Ulster Cricketers Bowled Over With Success The University of Ulster’s Cricket Team have won the Irish Universities Cricket Association Indoor Intervarsity. The all-Ireland competition was hosted at Ulster’s Coleraine campus and the hosts didn’t disappoint the home crowd, beating Dublin Business School in the final. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from Northern Ireland and India made up the cross-campus team which was unbeaten on the run to the title. Keith Thompson, Sports Development Officer and Ulster’s Team Manager, said: “I am very proud of the team, who have worked hard to achieve what they have achieved. Eight universities from across Ireland competed and to win this is a great step for Ulster cricket. I would also like to thank all those who helped run the tournament. It was the first time that the University has hosted the competition and I’m glad is was a successful one.” University staff also got in on the action with Provost of the Coleraine campus Professor Alan Sharp volunteering to umpire the games alongside Professor of Politics Arthur Aughey, Professor of Environmental Studies David Eastwood, and Sports Services Development Manager Phil Carson. Dr Nigel Dobson, Co-Director of the Ulster Sports Academy, said: “The entire Academy would like to congratulate the team on their success. Not only was the tournament very successfully organised and run by all of the staff on the Coleraine campus, but to win the championship is just the icing on the cake of a fantastic event. The win show’s Ulster’s sporting prowess and the commitment to its vision of becoming the leading university for sport on the island of Ireland for.” The success of the cricket team comes after a successful few months for Ulster, with the University winning Irish Intervarsity trophies in Men’s Hockey, Men’s Volleyball and Men’s Golf.
