. A warm and friendly Welcome to

Vernet-les-Bains and Maison “OMAN”
Location and Environment
Dear tourist, “As soon as you go south to the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees reveal their two distinct features: their mountains and pastoral aspects. In natural surroundings, both peaceful and discreet, the roads lead you to two extraordinary rd denouements: The 43 Regional Nature Park of France named „Pyrénée Catalanes‟, with the majestic Mont Canigou (2784m), and the medieval village Vernet-les-Bains (Station Climatérique) with our small and charming stone house named „Maison OMAN‟, just in the heart of this massif”. Due to its outstanding healthy microclimate with 300 days of sunshine per year, Rudyard Kipling called the village “the „Paradise of the Pyrenees”. From the village, there is only a 45-min. drive to the Mediterranean beaches near Perpignan, and 1 hour to the Spanish border with its favorable shopping streets. Behind house OMAN, you are suddenly in the „Pyrénées Catalanes‟ - one of Europe's largest nature parks. Downtown Vernetles-Bains (3 min. walk) restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and a genuine French market welcome you. Vernet-les-Bains and the beautiful routes around the village are awarded in the 'Guide Michelin'. In addition, the village offers various sports and recreation facilities, including in- and outdoor swimming pools with clean, hot water from the surrounding natural hot springs. Finally, the famous thermal bath and the nearby fashionable casino with its disco should not be forgotten. In years past, Vernet-les-Bains was noted for its spas. It was the “in” place to go for arthritic cures. For a great number of years, France subsidized the spas as a health treatment. In that day, Vernet-lesBains was a thriving community. Many famous names came there for treatment and seduced

writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Danish Hans Christian Andersen. Nowadays these cures (e.g. bronco-pulmonary and rheumatic affections) at the thermal bath is partly subsidized by the French Social Security system. Vernet-les-Bains is a wonderful quaint village, where you will feel at home due to storekeepers and restaurateurs generous hospitality. You will be pleasantly surprised to find a daily English or German newspaper available at the bookstore. An old church and castle, sitting on the hill in the middle of the town dominate the village. But be sure that one is acutely aware of the colors of the houses nestled under the red clay tile roofs. And you will enjoy the narrow winding steep streets - houses built on the edge of the street crowding one‟s senses as you wander through. Houses with wrought iron balconies, colorful shutters, and flowers cascading over the edge. Streets with children playing and dogs scampering on the steep slopes. Since 1992, Vernet-les-Bains has carried the title of “Village Arboretum”, and in June 2000 the village was awarded “Station Verte de Vacances” - green holiday village!

Activities
The area in and around Vernet-les-Bains is undisputed one of the best trekking areas in Europe, and the tracks start just behind Maison Oman. Seasoned hikers or families with children all will appreciate the softness yet wildness of the mountains or the countryside, natural and wonderful, on the various marked trails. As a starter, 10 minutes walk to Belvedere provides spectacular views; one hour from the village you have the waterfalls Cascades des Anglais; a 2-hour walk from Casteil and you can visit the famous living abbey of St. Martin du Canigou, (also reachable by car and 45 minutes walk). The long trek to our highest peak Mont Canigou (2784 meters/about 9,000 ft) takes about 6-7 hours each way, although you can reach the chalet at Cortalets (2150 meters altitude) by 4x4W jeep only, and walk the last two hours to the top!

Swimming/Bathing/Relaxation/Wellness
There are two natural hot springs public swimming pools in Vernet-les-Bains, one indoors for the winter season and one outdoor pool open during the summer. The Mediterranean beaches are about 45 min. away. The famous thermal bath (5 min. walk from „OMAN“) also has a natural hot water pool, and other recreational facilities like sauna, jacuzzi, hamam, and a small fitness center.
