East Cobb Eagle Scouts Named
Walton High School seniors, Wyatt Jones, Preston Elliot
and Michael Ayres, from Mt. Bethel’s Troop 1011 recently
achieved the Rank of Eagle Scout. Close friends since a
young age, each contributed complicated projects benefit-
ing the community of East Cobb. Wyatt’s project consisted
of constructing 5 jumbo sized picnic tables and 5 in-ground
benches installed at their alma mater, Eastside Elementary
School. Preston’s project was to regrade and widen a sec-
tion of the Kennesaw Mountain Trail, add stone stairs and
install a split rail fence protecting vegetation on the moun-
tain. Michael’s project also benefited Kennesaw Mountain
Park with the restoration of a 100 foot section of Kennesaw
Mountain Trail. His project included a 10 percent grade ele-
vation, regrading, erosion and drainage improvements. Each
project took over 125 man-hours to complete.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank awarded to a Senior
Scout in the Boy Scouts of the America. A joint ceremony,
attended by local dignitaries, was held at Mt. Bethel United
s Preston Elliot, Wyatt Jones and Michael Ayres. Methodist Church.

Babies Can’t Wait
Provides Early intervention to
infants and Toddlers
Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) is a comprehensive,
family-centered, coordinated program that provides early
intervention services to infants and toddlers with disabili-
ties or developmental delays and their families. Since
1987, Babies Can’t Wait has been administered by the
Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of
Public Health, Family Health Branch. For families of
eligible infants and toddlers, BCW provides a window of
opportunity for their children to grow, learn, and develop
to their fullest potential. BCW gives infants and toddlers,
whose brains are growing very quickly, the opportunity to
gain skills, and the chance to teach families to help their
children learn these skills.
Children and families in every county in Georgia
can access early intervention services. Anyone can refer
a child to Babies Can’t Wait. In order to refer a child
to BCW for an evaluation, contact: Beth Mathison,
Coordinator-BCW COBB/DOUGLAS Cobb and Douglas

Preschool Picassos
At Walker, our Preschoolers learn about Picasso and Dali. They learn
about Monet and Seurat. They learn about styles and techniques,
and apply them as they draw, paint, cut, tear, mold and create –
beautiful works that appear in our annual Preschool Art Show. It's
the wonder of creativity. It's the wonder of Walker.

5 Steps for Selecting
Quality Child Care
Step 1: Start Early
Start looking as far in advance as you can. No matter what
type of care you are considering – a child care center or care
in someone else’s home – finding the right child care option
can take some time.
Step 2: Make Some Calls
Begin your search by calling your local child care centers.
Step 3: Visit and Ask Questions
Make sure you visit the child care centers you are consider-
ing. Find out about these key indicators of quality:
• Adult to Child Ratio
>>Ask how many children there are for each adult. You
want your child to get plenty of attention. The younger your
child, the more important this is. Babies need an adult to
child ratio of no more than 1:4 (one adult for four infants),
while four-year-olds can do well with a ratio of 1:10 (one
adult for ten children).

Kids Make a Stand for Haiti
By Stacy Baca
It’s a mother’s instinct to protect her children but, the
day after the Haitian earthquake, I called my three young
sons to my side and, together, we watched the ruination
unfold. Soon, my attention turned from the television to the
boys’ awed faces. Before the next commercial, the boys had
dug from their banks fifteen dollars and thirty-one cents to
set up a cookie and lemonade stand to raise funds for Haiti.
We invited our fun family friends, the Villones, to make
lemonade and signs. The Bradford kids joined us with lunch
to share and the Wolfes replenished our cookie supply.
Cars jammed our residential street. Some paid twenty
dollars for a single cookie. Some children brought their own
pennies. Our kids kept chalk tallies of our earnings on the
driveway and wrestled in the grass between customers.
The lemonade and cookie stand earned a whopping
$389.81 for UNICEF’s Haitian rescue efforts. And our kids
s Max Baca, Henry Bradford, Hannah Bradford, leo Baca, learned not only about earning power, but, more importantly,
Makenna Villone, Charlie Baca, and Colin Villone at their cookie earned the power to make change in the world. They made

‘Trap-Neuter-Return’ Program
by Marianne McGoldrick
from Dr. Miller’s patients and staff, the dental office has
sponsored the TNR of at least ten feral cats, including
the five cats that have colonized behind their office. “We
started out with the goal to maximize the quality of life
for this colony of feral cats and to eliminate the existing
colony over time through attrition, but we name our cats,
know their individual personalities and have come to love
them dearly,” says Miller. Although the cats, like most feral
cats, will not allow anyone to pet them, they do greet the
staff every morning and walk them to the door. “We like to
think of our feral cats as our little tigers,” adds Miller.
The Humane Society of the United States recognizes
that there are millions of feral cats living all over the
nation. The only real solution is to make sure feral cats get
spayed or neutered. “I would like to challenge other busi-
nesses to do what we’ve done,” says Miller. “We can make

covered a colony of feral cats living in the woods of Shaw
Park behind their dental office in East Marietta. The dental
office became the cats’ caretakers, but they knew that
food would not be enough.
Feral cats are the offspring of lost or abandoned pet
cats or other feral cats who are not spayed or neutered.
“I think that a lot of cats have been dumped,” says Patti
Miller, business manager of the dental office. “Most feral
cats are abandoned and dumped, and they become wild
because they have no human interaction.” Feral cats
remain a huge problem in communities across the nation.
Female feral cats can produce litters two to three times a
year, and can get pregnant as early as four to five months
of age. Feral cats will give birth to kittens who will, in
turn, become feral without early human contact and grow
up to produce another litter. It is an endless cycle.
Dr. Miller’s staff decided to put a stop to the cycle by
beginning a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program. “One day
I was sitting in the office and just said ‘we need to catch
them,’” says Miller. “We decided to be part of the solu-
tion.” TNR is a strategy for improving the lives of feral cats
and, most importantly, reducing their numbers. At the very
least a feral cat who is TNRed is spayed or neutered so
they can no longer reproduce, vaccinated against rabies
and surgically ear-tipped on one ear (a nationally recog-
nized sign of TNR).

Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors
The American Red Cross urges individuals to donate blood as soon as possible. The current blood supply has dropped critically
low throughout the Southeast. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative
and A negative blood donors. Blood shortages often occur because individual donations decrease, along with the number of organi-
zations that are able to sponsor blood drives.
Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with
type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which
only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or
visit www.givelife.org.

Top 10 Cities Cited for Senior Solutions…for the
Senior Growth Journey of Aging
Urban Institute researchers are calling the influx of retir-
ing baby boomers a “tsunami of senior growth in the next
decade,” and pinpoints U.S. cities where most of these
individuals will retire – which identifies those markets where
senior housing and care also will see the most growth.
Researchers base their prognostications on where most
baby boomers have retired so far this decade, reports U.S.
News & World Report. “For example, the Urban Institute
predicts that Georgia’s senior population will increase by 40
percent between 2010 and 2020 due to the aging in place of
baby boomers alone, and only an additional 4 percent will be
due to the in-migration of people 65 and over.”
s Dawn Reed, CSA, Certified Senior Advisor.
Here are the top 10 metro areas that will experience the
most growth due to retiring baby boomers: Growing up with a grandmother with Alzheimer’s
and a father who battled lung cancer, Dawn Reed, CEO
and founder of Aloha to Senior Solutions, knows firsthand

and establish Aloha to Senior Solutions to support families
5. Las Vegas-Paradise, NV (27.8%) by “care coaching” them through the journey of aging.

Specialized care can mean quicker recoveries.
In addition to having dedicated pediatric specialists and equipment designed specifically for kids,
Children’s offers streamlined care. For instance, if your child had a CAT scan that needed further
evaluation, we can call a pediatric specialist directly, which could save you days, possibly weeks, of
stress and uncertainty. So the next time your doctor recommends a specialist, ask to see a pediatric
specialist. For more information, visit us at www.choa.org

‘‘I’m helping hearts.’’
take care of their others
“I was exercising and when my heart rate rose, my jaw went numb and I had some
shortness of breath. I called my doctor and saw him the next day. After just a few
minutes, he sent me to WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine. It was a huge shock to
find that I needed a quintuple bypass. But Dr. Cooper and the whole cardiology
team really listened and took care of me.
“This was a life-changing experience. I’ve just become chair of the
WellStar Foundation’s Cardiac Community Council. It’s important
to me to give back and help raise money and awareness for the
people that gave me my health, and my peace of mind.”
If you have heart, you can do just about anything.
Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance.
And most of all, it takes heart.
That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals,
WellStar is helping people like Tony with a world-class cardiac
network. From prevention to catheterization and open-heart
surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole hearts into taking
care of yours.
