About David Halliday  Dip. Arts Drama  Television Operations Production Officer ABC TV (TOPO Level 3)
David Halliday began working during the rebirth of the Australian film industry in Sydney Australia in the 1970's, matching 35mm film negative for commercials at Supreme Films, and as a trained Oxberry optical effects printer at Colorfilm, Australia’s largest film laboratory at the time. He was on a small team that produced the title and special effects sequences for "Between Wars", "The Cars That Ate Paris", "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "The Inn of The Damned", “Caddie", and other feature films and television programs; and pack shots for the end of commercials. Clients included Peter Weir, Michael Thornhill, Phillip Noyce and Anthony Buckley, but he mostly worked with renowned feature editors such as Max Lemmon. David’s passion for the craft of editing led him to become an editing assistant and eventually editor at ABC TV’s Documentary Unit at Gore Hill in Sydney, assisting well-known high profile editors. He was an active member of FEGA (Film Editors Guild of Australia), and studied Film & TV Production Techniques (Editing) at North Sydney Technical College under master drama editor Ray Alchin. In 1980 he graduated with his Dip. Arts (Drama). In the 80’s he spent a further ten years as documentary and current affairs editor for ABC TV. There he sat for the national film examination as part of his own assessment, and received the highest grade of all Australian ABC Film Department employees (93%). In 1987 he graduated as Television Production Officer (TOPO Level 4, Senior Editor), and consequently performed casual duties as Field Training Officer (Film Editing) for ABC TV Training, Acting Shift Senior for ABC News and Public Affairs, and Acting Senior Film Officer. He left in 1987 to explore the freelance world that presented other forms of editing, from shorts to feature films. David was Head of Editing at the Warner Bros. Studios, Gold Coast Australia for two years in 1989-90, under UK producer Stanley O’Toole (“The Boys from Brazil”, “Nijinsky”). David’s 35mm film editing credits at WB included “Bloodmoon” (starring Leon Lissek), “Dead Sleep” (starring Linda Blair), and as postproduction staff supervisor on “Hurricane Smith” (starring Carl Weathers), working closely with people such as film music composer Brian May, and UK director Alec Mills (DOP “Return of the Jedi”).

Now with drama and documentary as his passion, in the 90’s David became interested in the exciting things that were happening with computerised editing technology. In 1992 he edited two episodes of the “Under the Skin” series for SBS TV under producers Franco di Chiera and Barbara Mariotti using an early computer editing system. In 1993, he cut “Treasure: the Gulf of Thailand Incident” for Arts & Entertainment Network, New York. He was one of the first Avid® operators in Australia in 1994, working with Digital Video Productions, producing content for the first digital CD-Interactive discs (later to develop into DVD). From 1997 he has edited TV documentaries for ABC, SBS and Seven networks, produced by Mark Chapman. He has taught an annual Digital Post-Production elective for Bond University since 1998. Since 2002 David has edited films for (Visionquest Entertainment International), and John Young Wildlife Enterprises, in High Definition for international cable television networks. David is a guest editor for “Australian Story” (ABC TV). David operates his own Avid® editing system and creates an atmosphere in the cutting room that is playfully creative with due consideration to efficient use of precious time. David says “I believe that since the turn of this century, digital editing has come of age, and the editor now has the creative tools s/he always dreamed about.”
