                    Atoms, Ions and Isotopes
The purpose of this activity is to examine the structure of
the atom, perhaps reviewing material which you have already
covered in another course. For each diagram, indicate the
positions of the sub atomic particles by using the
 following colors:
      Protons  red
      Neutrons  blue
      Electrons  green

Draw the electronic structure of carbon – 12.

                                           How many protons are present?

          Nucleus Where are they?

                                           How many neutrons?

                                           Where are they?

                                           How many electrons?
                                     n=2
                            n=1
                                           Where are they?

Draw the electronic structure of chlorine – 35.

                                                 How many protons are present?

                                                 How many neutrons?
Nucleus
                                                 How many electrons?

How is the structure of chlorine
                                                 different from that of carbon?
                                             OCHSA Chem – Unit 11[2]

Draw the electronic structure of sulfur – 32 ion. Remember
 sulfur’s oxidation number?

                                              How many protons are present?

Nucleus How many neutrons?

                                              How many electrons?

Why does the ion have a
                                              negative charge?

What is the definition of an ion?

Draw the electronic structure of the chlorine – 37 atom.

                                              How many protons are present?

Nucleus How many neutrons?

                                              How many electrons?

                                              What is the difference between
this and the chlorine – 35 atom?

                                              How are these two atoms
                                              similar?

                                              Define an isotope.
