“ Victory That Comes From Staying Chained To The Chariot”
Tape: E-65 E. Rome Time: 9 / 5 / 04 6 p.m. Text: 2 Corinthian 2: 12-17 ------------------------------------------------------------------Introduction: We are going to notice how any Christian can have a victorious life. No, The Victorious Life does not come from being exempted from problems. No, The Victorious Life does not come from us mastering our own life. We are going to notice that we can live the Victorious Life by staying chained to the chariot that will be explained in our message. First, we want to notice: I. The Means For Being A Victorious Christian A. Notice The Divine Person V.14 – Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.


Paul’s VICTORY didn’t depend upon his Co-laborer Titus, but Christ. According to V.13 Paul said-I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not TitusIn V.14 Paul said, thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ. Etc. NOTICE: Because our victory is in Christ we have permanent VICTORY. Paul said in V.14a – Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ. When our VICTORY is in CHRIST instead of people or circumstances we will ALWAYS triumph or have victory.

Even though Paul loved Titus, his victory was not in Titus, but in Christ. When our victory is in people are circumstances our victory can be altered because we cannot always depend on people or our plans, but we can always depend on Christ.

B. Notice The Descriptive Picture The phrase in V.14 –Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph ; Paul was using an analogy or picture of a Roman parade for a VICTORIOUS GENERAL. The Vivid Picture Or Analogy: In order for a soldier or GENERAL to earn a Roman Triumph Parade, he had to meet certain condition.  He must have been the actual commander in chief in the field.  Five thousand of the enemy at least must have fallen in one engagement.  The victory must have been won over a foreign foe and not in a civil war.  The Triumph or Victory Parade: The General would ride in his chariot with 4 white horses with his capture chained to the chariot.  The priests would swing censers with the sweet-smelling incense burning in them. Then they would have people carrying fresh cut flowers with the fragrance coming from them.  This is the picture Paul has in mind: Paul sees Christ marching in triumph through out the world, and he was in that conquering train being chained to the chariot.

2

 You see before you can be a spiritual conqueror; you must have been conquered your self. You must be chained to the chariot and letting your leader, the Lord Jesus Christ, do the leading in your life.  The VICTORY that we know in the Christian life comes to us through defeat.  Paul would never forget how it happened in his life. He was a PROUD, DETERMINED man, set in his enmity to the purpose of God as he traveled toward Damascus. But there in the dust of the Damascus road, he made s surrender of his life to the Lordship of Christ. God’s victory was total.  From that day forward, Paul would be led through life as the devoted CAPTIVE of Jesus Christ. Unlike the Roman general, Christ does not conquer men to destroy them, but rather to save them. When they become His captives, they began to share in His victory.

II. The Manifestation From Being A Victorious Christian


Etc. back to the Roman Triumph and the fragrance of the sweet incense that was burned in the triumph parade. The True Committed Christian, Spiritually chained to Christ will give off a spiritual fragrance in this world. We manifest Christ by our Fragrance or influence in this world.



A. Notice The Source For The Fragrance To Manifest Christ V.14 – Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor( or fragrance) of his knowledge by us in every place. The thing made known is the reality and wonder of knowing the Lord God.

3

When you have the relationship with God and have been made his personal CAPTIVE, the personal knowledge of Him that grows out of this experience gives off a sweet aroma. It just so affects the life that others will notice.
The Source Of The Fragrance to Manifest Christ

B. Notice The Spreading Of This Fragrance To Manifest Christ ( Notice two directions the fragrance will spread) 1. One Is Outward Our fragrance is for the Salvation of souls. a) Our Fragrance Will Be Rejected By Some V.15 – For we are unto God a sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. 16 – To the one we are the savor of death unto deathIn the Roman parade some of the prisoners would be put to death, so the fragrance that they smelled from the incense was the fragrance of death. MAIN APPLICATION: In this walk of life there are going to be some SINNERS that don’t want to have any thing to do with Christ and the FRAGRANCE or our INFLUENCE by our life style is rejected; in fact for some sinners our fragrance from our life style is repulsive to them which leads to death, the death of all deaths, spending eternity in HELL. Revelation 20:14: Speaks of the 2 nd death. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is called the 2nd death. b) Our Fragrance Will Be Received By Some

4

Just as our fragrance from our life style will be repulsive to some, it will be a sweet fragrance to some and that will cause them to want to give their life to Christ. Listen to V.16 again- To the one we are the savor of death to death: and to the other the savor (fragrance) of life unto life. Again, there will be some that will be drawn to Christ from the fragrance or influence that comes from our lives.
One Is Outward

2. One Is Upward Not only will our fragrance or our influence that comes from our lives effect lost people one way or another, it will always effect out Lord and Savior in an effective way. Notice V.15 again- For we are unto God a sweet savor ( fragrance) of ChristOur fragrance that comes from our lives because we stay chained to the chariot and allow our general,” the Lord Jesus Christ” to continually lead us gives off a sweet aroma to Christ.

C. Notice The Scope Of This Fragrance To Manifest Christ V.14 again – Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and make manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place. When we stayed chained to the chariot and allow the Lord to lead, we gain more knowledge of our Lord, which affects our lives, and people will be aware of it in every place.

5

In every place: That means our home, our work place, our neighborhood; people will be affected everywhere and in every place. GOOD: Not everyone will come to hear the proclamation of Christ, but Christ can take our fragrance lives” every place.”

III. The Motive For Being A Victorious Christian


V.17 – For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. Paul was simply saying, that he was preaching and serving God with the right motive. There were some in that day that was preaching and serving God with the wrong motive. Only when you serve God with the right motive can you live a victorious life. Only when you serve God with the right motive can you enjoy living for God. The reason that a lot of Christians are never happy is because their heart is not in what they are doing. The reason that Paul was able to praise God and be happy even when his plans were altered and things were not going the way he wanted them to was because he was serving God with the right motive and he was allowing his Lord to lead his life; he was staying chained to the chariot.
