Dewi Pascal Bakker was born on February 17th in Genemuiden, The Netherlands. He
graduated from Gymnasium in 1995 at the Rijksscholengemeenschap Heerenveen. After that
he started studying Biology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. For the
specialization of Molecular biology he did research in the Eurkaryotic Microbiology
department at the University of Groningen (Prof. W. Harder) and the Institute of
Biochemistry at the technical University of Graz, Austria (Prof. S. Kohlwein). He graduated
‘cum laude’ in 1999. From January 2000 to December 2003 he had been working as a
researcher at the Biomedical Engineering (BME) department of the University of Groningen
that led to this thesis. In 2004 he commenced medical school at the University of Groningen.
