 Policy Guidelines and Procedures

   The Child Protection Co-ordinator for Isobel Mair School is:


              Mari Wallace, Head Teacher

If you have any concerns about the care and welfare of any of
our pupils you MUST report it IMMEDIATELY to the Head
Teacher.

In the event of the Head Teacher not being immediately available
the matter should be reported to the DHT or in his absence to
one of the Principal Teachers.

    Good Practice Guidelines for Staff



       respect all children and young people


       provide a role model for others


       try to ensure that where ever possible more than one member of staff is present
        during an activity - otherwise that the member of staff is sight or hearing of others


       at all times staff should respect the child or young person's right to personal privacy and
        dignity


      be alert that another person could misinterpret your actions no matter how well intentioned


      be aware that even caring physical contact with a child or young person may be
        misinterpreted


       at all times staff should be cautious if discussing sensitive issues with children or
        young people


       at all times staff should operate within Policy and Procedures
        of Isobel Mair School and East Renfrewshire Education Department Child Protection
        Guidelines.


       staff should encourage adults and children and young people to feel
      comfortable in pointing out attitudes or behaviour they do not like

       staff should remember that all physical and verbal contact with children or young people
        should be appropriate


       staff should withdraw from any inappropriate attention seeking behaviour .


       staff should be alert to the fact that all remarks and gestures made in front of children or young p
        should be appropriate at all times


       staff should be cautious of jumping to conclusions about others without verification of the facts


       staff should be aware that child abuse issues should not be trivialised or
        exaggerated


       staff should treat all children and young people equably




REMEMBER:-

        You cannot rely on your "good name" or that of the school to protect you


       Do not believe that "it could never happen to you"


       Never take a chance when common sense, policy and practice suggest more
        prudent approach


       To carry out all learning and teaching activities and all personal care
        affording the children or young people in your care dignity, a right to privacy
        and at all times operating within the Child Protection Guidelines of Isobel Mair
        School and ERC as a whole.

Summary of Procedures to Follow in the Case of a Child Protection Issue



If a child or young person discloses to you abuse by someone else:

    *        allow the child or young person to speak without interruption accept
             what they say DO NOT investigate

    *        alleviate feelings of guilt or isolation PASS NO JUDGEMENT

    *        ensure that the child or young person is aware that you are glad that
             they have shared this information with you

            tell the child or young person that -YOU MUST PASS ON THE INFORMATION



If you suspect a child or young person is being abused, emotionally, physically or
sexually

*           REPORT THE MATTER TO A MEMBEROF THE SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM
            IMMEDIATELY ie Head Teacher or Depute Headteacher if HT is unavailable



If you receive an allegation about any adult or about yourself

*           REPORT THE MATTER TO A MEMBER OF THE SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM
            IMMEDIATELY ie Head Teacher or Depute Headteacher if HT is unavailable

*            ensure that no-one is placed in a position which could cause further
            compromise



IN ALL CASES

*           RECORD THE FACTS AND REPORT TO SMT

*           YOU MUST REFER. YOU MUST NOT INVESTIGATE
