					                          Plan for Passing Praxis I

After you have met with a member of the Office of Teacher Preparation and
have been advised about the need to take Praxis I (usually in freshman or
sophomore years for 5-year students), you should take the following steps:

The first time you take Praxis I:

   1. Arrange to obtain study materials for the Praxis I test, available in book
stores, such as Barnes and Noble, libraries, and online. Some Praxis I
study materials are on reserve in the Captain John Smith library under Soc
314L, and some Praxis I study materials are available online from Praxis at
www.ets.org/praxis. If you are planning to purchase Praxis I study
materials, numerous sources are available from Amazon.com, from $10-
20.00 for new books and under $10 for used.
   2. Other Praxis info is available from www.praxisprepinfo.com.
   3. Attend the SVEA Praxis I workshop, held in early September. Contact Dr.
Marsha Sprague for details (msprague@cnu.edu or 594-7388).
   4. Call the Prometric Testing Center at 757-873-0208 and schedule a
date/time for the Praxis I administration.
   5. Have all Praxis I scores forwarded to CNU as well as to yourself.

If you do not pass the Praxis I on the first attempt, then:

   1. Keep in mind that for a second or subsequent Praxis administration, you
do not necessarily need to take all three parts over. Target the areas that
either a) received the lowest marks or b) give the greatest chance of a
      point increase if retaken.
   2. Attend the SVEA Praxis I workshop, held in early fall. Contact Dr. Marsha
Sprague for details (msprague@cnu.edu or 594-7388).
   3. Continue to study all Praxis I study materials, paying particular attention
to those areas listed as areas of strength/weakness on the Praxis I score
      report.
   4. For math, contact Lynn Gardner, author of Praxis Made Easy at
lynngar98@aol.com. For $20.00, you can download her book—a
wonderful, step-by-step tutorial for the mathematics part of Praxis I.
Download will run about 100 pages.
   5. Call the Prometric Testing Center at 757-873-0208 and schedule a
date/time for the Praxis I administration.
   6. Have all Praxis I scores forwarded to CNU as well as to yourself.
If you do not pass the Praxis I exam for a second time, then:

   1. Schedule a tutoring session with the Office of Teacher Preparation. For
math, contact Dr. Marsha Sprague (msprague@cnu.edu, or 594-7388); for
reading and writing, contact Deborah Farina (dfarina@cnu.edu, or 594-
      7538).
   2. For math, contact Lynn Gardner, author of Praxis Made Easy at
lynngar98@aol.com. For $20.00, you can download her book—a
wonderful, step-by-step tutorial for the mathematics part of Praxis I.
Download will run about 100 pages.
   3. Continue to study all Praxis I study materials, paying particular attention
to those areas listed as areas of strength/weakness on the Praxis I score
      report.
   4. Consider taking the test in a paper-pencil version instead of computer-
based. This will necessitate pre-registering for the Praxis I test and may
involve traveling to a local college or university for testing. You can
register online for a paper-pencil version at www.ets.org/praxis.
   5. Call the Prometric Testing Center at 757-873-0208 to schedule a
      date/time, or visit www.ets.org/praxis to schedule/register for a paper-
      pencil Praxis I test administration.
   6. Have all Praxis I scores forwarded to CNU as well as to yourself.
