IN BRIEF: A fantastic business Netbook with a stunning screen, but low battery life
enovo is renowned for its high-quality business laptops. The lightweight IdeaPad S10e (£299 inc. VAT) is its first Netbook and provides fantastic usability and a stunning screen, making it by far one of the best Netbooks you can buy. The tiny 1.1kg chassis is not only slim and light, but also incredibly strong. Even the thin screen panel is reassuringly sturdy, making it well suited to regular travel use. The 138-minute battery life is less pleasing, however, and falls below the three-hour minimum we expect. Usability is truly outstanding. The keyboard is very firm and comfortable during long-term use, although the keys are no larger than those of other Netbooks. The touchpad and mouse buttons are very small, but equally usable.

Basic performance
Performance is as basic as expected, but is suitable for web browsing and general office use. The Intel Atom processor and 1024MB of memory are standard Netbook fare, but we found applications such as Microsoft Office ran smoothly enough for frequent daily use. Equally, the integrated Intel graphics chip provides power for viewing videos and photos, and even playing the occasional game of Solitaire. As with most Netbooks, however, there is no optical drive, so you have no access to DVDs or CDs. The standout feature is undoubtedly the stunning 10.2-inch screen. It’s one of the sharpest, brightest and most colourful Netbook screens we’ve seen, and its impact really adds to the overall usability. The only downside to the screen is its

slightly limited angle of movement. The panel can only be folded back roughly 45-degrees from the vertical on its barrel-hinge. This can make it somewhat awkward to use on fold-down train or plane tables, which may prove frustrating for regular travellers. Storage is more impressive. The 160GB hard drive is large enough for all your office files, as well as a few videos and photos for some travel entertainment. The 4-in-1 card reader also allows access to the most common Flash storage card formats. Rounding out the features is a tiny camera built into the screen panel, which is ideal for live online video-conferencing. The one-year warranty is less pleasing, however, as delivery costs are not covered by the policy, so you will find yourself having to pay all of the related fees in the event of a fault occurring. Despite these minor flaws, the IdeaPad S10e is a fantastic corporate Netbook. Its limited battery life and screen movement may deter more frequent travellers, but the stunning screen and great usability easily put it up there with the best Netbooks we’ve seen so far.

This is Intel’s new processor designed solely for use in low-cost laptops, Netbooks and desktop PCs. It uses older technology – hence the 533MHz FSB and 1MB of Level 2 cache – but as it works at a reduced voltage it can be used in small laptops – up to 10 inches in size – as well as fan-less machines.
