Fall 2005 Newsletter DoveLewis Breaks Ground on New Main Hospital A dream has finally come true. After several years of planning, designing and negotiating, construction has begun on the new DoveLewis main hospital in NW Portland. Thursday, August 25th, the community celebrated on the plot of land where our new home will be. Portland Mayor Tom Potter and City Commissioners Sam Adams and Dan Saltzman gave us the city’s endorsement. DJ Tara from 94/7 fm announced our new fundraising partnership (for more details, see page 04) and Ann Schatz energized the crowd about the project. But the highlight of the night was appropriately the animals—six dogs put on custom made construction vests (thank you Raspberry Field!) and ceremoniously “broke ground” right alongside DoveLewis Executive Director, Ron Morgan and our Board President Scott Loepp, DVM. How can you help? • Make a donation to the building project Match your donation through your employer’s match program Hang posters advertising our events Host a fundraiser or informational dinner about DoveLewis for your friends and family Use one of our promotional packets to give a presentation to your friends or coworkers Talk about the project to your friends Bring your friends for a tour of our current hospital Throw a party at your house to raise awareness and money for the project Encourage your friends, co–workers, family to get involved—this building will serve the community, we rely on YOU to help build it For more information contact Jeannie Ortega: 503.535.3391 x26 jortega@dovelewis.org • • • • • • We Still Need Help! • So, if we’ve broken ground already, we must have all of the money we need, right? Wrong. We’ve freed up enough money to begin construction, but we still need to raise millions of dollars to cover the cost. Donations, not medical fees, will pay for the new DoveLewis. We need a total of $7M. So far, we’ve raised just over $1M. We’re moving fast because the need for a new space is critical. Our patients and staff are cramped in a space that threatens the quality of care—that’s unacceptable. We had record breaking patient numbers in May and July. We just couldn’t put this project off any longer. The animal community needs DoveLewis to be the best it can be; our current facility won’t allow that. • Inside DoveWear! Myth Busters! We have undergone an image overhaul! Thanks to Sandstrom Design, we now have a consistent look which will help the community recognize and identify us in all of the programs and services we offer. Sandstrom generously donated all of the design elements for the new brand, which includes a color–coding system for all of our programs and a designer’s toolbox full of interchangeable animal images. All of the sketches you see here are hand–drawn and inspired by photos of actual DoveLewis patients and employee pets. You’ll also notice that our long name has been shortened into one word! We will now be known as DoveLewis. Sandstrom has clients like ESPN, Adidas, Tazo Tea, Miller Brewing, Nike, Levi’s, Moonstruck Chocolate and Burgerville. We are very lucky to have them in our corner! Special thanks to Rick Braithwaite, one of the leaders of the pack at Sandstrom, and also a member of the DoveLewis board of directors. We’d also like to thank three other cool guys who worked a lot on this project: Jim Morris, Marc Cozza & Brad Engle. 08 10 11 12 DoveWear Finally, DoveLewis presents: DoveWear! It’s a fashion sensation that’s sweeping the nation. We have brand new t–shirts and hats for sale at all of our events. You may choose from ladies or unisex tees, in black or white with your choice of a cat or dog on the front. We also have khaki UniFit baseball caps with either an embroidered dog or cat on the front. Now you can proudly show that you have the love of Dove! Shirts and hats are $20 each. Come to our events to order or contact Kristi Ketchum at 503.535.3391 x34 or send an email to kketchum@dovelewis.org. 02 www.dovelewis.org New Specialists, Reduced Wait Times Top Dove’s “To–Do” List While our work on building a new main hospital in NW Portland is generating a lot of attention and most of the headlines regarding DoveLewis these days, we are also putting a lot of energy into other improvements that will expand our reach and the quality of our care. While our new home will be much larger, we know that it is our medical expertise, experienced staff, and client service that will allow us to meet you and your pets needs in time of crisis. One of my primary responsibilities is to make sure that Dove does its best not only for the clients of today, but also the clients of tomorrow. Earning and keeping your trust is at the core of our success. Our veterinary medical staff includes the most experienced ICU and emergency doctors around. Our staff doctors have a combined 118 years of veterinary experience! This experience is led by Oregon’s only two practicing Critical Care Specialists: Dr. Andrea Oncken, our Medical Director and one of our surgeons, and Dr. Alicia Faggella, our Critical Care Director. Behind the scenes, however, we have identified a limited number of key staff additions that will improve the quality of care for our patients, and peace of mind for their families. This month, two new specialists join our staff. For the first time in our history, we have a radiologist and an internal medicine specialist on the team. Previously, we have used external radiologists and internists to complement our needs in these areas. Dr. Alan Lipman is our new radiologist and Dr. Sarah Naidoo joins us as our internist. Like most of our staff, Dr. Lipman and Dr. Naidoo come from far away to work at DoveLewis and join our community. Dr. Lipman joins us from North Carolina State where he recently completed a three–year residency in radiology. Dr. Naidoo comes from half–way around the world, having spent the past three years practicing and teaching in Australia and New Zealand. She is originally from Canada. These are wonderful additions to our staff and our patient care services. More work behind the scenes is being done by a small group of doctors, technicians, receptionists and our hospital leadership team. This group is meeting weekly for three months to evaluate our hospital operations, policies and procedures in order to make recommendations for improvements. Every aspect of how we run our hospitals, from evaluating patients, communicating with clients, and hiring new staff is under the microscope. This group’s recommendations will help build a better DoveLewis from the inside out. One of our main goals is to greatly reduce wait times for clients who need us for non–life threatening emergency “outpatient” care on evenings and weekends. Another main objective of this project is to prepare us for life in our new hospital next year. The hospital will be more than twice as big as our existing NW Portland location. Due to the design of the hospital we will have to work much differently and I believe our clients will be happy with the changes. Our outpatient emergency services and our ICU services will run independently, freeing up staff to concentrate on either the ER or the ICU, but not both. As we head toward winter, take comfort in knowing that we are not going to hibernate or rest on our successes. We are working harder than ever to create an even better organization for the animals, for our clients, and this community. You deserve nothing less. At the big DoveLewis groundbreaking celebration, 94/7 fm officially launched its partnership with DoveLewis. DJ Tara was there to help kick off our new relationship. We think the 94/7 Nation listeners are the best. When the station asked them which charity was their favorite, they replied with a resounding, “DoveLewis!” That’s why we’re committed to plan and promote several fun events together every year, which will all benefit DoveLewis. Check both of our websites (www.dovelewis. org and www.947.fm) and listen to 94/7 fm for details about upcoming events. Thank you 94/7 Nation listeners! Shop for DoveLewis! We do NOT need any towels or bedding at this time A DoveLewis patient rests in comfort, thanks to Ruff Wear. Employee Needs • Special Thanks Ruff Wear Our patients at DoveLewis are resting a little easier these days—thanks to a Bend, Oregon company called Ruff Wear. Ten years ago, the company was started in a garage with one product: a collapsible water bowl. From there, it grew to a full line of innovative items for dogs and their people. In August, the company donated several beds in different sizes for our patients. Megan Brashear, one of our lead technicians, shares this story about the day the first shipment arrived: “We unpacked our shipment (it was like Christmas around here!) and we knew right where to put that first HUGE bed, under a Great Dane recovering from surgery not 3 hours before. It took three people to stand him up long enough to get the squishy bed underneath him, but once he laid down he let out a sigh of relief and went into a deep snooze. He hadn’t looked that comfortable since coming in. We will put these beds to good use and are so excited to make our patients happy! THANK YOU Ruff Wear!” Learn more about Ruff Wear online at www.ruffwear.com or at 888.783.3932. Mt. Hood Cleaners If you’ve ever seen the laundry room at DoveLewis you know that two residential washers and one industrial dryer are just not enough to handle all of the towels and blankets we go through. Piles were spilling out of the tiny room, volunteers had to pick up garbage bags full of laundry and wash it at local laundromats and our hospital staff was spending a lot of time doing laundry! Now, thanks to Mt. Hood Cleaners in Sandy, Oregon, our staff and volunteers are relieved! They’ve offered to pick up, clean and drop off our laundry twice a week for free! Thank you, Mt. Below are some widely held beliefs that can lead to harmful and even fatal consequences for your furry family members; and we feel it is important to set the record straight. Busted! Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen are great pain relievers for people, but can be deadly if given to pets. Vomiting, stomach ulcers, liver and kidney failure, and even death can occur if you give these medications—even in very small amounts—to your cats and dogs. If you believe your animal is in pain, contact your veterinarian or DoveLewis immediately. A physical exam at the veterinary office can often tell a veterinarian the source of the problem and then appropriate pain medication can be prescribed. Myth: My cat or dog will get fat and lazy if I spay or neuter it. Besides, pets will be healthier if I spay them when they are older and have had a litter. Busted! Companion animals do not become overweight just because they are spayed or neutered. They will, however, become overweight if they are not fed nutritious food in proper amounts with a good dose of daily exercise. If you feel your pet is overweight, consult with your veterinarian about specific diets or weight loss programs they recommend. Spaying or neutering animals before they get older helps to prevent life–threatening infections and cancers. A uterine infection called pyometra is a major cause of illness in older unspayed cats and dogs. Spaying and neutering cats and dogs eliminates the chance they will contract uterine or testicular cancer and markedly decreases their chances of developing malignant breast and prostatic cancers. Myth: Toys sold for pets at the pet store have to be safe for any size or age of dog or cat, or they wouldn’t be sold there. Busted! Toys are often marketed for different ages and weights of dog and developed especially for a breed or type of animal. A small stuffed animal may be appropriate for a toy poodle but is likely to end up needing to be surgically removed from a Rottweiler’s intestine if they are allowed to play with it. Just like you would do for your human children, do your homework in the pet toy department: read labels, ask the staff at the pet store, and most importantly—ask your veterinarian. Many large breed dogs can chew all but industrial tire rubber or the like to bits and need a lot of supervision in the play department. These are but a few of the commonly held misconceptions about cats and dogs. If there is a “fact,” urban legend, or widely held belief you would like to be validated or debunked, please have talk with your regular veterinarian or give DoveLewis a buzz. There is nothing worse than having a myth perpetuated—especially when it comes to matters of your pet’s health. Myth: The same over the counter medications my human family takes for pain can be given to my dogs or cats, as long as I give them a smaller dosage. 06 www.dovelewis.org Run For the Love of Dove October 2, 2005 Registration: 10:00AM Run/Walk: 11:00AM $25 in advance includes T–shirt and lunch Go to www.dovelewis.org to register in advance. But this summer our blood products were in serious demand. In July, our doctors gave more blood transfusions than in any other month in the history of the blood bank, which dates back to 1987. In fact, we gave 77 transfusions in 17 days in July. That’s more transfusions than we typically give in one month! Luckily, our fabulously committed donors answered the call for extra blood draws. And thanks to a little publicity, we were able to start the donation process rolling with lots of new potential donors. That’s great news because even though the busy summer is behind us, the need for blood products is growing. “As we continue to practice advanced emergency and ICU veterinary medicine at DoveLewis, we’re able to save the lives of more and more critically ill patients. Their survival depends upon the availability of blood products from our blood bank. Without it, the patients would die,” says Alicia Zambelli, senior staff doctor and blood bank director. year 2003 Year year 2004 year 2005 Amount of Transfusions in July 0 50 100 150 Number of Transfusions Transfusions Over the Last Year July June May April March Months Feb Jan Dec Nov Oct Can Your Dog Donate Blood? Nearly a dozen “superhero” cats are now visiting DoveLewis on a regular basis to donate blood. But we have three more who need indoor–only homes of their own. Frankie Batman Pippen Crime Fighting Canines Become Blood Donors at DoveLewis Thanks to two dedicated groups of exceptional human–canine teams, DoveLewis has some new blood donors. Search One K–9 Detection, an organization founded in 1988 to provide quality K–9, wilderness and urban search and rescue teams to Oregon and SW Washington, came to DoveLewis in May to begin the donation process. In August, the Washington County Sheriff’s Search One K–9 Detection dogs, Thursday, May 26th Office K–9 unit answered our call for new From L to R: Bodan, Sig, Madison, Chase and D’Artagnan blood donors when our amount of available blood reached critical levels. www.dovelewis.org 09 DoveLewis Pet Loss Support Program Expands The idea to form the DoveLewis Pet Loss Support Group began in 1985 when Enid Traisman was a graduate student at Portland State University’s Masters in Social Work program. Enid was and is still deeply touched by peoples’ ability to locate the inner strength it takes to heal from loss. In order for people to work through their pain they must feel support and validation for what they have lost. Society is not too good at this in general and is even more remiss in terms of understanding the human/animal companion bond. As a result, all too often, people who are grief stricken after the death of their pet not only feel unsupported, they keep their feelings locked up inside, feel isolated and confused, and may not complete the grieving process! This pattern leaves these folks emotionally scarred. We at DoveLewis understand, support and validate all aspects of the human/animal bond. That is why we are adding a fifth free Pet Loss Support Group each month. We provide the caring message to all pet owners who are anticipating the death or have already suffered the loss of their companion animal that we at DoveLewis care and understand the depth of their bond to their animal, and that we want to support them through their grief so that they can heal and enjoy the gifts and memories their animals left them. New Sympathy Cards We’ve recently redesigned our sympathy cards at DoveLewis! You may still order them online at www.dovelewis.org. We will handwrite a message of your choice inside and mail it to your chosen recipient. The cost is just $5. The inner left panel says “Beloved friends never leave us—they just run ahead to wait for us in a happier place. May beautiful memories be your strength in these difficult times.” The back lists the days, times and locations of our free Pet Loss Support Group meetings. We do this by offering: • • • • Informative Pet Loss Brochures A 24–hour pet loss support message line where each person is personally called back within a day To reach the message line, call: 503.234.2061 Five free support group meetings each month A Pet Remembrance Journal as a healing aid DoveLewis Read to the Dogs Program Gets $2,500 Gift Special thanks to a generous donor who gave $2,500 to the Library Foundation to be used for the Read to the Dogs program. The innovative program pairs young readers with dog and handler teams trained by DoveLewis in libraries and schools in the Portland–Metro area. Read to the Dogs helps children develop literacy skills by offering them a relaxed, non–judgmental environment in which to practice reading aloud. Read to the Dogs began as a partnership with DoveLewis and the Multnomah County Library. The Library Foundation was established in 1995 and has since raised more than $20 million in private funds for enhancing library programs, library book collections and buildings. This one–time gift will be spent primarily on marketing and promotional materials such as T–shirts for the volunteer humans, bandanas for the volunteer dogs, bookmarks, posters and picture–making equipment so kids can take home a framed photo of themselves and their reading partners. Offer to be with them: “If it’s OK, I’ll stay with you for awhile” “I’ll be happy to go with you when you take him to the vet” or “I’d be happy to come over.” Offer to talk by phone: “I’m here if you want to talk” or “When I call you, it’s OK to say you don’t feel like talking.” Offer to listen: Ask gentle, open ended questions and then listen. “Would you like to talk about what happened?” “Tell me what happened?” or “What’s the hardest part for you?” DLAATE Team Spotlight Valerie Warren and Whittney Whittney, my Boston terrier, and I visit an assisted living facility every other week. We meet residents in the common library area, so who we see can really vary from week to week. Sometimes there will only be a few people who would like to pet Whittney; sometimes there are many. There are also some “regulars” who seem to make a special effort to be in the library at the time of our visit. I must admit that I was disappointed when Cynthia—a 99–year–old woman who loves animals and is one of the “regulars”—was out at another appointment during our last visit. It was a very quiet day and the library was almost empty. I was beginning to think Whittney and I should leave early when a man we had never met before was wheeled up by one of the assistants. He had just received a haircut and was returning to his room. He was in a wheelchair and was blind. Angel, the facility program director, asked him if he would like a visit from Whittney. He accepted with enthusiasm! I was able to put Whittney on his lap and she sat calmly while he petted her with his shaky hands and gave her hugs. He told me about the Chihuahuas his parents used to raise and about the neighbor’s Doberman Pincers who were fierce to everyone else but who loved him. He sat with Whittney until it was time for us to leave. I was so grateful that Whittney and I had the opportunity to make such a special connection. Write a note or letter. Stay in touch over time. Hold them in our heart. Sometimes a warm touch to the hand or shoulder can send a strong message of support. Let the griever know it’s OK to cry with you. Listen a lot, talk a little. Learn to be comfortable with silence. Be willing to hear their story over and over. Invite the griever to tell you stories about their animal who has died. This may be stories of the illness and death, or memories of their life. You can invite them to share by asking; “What is it you loved the most about Spot,” or “What was Fluffy like when he was little?” Share your own memories and stories of their animal. It helps the griever to remember that others know and loved their animal too. As time goes by, don’t pretend that a serious loss did not occur by never mentioning it. www.dovelewis.org 011 NONPROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID PORTLAND, OR PERMIT NO. 1111 DoveLewis Executive Director Ron Morgan Medical Director Andrea Oncken, DVM, DACVECC Critical Care Director Alicia Faggella, DVM, DACVECC Blood Bank Director Alicia Zambelli, DVM Blood Bank Coordinator Carole Bedford, CVT Animal Assisted Therapy & Education Program Director Heather Toland, MAEE, CVT Pet Loss Support Program Director Enid Traisman, MSW Development Director Reed Coleman Marketing Director & Media Contact Tiffini Mueller Major Gifts Director Jeannie Ortega Events Coordinator Miana Hoyt Volunteer Coordinator Kristi Ketchum Creative Specialist Michelle Leal Board of Directors President Scott Loepp, DVM Frontier Veterinary Clinic Vice President Bob Bruno, DVM Moreland Veterinary Hospital Treasurer Jim Harnish, CPA Ford Black & Co., PC Secretary Jack Pessia Past President, Oregon State Bar Assoc.
