. This seminar has been designed to help councillors fulfill their role as arts policy makers in their local authorities. Councillors are regularly involved in the artistic and cultural life of their local communities and are keenly aware of the contribution, which local arts and culture can make to improve the quality of life of these communities. The local government arts service seeks to provide for the needs and expectations of the artists and their audiences. These needs and expectations are in a constant state of development, change and challenge as society itself developments. Councillors from their key positions of social trust and leadership are well aware of the importance of having a clear understanding of the local artistic and cultural needs and opportunities. Also from their position in the democratic process, they have the capacity to effectively champion the developments needed in partnership with the arts community and other relevant agencies and groups. This seminar will provide councillors with the knowledge and skills to help them to do that. The speakers at this seminar are experienced professionals, who have been involved for many years in the Irish arts world.
