“Sleeping with the Enemy” – 7/18/08 Harsh Asher GSB Class of ‘08 When I made the bold suggestion to our esteemed President of GSBIC and a good friend of mine, I actually did not realize that writing a column would be as tricky. A lot of crucial components make up the undertone of a well written column and me volunteering for one was nothing more than an outlet for creativity, which I have found lacking these days in my life after completing my MBA. Most of my professional life has had a much studied approach and I hate to use such a strong word, but monotony was inevitable just in terms of routine. Because of the freedom and lack or restrictions in terms of topics provided by Mr. President, I started viewing this column just like a personal blog with an already existing reader base. Blogging has been the new trend not just with the younger generation but with the previous ones too. I always enjoyed creative writing in the past but this was the first time I was being “initiated” as a writer and truth be told I am a little nervous with the reception. Straight away my mind started thinking of previously well written columns or blogs that I had read, to come up with a suitable idea for a topic or style. My favorite columnist, consistently over the years, has been Harsha Bhogle and in recent times Peter Roebuck.
Please let us know if there are specific activities you would like to see planned. We are always looking for new ideas! Let us know what you would like to do for fun!
Both of them have been part of the sports media – not surprising since the majority of articles I have read are related to sports or finance and economics. I have actually followed the former’s work for several years and have been added to Peter’s fan base just recently over the past 6 months. Amongst their work I found a few common themes – they made me look at a scenario in a way I would have never been able to (whether I agreed or disagreed), they talked about issues that we all think about but for some inexplicable reason only talk about it in our heads and lastly they immediately grabbed my attention. At the end of this column if I can do either of the three, I would consider it a successful debut. Ok I am not being completely honest – Mr. President and I were both hopeful that more people would be encouraged to start writing also and that would be the ultimate silver lining. After all we are blessed in our club by various backgrounds and yet we hardly know little of each other. Pondering over topics, I decided to discuss and explore something of current significance and relevance. One topic that grabbed my attention strongly was how different Cricket Governing bodies of several nations were split over continuing sporting ties with Zimbabwe due to its current political situation. Continued on pg. 3

Sleeping with the Enemy Keeping the international flavor in mind I debated about the strength of this subject but my doubts were cleared when I was actually surprised to hear a few of my close friends did not even know what was going on out there. Mom always said never to talk politics and religion over the dinner table so let me promptly clarify and stress utmost importance on this. By bringing up such a heavy topic of a nation’s political situation (especially considering that I am not even from a region that is remotely close), I am not writing this to hurt someone’s personal sentiment. This is just my take on the issue from the little research and knowledge I have so please don’t see this as an attempt to impair some background. Also I am certainly not writing this thinking I am doing my bit to bring world peace but merely hopeful this will raise some awareness. Who knows we might have a student soon from Zimbabwe and it would just pain me to think he would call us ignorant. At some point in the future, with the Olympics nearing us, I will talk about the boundaries between sports and politics but in this article I just want to dwell on the way forward for the people in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is in the grip of its worst humanitarian crisis since independence. Twenty years ago the country was hailed as an African success story and dubbed the "breadbasket" of southern Africa. Now its economy is in tatters and the World Food Programme estimates a third of the population faces food shortages. Zimbabwe now has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world (37 years) and one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates. With the economy in shreds, unemployment is running at an estimated 70 percent. Inflation is also rampant, standing at 164.3%.

Mugabe is an outspoken, controversial and polarizing figure. His relationship with the former colonial power, the United Kingdom, has been particularly contentious; he is characterized as a violent dictator in the British press, and he in turn denounces the British establishment as inveterate colonialists. His opponents were Movement of Democratic Change (MDC). It is common knowledge that the Movement of Democratic Change (MDC) party won the parliamentary and presidential elections earlier this year. Based on its performance, it would therefore be fair to say that the MDC would probably have also won last month’s presidential run-off had it not pulled out at the last moment due to a life threat on the candidate. Yet, despite these facts, Zanu-PF still remains in power today. Robert Mugabe has once again outmaneuvered his opponents in Zimbabwe and abroad. The people of Zimbabwe were denied their fundamental right to choose a leader of their own liking. What is the way forward? The first thing to say is that the two main parties in Zimbabwe have to accept that a political settlement is now pre-requisite to any lasting solution and must therefore renew their efforts to talk to each other. Second the negotiations will be tough and long due to contrasting styles. ZANU always was reliant on violence and MDC on diplomacy. Finally ZANU should accept that MDC is an indelible part of modern Zimbabwe just as MDC should not expect 100% diplomacy and no violence from ZANU. MDC leaders would be wise to be very “political” in an already highly politicized environment and come up with compromises to ensure there is less violence and bloodshed in the country. More than three million Zimbabweans now live overseas. Among the 11.7 million who are left, a growing number have been forced to leave their homes. Already high levels of politically motivated violence has occurred due to an outspoken approach harming the remaining citizens. Sleeping with the enemy this time will be the best solution for the people after all. Believe me - this won’t be first time in history of a country plagued with violence where this has occurred. Looking back at this article, I apologize for the length. It turned out a little lengthy than I had hoped. I don’t know about the frequency of my column but I hope to come up with something every issue based on your response. In either case next time you see me grabbing a drink at a local bar on a Saturday night please come up to me and tell me what you thought about it. For more formal feedback feel free to write at: feedbackforcolumn@gmail.com
How did Zimbabwe get into this situation? The most contentious of these is the government's land reform policies. In 2000, President Robert Mugabe (ZANU Party) rushed through a series of reforms aimed at giving black farmers access to good quality land. But critics of the reforms say the process was poorly managed and underfunded. They say the new owners lacked the necessary capital, infrastructure, equipment, seeds and fertilizers, and as a result were unable to farm effectively or at all. The ZANU PF government sees land redistribution as the final act in its black empowerment programme but has ended up as nothing but a vehicle for self-enrichment.

Recipe of the Month
Croque Madame Ingredient List:
5 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups whole milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 3 1/2 oz coarsely grated Gruyère cheese (1 1/3 cups) 8 slices firm white sandwich bread 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/2 lb thinly sliced cooked ham (preferably Black Forest) 4 large eggs
Preparation:
Make sauce: Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a 1- to 1 1/2-quart heavy saucepan over moderately low heat, then whisk in flour and cook roux, whisking, 3 minutes. Whisk in milk and bring to a boil, whisking constantly. Reduce heat and simmer, whisking occasionally, 5 minutes. Whisk in salt, pepper, nutmeg, and 1/3 cup cheese until cheese is melted. Remove from heat and cover surface directly with a sheet of wax paper. Make sandwiches: Spread 1 1/2 tablespoons sauce evenly over each of 4 slices of bread, then sprinkle evenly with remaining cheese (1/4 cup per slice). Spread mustard evenly on remaining 4 bread slices and top with ham, dividing it evenly, then invert onto cheese-topped bread to form sandwiches. Lightly oil a 15- by 10-inch shallow baking pan. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately low heat, then cook sandwiches, turning over once, until golden, 3 to 4 minutes total. Remove from heat and transfer sandwiches to baking pan, then wipe out skillet with paper towels. Preheat broiler. Top each sandwich with 1/3 cup sauce, spreading evenly. Broil sandwiches 4 to 5 inches from heat until sauce is bubbling and golden in spots, 2 to 3 minutes. Turn off broiler and transfer pan to lower third of oven to keep sandwiches warm. Heat remaining tablespoon butter in nonstick skillet over moderate heat until foam subsides, then crack eggs into skillet and season with salt and pepper. Fry eggs, covered, until whites are just set and yolks are still runny, about 3 minutes. Top each sandwich with a fried egg and serve immediately.

Joke of the Month
This duck walks into a convenience store and asks the clerk, "Do you have any grapes?" The clerk says no, and the duck leaves. The next day, the duck returns and asks, "Do you have any grapes?" The clerk again says no, and the duck leaves. The day after that, the duck walks in the store again and asks "Do you have any grapes?" The clerk screams at the duck, "You've come in here the past two days and asked if we had any grapes. I told you no every time that we don't have any grapes! I swear if you come back in here again, and ask for grapes, I'll nail your webbed feet to the floor!!" The duck left, and returned the next day. This time he asked, "Do you have any nails?" The clerk replied, "No," and the duck said, "Good! Got any grapes?"

MBA Olympics are back!
The second annual MBA Olympics will occur on October 4th Please mark 4th. your calendars now! The MBA Olympics started last year as a competitive/networking event for graduate students from Loyola, University of Chicago, DePaul, and Northwestern. Like last year, there will be similar events this year consisting of Softball, Kickball, Tug of War, Beanbag (cornhole), and a Relay race. In addition, there will be a networking event at Lucky Strike following the games. Loyola had an excellent performance last year, but unfortunately could not secure the Cup and lost in a tie breaker to UChicago. This year, I trust we will have just as much fun as last year and be a strong contender for the Cup. Signup sheet and further details will be announced by GSBA shortly.
