EUREKA! – From Design Brief to Shop Window

Design-Nation, in partnership with the Design Council, Business Link for London, Furniture Link and
Connect UK, announces the launch of Eureka! - an exciting new design-to-retail pilot project. The Eureka!
Collection of products will launch at this year’s London Design Festival (20 to 30 September 2004) and will
be available from October in retail outlets throughout the UK.

Bridging the gap between designer, manufacturer and retailer, the Eureka! project aims to facilitate this
dialogue, creating a platform for innovative and commercially viable consumer products. Promoting
excellence in the commercial product design process, the wide range of products in the Eureka! Collection
have been created by nine Design Nation members, based on briefs from invited UK retailers.

Four prestigious High Street retailers, Crabtree & Evelyn, Heal’s, Fired Earth Interiors and The Conran
Shop, have joined the Eureka! Project. Each has picked Design-Nation members to fulfil briefs for a range
of products which include a plastic wine rack, a wall mounted soap/lotion dispenser, a full length mirror,
rugs, outdoor and indoor lighting, a computer work station, ceramic and glass interior accessories, and table
mats and coasters.

Acknowledging the added value that these designers bring to the end-product, the Eureka! project also
seeks to challenge the designer – manufacturer – retailer supply chain, in order to keep British product
design both cost-effective and quality-driven. The original briefs were given to the designers in April 2004,
allowing just six months for the final products to be in-store. Dovetailing the entire project with UK
manufacturers, the Design Council (as part of its on-going Design Campaign - Manufacturing), Furniture
Link, Business Link London and Connect UK have all contributed in pooling British manufacturing talent,
making this project succeed from drawing board to shop window.

Designers involved in the Eureka! project include Andrew Tanner Design, BDM Design, Helen Yardley,
Jasper Startup, Jona Hoad, Julie Haslam, Katy Holford, Krassa Studio, Massimo Fenati (see notes to
editors). Highlighting the international reputation of British contemporary design, this prestigious list includes
of some of the most exciting and innovative product designers currently working in the UK.

The Eureka! Collection will be on show from 21 to 30 September 2004 at Furniture Works, 41 Commercial
Road, London E1, as part of the second London Design Festival (www.londondesignfestival.com) and at
subsequent in-store displays at all four retail outlets. Eureka! products will go on sale to the public from late
October onwards.

The Press and Private Preview of the Eureka Collection will be on Wednesday 22 September from
3pm onwards with internationally renowned guests from British design attending. Forums for
retailers, buyers and designers will run throughout the event.
