InterCity East Coast Franchise
You might have seen that trains come in a lot of different
colours. This is because they are run by different people.
The different areas where people run the trains are called
A franchise allows someone to run the trains in those
areas for a number of years.
When a franchise is coming to an end, the Government
thinks about what changes can be made to make the
trains and stations in that area better.
It writes these things down and asks the people who live
in the area what they think and if they have any ideas.
These things are then put into the new franchise and
anyone who is thinking about running the trains in that
area will need to make sure they do them.
A new franchise
The intercity East Coast franchise covers trains running
from England to Scotland through Yorkshire.
This is currently run by a company called East Coast, its’
trains are mostly coloured white with pink lettering.
The new franchise will allow someone to run the trains for
at least 10 years.
If they do a good job and we want them to, they might be
able to run the trains for another 5 years but the franchise
would end after that.
What do we want to do?
We want to make the trains and stations on this route
To do this, we need to make some changes to the way the
trains are run and how the stations look.
The changes mean that it might sometimes be more
difficult for people to use the trains and stations, or that it
might be easier to get on and off trains.
We have worked closely with Passenger Focus (who
protect the needs of people who travel on trains) to make
sure that we know what people think about the service.
We want to know what you think about our plans.
Is there anything else we should include?
Is there anything we could do that you think would make
travelling better for you?
Not everything about our plans is covered here.
You can read all about our plans, including some
examples of how our plans might work on our web site at
Our plans are also available in hard copy or in an audio
format. If you would like to talk to us about our plans
please call us on 0207 944 8300.
We need to know what you think by 19 April 2010.

What happens next?
Once we know what you think, we will look at our plans
and see if we need to make any changes.
We will then ask people if they might like to run trains and
stations in this area.
If they do, they will need to show us that they can run the
trains and stations properly and how they will make sure
that our plans are introduced.
