PlayStation 3 is compatible with Vantage-HD. However some advanced features need to be specifically configured in order to function correctly. Calibre recommends that Vantage-HD be used with PlayStation 3 systems installed for the primary purpose of BD/DVD video playback only. Please read the following notes for more information. 24Hz mode (PS3 revision 1.8 and higher) Vantage-HD does support the high quality 1920x1080p 24Hz feature from the PS3 and will do the necessary frame conversion from 24fps to 60Hz (59.94fps) before outputting to the display. This may result in slightly smoother frame motion compared with a direct PS3 to display connection as Vantage-HD will correctly perform a telecine 3:2 pulldown conversion of the highest quality. To enable compatibility do the following: From the PS3 Settings menu, select -BD/DVD Settings > BD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI) > Automatic. From the Vantage-HD picture options, set the frame rate to Auto or 59.94. Do not set the Vantage-HD frame rate to 50.00 as this will introduce severe motion judder. Note: At this time Vantage-HD cannot output 1080p at 24Hz. This feature will likely be implemented in a future firmware revision. RGB Full mode – HDMI only (PS3 revision 1.8 and higher) Depending on the type of display being used, better colour reproduction for movie playback may be achieved by utilising RGB Full mode in conjunction with Vantage-HD rather than the usual Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr format type. To enable compatibility do the following: Configure PS3 Settings > BD/DVD Settings > BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) > RGB. Then configure PS3 Settings > Display Settings > RGB Full Range (HDMI) > Full. RGB Full mode extends the PS3 colour output values from a limited 16-235 to the full range of 0-255 per colour channel. Many modern 8-bit and newer 10-bit panel LCD and Plasma displays may benefit from the increased colour spread and dynamic range. Depending on the equipment being used it may be necessary to configure Vantage-HD Picture settings > Black-Level > 0IRE (normally for HDMI devices, Vantage-HD should have its black level set to 7.5IRE). The displays own brightness setting may also need Playstation 3 to Vantage-HD Connectivity Guide to be increased to achieve solid black. A calibration tool can be downloaded here http://www.calibreuk.com/documents/Brightness.jpg. Use this for optimum results. Save the file to memory card media and view the image via the PS3 photo viewer. If your display is capable you should be able to see all or most of the black squares. Adjust the settings as detailed above in order to make the upper-left most square as close to pure black as possible. Blacks should now appear deeper, most colours should be richer and more vivid, and whites should be more intense. Any fine tuning can then be performed using the Vantage-HD controls. This new mode also allows for official support on PS3 systems for even higher quality, certified xvYCC colour, sometimes commonly associated with ‘deep colour’ (via HDMI 1.3 spec only). A compatible display and encoded software is also required to achieve the full potential of this colour technology and at present these are very rare. Calibre is currently working towards implementing this technology with the forthcoming Vantage-HD HDMI 1.3 expansion module available later this year. Multi Channel Audio When connected via HDMI, only Dolby Digital 5.1Ch is supported under the current specification for Vantage-HD. Uncompressed Linear PCM 5.1-7.1, Dolby True HD and DTS -Master Audio are not supported when output from Vantage-HD. To correctly use these formats connect the PS3 first to a suitable HDMI equipped amplifier/receiver (HDMI 1.3 capable in the case of DTHD and DTS-MA). Common HDMI /HDCP issues Mode switching between BD/DVD playback and XMB (cross media bar) may suffer from HDCP related static noise and /or blue screen symptoms accompanied by audible pops or clicks. This is not a malfunction and will not cause any damage to your equipment.
