life, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. To continue to develop BYC as a diverse membership organisation led by young people for young people by: o Recognising and respecting difference and taking steps to involve young people from diverse backgrounds through targeted programmes and campaigns; o Developing peer-led outreach work locally and regionally; o Developing our ability to communicate with young people using new media and technology; o Providing volunteering opportunities for young people to become involved in shaping and delivering the work of BYC and to gain valuable experience and accreditation to take with them. To provide resources and opportunities to members to help young people get involved and affect change within their local, national and international communities. We do this through: o work with young people to develop programmes and activities locally, nationally and internationally; o support for young people to participate at regional, national and international platforms; o providing opportunities to access key decision makers in government; o matching member organisations to work collaboratively and share information. To continue to work in partnership with other organisations and actively seek new partnerships with organisations who share in BYC’s vision for young people we will: o Promote the voices of young people through our campaigns, programmes and communications; o Respond collectively to decision makers with our member organisations and partners; recognising the more voices together make a bigger impact; o Understand the barriers to participation through research and working closely with young people to make participation easy and accessible; o Continue to work with the Government and other Volunteering organisations to influence policy regarding youth volunteering ensuring young volunteers are recognised and celebrated and the opportunities available to them are safe, fun and rewarding. To diversify our funding into a growing investment and achieve sustainable and consistent growth. We will: o invest in our fundraising development by bringing in specialist fundraising expertise. o develop our existing and partnerships and collaborations. o increase our income generated through training, consultancy and publications.
