Dua'a for Travel
The following are Dua`s which a traveller should make a habit recite
Dua to recite when commencing the journey.
“In the name of Allah! I have placed faith Bismillahi,aamantu billahi, wa tawakkaltu
in Allah and I have put full trust in Allah. allallahi, ma-sha-allah, la haula wala
(It is) as Allah wills! There is no strength
quawwata illa billah.
and no power save with Allah”.
“O Allah! Protect me and protect what is Allahumma ahadhni wahfadh ma ma`ee wa
with me (my possessions), and deliver me ballighnee wa balligh ma ma ma`ee bi
(to my destination and delivery what is
blalaghikalhusn, billahi astaftihu wa billahi
with me the best of your delivery. By
astanjihu wa bi muhammadin sallallahu
Allah I commence (my journey) and by
alaiyhi wa aalihi atawajjahu. Allahukka
Allah I seek to accomplish (the purpose of
my journey) and by Muhammad (s.a.w.) I sahhil lee kulla huzoonatin wa dhallil lee
have set out (towards my destination). „O‟ kulla huzoonatin wa dhallil lee kulla
Allah make me overcome all (my grief); su`oobatin wa a`tinee mina khairi kullih
and make easy for me all difficulties; and akhtar mimma arju wasirf annee minash-
give me more of goodness than I hope sharri mimma uhad-diru fee aafi;yatin, ya
for; and keep away all evil of which I am
apprehensive for my health.” “O the most
Dua` to be recited when mounting or boarding the means of transport
“In the name of Allah and there is no Bismillahi walaa Quwwata illa Billahi.
power save with Allah. Praise be to Allah Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee sakh-khara lana
who made this (the means of transport)
haadha wama kaunna lahu muqrineen .
subservient to us, and we (by ourselves)
could never have accomplished it”.
“All praise is for Allah Who guided us in Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee hadaana Lil-Islam
Islam and taught us the Quran and graced wa allamanal –Qu`ran wa manna alayna bi
us with Muhammad (s.a.w.). Glory be to
muhammadin sallallhu alayhi wa aalihi.
Allah Who made this (the means of Subhanal-ladhee sakh-khara lana haadha
transport) subservient to us, and we (by wama kunna lahu muqrineen, Wa inna illa
ourselves) could never have accomplished
rabbina lamuqaliboon. Walhamdu lillahi
it. And surely to our Lord we shall return.
rabbil aalameen. Allahumma antal haamilu
All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the
aladhdhahr walmusta`anu alal-amr. Wa
worlds. `O` Allah! You are the Facilitator
of the journey and the helper in the affair antas-sahibu fis-sfar wal khaleefatu fil-ahli
and you are the Companion in the wal-maali wal-walad. Allahumma anta
journey, and the Successor (incharge of adhdee wa naasiree.
my) family, property and son. `O` Allah!
You are my supporter and my Helper to
Dua` to be recited when travelling by ship
“In the name of Allah! The Master! The Bismillahil malikil Haq. Wama
Truth! They esteemed not Allah with an qadarullahahaqqa qadarihi wal ardhu
esteem due to Him. The whole earth is
jamee`an qabdhatuhu yaumall qiyamati
under His hold on the day of resurrection
was-sawamatu matwiyyatun biyameenihi
and the heavens folded at His command.
subhaanahu wata`ala amma yshrikoon.
Glory be to him and the High above! He is
beyond the attribution of any partner. In Bismillahi majraha wa mursaha inna
the name of Allah be its course (sailing) rabbee laghafoorun Raheemen.
and its arrival (anchorage). Verily my
Lord is All Forgiving, All Merciful”.
Dua` to be recited when entering a new town, city or village.
“O‟ Allah! I beseech from you its (town, Allahumma innee as-aluka khairaha wa
city or village) goodness and seek refuge a`oodhu bika min sharriha. Allahumma
in you from its wickedness. „O‟ Allah! let
habbibna ilaa ahliha wa habbib saalihi
its inhabitants love us and let us love its
Dua` to be recited when dismounted or disembarking.
“O`My Lord! Cause me to disembark a Rabbee anzilnee manzilan mubarakan wa
blessed alighting and you are the Best of anta khairul-munzileen.
all who cause to alight”.
Dua` to be recited on a return journey
“If Allah wills, we repent and seek pardon Aa-iboona taa-iboona insha Allah aabi
from Him; we worship Him and Him we doona raki`oona saajidoona lirabbina
bow and prostrate. Our Lord we praise.
haamidoon. Allahumma lakal hamdu ala
„O` Allah! Make this return (journey) of
hifdhika iyyaya fee safaree wa hadharee.
mine a blessed one, a fruitful one,
Allahummaj`al aubatee haadhihi
associated with a sincere repentance; one
that will make prosperity incumbent for mubarakatan maimoonatan maqroonatan
me. „O‟ the Most Merciful”. be taubatin nasoohin toojablee bihas-
sa`adah ya Arhamar-Rahimeen.
OTHER RECOMMENDED ACTS
Imam Ja`ffer as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said:
“Whoever recites QulHuwallahu Ahad (sura Tawheed or al-Ikhlaas) ten times
when leaving his house, he will remain in the protection of the Al-Mighty Allah and
His angles until he returns to his house”. Ref: (Makarimul Akhlaaq)
“The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) in his journey use to praise Allah (s.w.t.) by saying
SUBHAAN ALLAH when dismounting and ALLAHU AKBER when mounting”.
Some scholars also emphasise the recitation of Tasbeeh of Sayyidah Fatima (a.s.)
daughter of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). The Tasbeeh is recited in the following
34 times Allahu Akber
33 times Alhumdu Lillah and
33 times Subhan Allah.
