How can I become a HERO philanthropist

GT HEROs Fall 2007 MEMBER INFORMATION PACKET “How am I, as a student, involved in GT HEROs?” As a member of GT HEROs, you are involved by: 1. Pledging to raise $50 or more by the end of the fall semester. 2. Participating in GT HEROs events with HERO children (mainly FALL FESTIVAL) and fundraising opportunities. “I would... but I’m broke. What do I do?” No worries! We have come up with several ways for you to reach the monetary goal without cleaning out your bank account or stealing from your roommate: 1.) Get a HERO T-shirt $10 2.) Sell HERO discount cards $10 each  It’s like a coupon book, only better. Local businesses have generously agreed to supply deals and discounts to the cardholder. And it doesn’t expire till August 2008! Pay us upfront for each card you are planning to sell, and then sell them on your own time. 3.) Canning before GT vs. UNC game $unlimited!  What is canning? Walk around with a partner and hold these huge cans (think: cafeteria baked beans) and ask tailgaters and game-goers to donate to help you reach your pledge! (Details TBA) 4.) Submit Addresses $15 max  $3 per address… 5 address limit. That’s $15 right there!  Turn in addresses of family members, family friends from home, or people in the community who you think will read these letters we mail to them and donate on your behalf! (If you’re thinking about getting addresses from your friends at school, it might be better just to walk up to them and ask for a donation!)  Any donations received before the due date of Nov. 30 will count towards your pledge! Hooray! 5.) Independent fundraising 1 H.E.R.O. stands for Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out $unlimited! GT HEROs Fall 2007 MEMBER INFORMATION PACKET  If submitting 5 addresses was a piece of cake and you’ve got plenty more you wish to add, then do it! We’ll have donation letters available online that you can download and send to your friends and family (or just ask them in person)! 6.) Attend End of the Year / HERO Member Appreciation Celebration  Finish off your monetary pledge goal by: - Donating the remainder amount of your pledge at the door - TBA ways (possible raffle, etc.)  If you’ve reached your pledge, COME OUT AND HAVE FUN! EXAMPLE Sell three of discount cards Get a shirt Turn in 5 addresses TOTAL $30 $10 $15 $55 Wow! “Can I get my entire organization get involved?” ABSOLUTELY, and NEW this fall, you can FUNDRAISE WITH A Team! 4 Team Categories: 1) Student organization 2) Fraternity 3) Sorority 4) Individual Winners of all categories will get to GO ONTO COURT during one of the big basketball games (either UNC or Duke – details TBA) in January! Categories 1-3 will be based on highest Average Amount Raised Per Person. Additionally, at least 50% of your organization must be signed up and participating. Residence halls can participate, too! Why join? H.E.R.O. for Children is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the Quality of Life of children in Georgia infected/affected by HIV and AIDS. GT HEROs is a collegiate fundraising arm for H.E.R.O. for Children. THE NUMBERS 8 12,000 95 500 12 1    The ranking of Georgia with regards to highest Pediatric AIDS cases in the US. Number of children in the State of Georgia affected by AIDS Percentage of children in the SuperHEROs program who come from household incomes of $10,000/yr or less. Number of organizations in Georgia working with HIV/AIDS (Of these 500 organizations) designed work with children, providing basic needs such as housing, food, education, and medicine. Number of organizations dedicated to improving QUALITY OF LIFE for children: HERO for Children We are the one and only organization in Georgia that focuses solely on Quality of Life programs for children affected with HIV/AIDS. Many of their basic needs are already being met. This is the one niche that is not. They may have a life, but are they truly living? H.E.R.O aims to provide these children the experiences that helped define our childhood, with new opportunities and experiences, and motivating role models. H.E.R.O. currently serves children in Metro Atlanta ages 6-16 years who are either infected with (48%) or in the home of one or more parents/ siblings who are infected by (52%) HIV/AIDS. 90% of H.E.R.O. children come from families with an annual family income of $10,000 or less. Since 2003, H.E.R.O. has provided more than 12,000 hours of Quality of Life care for more than 200 children through 800 volunteers, and educated more than 6,000 students on college campuses about HIV/AIDS. 3 H.E.R.O. stands for Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out GT HEROs Fall 2007 MEMBER INFORMATION PACKET So where does all this money I raised go? The money raised by GT HEROs goes to support the H.E.R.O. for Children organization and all costs associated with the events and programs that this organization provides.      Planning and paying for the SuperHEROs Mentoring Program Rising HEROes Life Skills Program 4 One Day Special Events Staff to run each program All marketing/promotional material needed to assist with fundraising efforts and events throughout the year. SuperHEROs Mentoring Program—The SuperHEROes Mentoring Program is a fun and inspirational program that provides volunteers with the opportunity to be positive role models and strengthen the self-esteem of a child affected by HIV/AIDS by serving as a mentor. A SuperHERO commits 2 years to be with a child. Each SuperHERO:    Spends one on one quality time with a child twice a month. Attends monthly events planned by HERO: a Braves game, movies, Six Flags and other fun things. Strengthens a child’s self esteem and life skills by being a good friend and participating in the HERO curriculum for child development. Rising HEROes Life Skills Program - A year round program developed in collaboration with the CDC and Emory School of Public Health that helps develop life skills to enable these children to overcome the challenges of HIV/AIDS in their life. This program allows for the children to develop skills to cope in three areas:    Daily lives at home At school In their communities 4 WOW! One Day Special Events: 1) HERO for a Day @ Piedmont Park 2) Fall Festival of Fun @ Georgia Tech 3) HERO Olympics @ UGA 4) Holiday of HEROs- Children receive Christmas gifts delivered to their homes 4 H.E.R.O. stands for Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out GT HEROs Fall 2007 MEMBER INFORMATION PACKET Key Dates to Mark on your Calendar  October 11 Member Meeting 6:30 PM – HERO member meeting in the IC room 111. Pick up T-shirts, HERO cards, and get important information about coming to the Fall Festival. Learn about November plans. Free food/drinks!  OCTOBER 14 FALL FESTIVAL OF FUN This is the chance for all HERO members and HERO children to come together for a day of fun! This year, we are also a Homecoming Philanthropy, so get your organization involved and compete in Homecoming as well. Location & Time TBA.  November 12 Member Meeting Time and location TBD – HERO member meeting. Get ready for canning on Saturday! Watch some highlights from Fall Festival. Free food/drinks.  November 17 Canning @ Football Game Finish raising your money by canning with other HERO members before the football game against UNC on Saturday. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to make it to the game. We’ll just be canning to tailgaters BEFORE the game!  November 30 End of Year Celebration! Just showing our members some APPRECIATION for their hard work for raising their money this fall and participating in our events!!!
