                  MANAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION:

                     Today I am here to present a paper on industrial

Liquid/solid waste management. Waste management means best

utilization of waste material in a profitable way. In process industries

there will be some wastage of production along with actual

production. For example in a paper industry lime sludge (Calcium

Carbonate) which is a waste, is the best raw material for cement

industry. Similarly molasses and bagasse which are wastes in sugar

industry are the best raw materials for alcoholic and paper industries

respectively. In a Rayon industry the sodium sulphate which is a waste

product is the best make-up chemical for paper industry.

These are already proven and best utilized Waste raw materials.

So I would like to say that a waste material in one industry is a

wealth for other industry. So the aim of Waste Management

is to explore the methods for proper utilization of

waste materials to the best possible products. Though the waste

materials are best utilized in other industry, the purpose of waste

management is to minimize the wastage in the parent industry and to

maximize the production and profits.

METHODS TO CONTROL WASTE MANAGEMENT

1.BETTER PROCESS CONTROL:

                      The better process control will always help us

in reducing the wastages. For example, in a paper industry if good

quality of lime is utilized in causticizers, then the quantity of lime

sludge (calcium carbonate) is minimized. Similarly in any process

industry if good quality of raw materials are used then their

wastages are also be minimized. For this good quality control of the

input raw materials by quality control laboratory is very much needed.


2.GOOD HOUSE KEEPING:

                      House keeping means maintenance of machines

and equipments in a good running condition , cleanliness and the

Environment. For example the spillages, overflows and pipeline leakages

will increase wastage. So good house keeping is the best method of waste

management.

3.PREVENTION TECHNIQUES:

                      “Prevention is better than cure”. Planning of

machine maintenance and shutdown schedules for preventive

maintenance of equipments will help a lot in reducing the break-downs

and there by wastages and down time. For example periodical

shut-down, overhauling of the equipments, electrical, mechanical

and instrument maintenance will give excellent results for waste management.

4.INPUT MATERIAL CHANGE:

                            So many new technologies are

developing and so much of research work is done to improve the

methods of process industries. For example chlorine is used as a

bleaching agent in many industries. But chlorine is very toxic and

harmful for human life. Now new input materials as bleaching

agents are invented and best results are proved. Hydrogen peroxide

bleaching and Enzyme bleaching are some of the latest and best

environmental friendly methods developed for the bleaching purpose. So the

Management should change their input materials for the best waste

management and environmental friendly process.

5.TECHONOLOGY CHANGE:

                     In the process industry, so many new technologies are

developing day by day. The management should adopt and update

their method of operation to simplify the process, to reduce there

production cost and wastage. For example in any power boilers

previously great type ash removal system was in practice. Now it is

replaced by the latest technology of fluidized bed type boilers

were the combustion of the fuel is maximum and the losses are

reduced to two percent.

6.EQUIPMENT MODIFICATION:

                     Previously pneumatic controlled instruments were

used in process industries. Now electronic instruments and DCS are ruling

the world, which are precise and accurate. Latest equipment

modification is a must in a process industry for waste management and

profitability.

7.PRODUCT REFORMULATION AND MODIFICATION :

                     The basic methods of the process are to be

modified or reformulated to improve the efficiency and reduce the

wastage. For example in old cement factories wet type raw material

feeding to the rotary kiln was in practice which involved the

consumption of huge quantity of furnace oil for drying and

burning purpose. In modern cement factories dry type raw material

feeding is adopted which reduced the furnace oil consumption and

their by reduced the wastage of fuel.

8.ON-SITE RECYCLING OR RECOVERY:

                     In a process industry there will be some

spillages and overflows, which cannot be avoided in a continuos

process. Methods like wastage recovery pits are to be introduced to

take these wastages into the system for better waste management .

Similarly if there is any defect in the final product, methods are to

be developed to recycle the defective product for producing good products.

9.PRODUCTION OF USEFUL BY-PRODUCTS:

                     The by-products in a process industry are

nothing but wealth from waste. So quality control of the by-products

will fetch good profits. New methods and technologies are

to be explored for the best utilization of the industrial wastes and

by-products

       EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT

       For any process industry effluent treatment is a must for environmental

Pollution control and efficient Waste Management.

       For example in a paper industry the mill effluent water is treated for using

it for agricultural purpose. The effluent water is also recycled for washing and

cleaning purposes.The filer cake of the ETP is a very good manure.

EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT IN SPB :

       The waste water in the mill is taken to a 180ft clarifier where the water

and the solids are separated. The underflow of the clarifier is taken to a vacuum

filter and filtered. The filter cake contains the pulp fiber is use for making

Card boards. There are many small scale industries started for making

pulp boards from the filter cake. The overflow of the 180ft clarifier is sent to

secondary treatment of the effluent treatment plant.

SECONDARY EFFLUENT TREATMENT:

       In the secondary treatment of the effluent water Aeration of the water is

done after mixing the nutrients like Urea and Diammonium phospate..The

overflow of the secondary clarifier is taken into a tration tank from where it is

pump-out for irrigation purpose. 25 % of the secondary clarifier underflow is

recirculated. 75 % of the clarifier is pumped to Centrifuge for increasing the

consistency of the cake. The filter cake at 70 % moisture is supplied to farmers

for irrigation purpose. Bagasse pith filtrate is sent to Anerobic lagoon for

treatment. The overflow of the lagoon is sent to secondary treatment along with

180ft clarifier overflow water.
