To Whom It May Concern: The Connecticut Professional Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE-CT) was formed by a group of motivated professionals from various UTC divisions in 1996. SHPE-CT is a non-profit organization, which partners with corporations to help continue with our mission and fulfill on our initiatives. We are focused in the development of student chapters at the local universities, providing personal and professional development for our members, building relations with other Connecticut community and professional organizations and most importantly, reaching out to the community to create awareness in education, engineering, math, science and the technical fields. For our work in both the servicing the Latino community and providing professional development, SHPE-CT has been recognized and awarded for our efforts: ► ► ► ► “The Adelante Professional Chapter of the Year Award” in 2007 from SHPE National “2006 Professional Chapter of the Year Award” in September 2007 at SHPE’s Eastern Technical Career Conference (ETTC). “Community Organization of the Year Award” in 2005 from the Connecticut Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s (NSHMBA’s) Destino Awards. “The Adelante Professional Chapter of the Year Award” in 2001 from SHPE National (the highest honor bestowed by our National organization) at the National Technical and Career Conference (NTCC). SHPECT has received the honor of “The Adelante Professional Development Award” in three past national conferences.

www.shpect.org SHPE National - Overview Founded in 1974, the Society of Hispanic Engineers, Inc., (SHPE) is a national non-for profit organization that promotes Hispanic in engineering, math and science. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. SHPE continues to expand at an aggressive pace and currently includes over 7,750 members affiliated with 49 professional chapters and 240 student chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico.

SHPE National - Goals Education Promote educational opportunities for professionals, college and K-12 students. Promote fundraising for scholarships. Develop internship agreements with government and corporate entities. Professional Development Establish a training program to enhance leadership skill development. Provide seminars on professional growth and career development. Promote awareness of job opportunities and career guidance. Gather and publicize information on Hispanic entrepreneurship and business enterprises. Community Outreach Sponsor a variety of community events designed to increase community, parental, and student involvement in engineering, math and science. Promote involvement in public issues of interest to the engineering, math and science community. Encourage interaction with other Hispanic, technical and minority organizations. Organizational Development Enhance pride and excellence within the organization through the promotion of high ethical standards, empowerment of our members, professional achievement, cultural diversity and continuous selfimprovement. www.shpect.org SHPE – Connecticut Chapter SHPE is comprised of 8 regions; the Connecticut chapter is a part of region IV, which also includes Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington DC, Virginia, and Puerto Rico. The local chapter here in the state of Connecticut was established in 1996. This organization is composed of a very dynamic group of individuals. Role Models to the Community Quest 2007 – Encourage higher learning & increase educational opportunities. Melanie Rosado Scholarship Bowl – Fundraise to support the scholarship for students who achieve high academic standards at Bulkeley High School. Annual Christmas Party Toy Drive - Collect books & toys to be given to SAMA, Casa Otoñal, & Hartford Learning Academy Develop mentoring outreach program with Hartford High geared towards juniors, focused on graduate education with an emphasis on careers in engineering, math and science. Continue working with our SHPE Jr. chapter and establish more SHPE Jr. chapters at local high schools. As a result of these initiatives, our chapter has been able to develop student chapters at the University of Connecticut University of New Haven, University of Rhode Island and Brown University. As part of the community service initiative, members participated in Habitat for Humanity, the March of Dimes, Relay for Life and Engineer’s Week activities at Bloomfield High School and Hartford Public High School. SHPE-CT also partook in a toy drive in conjunction with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, and The Pratt and Whitney Hispanic Leadership. For our members, SHPE-CT has provided professional activities which include workshops on trends in Ecommerce, how to negotiation for success, time management, heath and fitness and personal finance. We also provided fun activities for personal development such as salsa lessons or finding your way out of a corn maze or lectures on the development of dialects of the Spanish language and many more. SHPE-CT membership is growing at a rapid rate and it has become imperative that we have the support of corporations in Connecticut such as yours to continue providing the level of quality service to our members and community.
