Choose the one that best complete the sentence, then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One My friend, Herbert, has always been fat so that he decided to go on a diet. He began his diet a week ago. First he wrote out a long list of all the foods which were forbidden. The list included most of the things Herbert loves: butter, rice, beer, milk, chocolate and sweets.
2

Yesterday I paid him a visit. I rang the bell and I was not surprised to see that Herbert was still as fat as ever. He led me into t he room and hurriedly hid a large bag under his table. It was clear that he was embarrassed. When I asked him what he was doing, he smiled and then put the bag on his table. He explained that his diet was so strict that he had to reward himself. Then he showed me the things in the bag. They were five bars of chocolates and three bags of sweets. 26. Why did Herbert decide to go on a diet? Because _____. A) his friend gave him some advice B) he wanted to be a tall man C) he didn’t like to eat anything D) he didn’t want to be too fat 27. From the list written by Herbert, we learn that _____. Why did Herbert hurriedly hide the bag under the table? A) Because the doctor would not let him do that. B) Because his parents would stop him eating these things. A) and he really did so B) but he didn’t do that C) so did his friend D) and he asked his friend to help him Passage Two In sports, the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than man. That at least is what people say. Women are called the ―weaker sex‖, or if men want to please them, ―the fair sex‖. But boys and girls are taught together at school and universities. There are women who are famous prime ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really weaker? The fastest men can run a mile within 4 minutes, the best women 4.5 minutes. Women’s times are always slower than men’s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are girls. One of them swam 400 meters in 4
3

minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first ―Tarzan(泰山)‖ in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weiss Muller. His fastest 400 meters was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are separated sexes. 31. Women are called ―the weaker sex‖ because _____. A) in sports the two sexes are always separate B) people usually think so C) women are less strong than men D) men want to please women 32. The writer of this passage is trying to prove that _____. A) men are stronger sex B) women are stronger sex C) women are weaker sex D) women are not weaker sex 33. The writer implies that _____. A) women are weaker than men, but faster B) women are catching men up now C) women are weaker than men, but live longer D) men are not always stronger and faster than women 34. Which of the following is true? A) Johnny Weiss Muller swam slower than a girl in a swimming race. B) A girl 50 years later swam faster than Johnny Weiss Muller. C) The fastest swimmers are usually girls. D) The fastest women can run as fast as the best men. 35. What problem does sport have? A) Some women are actually men. B) Sport is becoming too serious. C) Sportsmen are given hormone injections. D) Women and men are separate in sports. Passage Three My sister and I had fine dreams of a home in the city, but when the Alcott family found itself in a small house at the South end with not a tree in sight, only a back yard to play in, and no money to buy any of the good things before us, we children all rebelled and longed for the country again. Anna soon found little pupils, and walked heavily away each morning to her job, pausing at the corner to wave her hand to me in answer to my salute with the duster. My father went to his classes at his room downtown, mother to her all-absorbing poor, the little girls to school, and I, Louisa, was left to keep house, feeling like a caged

seagull as I washed dishes and cooked in the kitchen. Father brought news from the upper world. Mother, usually in old and poor clothing because she would give away her clothes, brought sad tales of suffering and sin from the darker side of life. Gentle Anna would modestly talk about her success as a teacher, for even at seventeen her sweet nature won all who knew her. My reports were usually a mixture of the tragic and the comic, and the children poured their small joys and sorrows into the family where comfort and sympathy were always to be found. 36. Passage One A man stayed in his house as a flood engulfed his town. Two men in a rowboat came to his house and offered to take him to safety. ―No, thank you,‖ said the man, ―God will help me.‖ As the waters rose, the man retreated to the second storey of his house. Now, two men in a motorboat came by and offered to rescue him. Again, the man declined, saying, ―No, thank you. God will help me.‖
9

As the waters rose still higher, the man retreated again to the rooftop of his house. A helicopter came by, and someone inside it threw down a rope, urging the man to grab it and he pulled up into the helicopter. Once more, the man declined and said, ―No, thank you. A) very faithful B) very stupid C) helpless D) useless Passage Two If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that one’s memory works in the same way. When someone says he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chances to become strong. The position of the two people is that one of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair all day. If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, while few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extraordinarily strong or clever, but all of us can improve our strength and our memory by the same means—practice. Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot
10

read or write have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a notebook. They have to remember dates, times, prices, names and stories; so their memory is the whole time exercised. So if you want a good memory, just practice remembering. 31. The main idea of this passage is that _____. A) practicing memory can improve your memory B) if you want to have strong arms and legs, just exercise them C) all of us can become extraordinarily clever by practicing remembering D) exercising the brain is the same as exercising the arms and legs 32. If a man tells you that he has a poor memory, _____. A) he is just unlucky B) it is his parents’ fault C) it is his own fault D) his arms and legs must be weak, too 33. When a man tells you that he has a strong memory, this means _____. A) his parents’ memory must be strong too B) he keeps on exercising his brain regularly C) he regularly exercises his arms and legs D) he has enough chances to become strong 34. All of us can _____ through practice. A) become extraordinarily strong B) become extraordinarily clever C) become both strong and clever D) have a better memory 35. People who can’t read or write _____. A) are cleverer than those who can B) can remember things better than those who can C) are more foolish than those who can D) have poorer memory than those who can Passage Three Most dogs’ owners feel that their dogs are their best friends. One of my friends has a large German shepherd named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a long walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much. some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A), B), C) and D). Choose the one that best complete the sentence, then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One We have just climbed out of a spaceship onto the surface of the moon. Behind us is the ship, half in sunlight and half in deep shadow. A few miles ahead is a wall of mountains towering against the blue sky. Moreover, there, as if resting on the mountains, is a great ball of light, beautifully colored in blue, green and brown with a
16

patch of dazzling white at the top. It is our own far away world—the earth. We take a step and rise like jumper-up, float and come down again. Hopping carefully, we looked over the valley and the plain. Not a sound can be heard because there is no air to carry sound, and wind; there are no smells, no plants, and no animals. There is nothing but rock and dust, blinding sunlight and cold black shadows. 26. The passage is written as if _____. A) blinding sunlight B) valley and plains C) rock and dust D) plants and animals Passage Two We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. ―Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?‖ ―When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?‖ ―And Paul, why didn’t I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?‖ When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, ―You’re a lucky dog.‖ Is he really on your side? If he says, ―You’re a lucky guy‖ or ―You’re a lucky girl‖, that’s friendly. But ―lucky
17

dog‖? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the ―dog‖ bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck. ―Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for‖ is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? How about his posture and the look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake. 31. In paragraph 1, the writer recalls some things that happened between him and his friends. He _____. A) feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him B) feels he may not have ―read‖ his friends’ true feelings correctly C) thinks it was a mistake to have broken you up with his girl friend D) is sorry that his friends let him down 32. In paragraph 2, the writer talks about someone saying, ―You’re a lucky dog,‖ he is saying that _____. A) sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words B) the speaker is just being friendly C) the word ―dog‖ shouldn’t be used to apply to people D) this saying means the same as ―You’re a lucky guy‖ or ―You’re a lucky girl‖ 33. The main purpose of this passage is to tell us how to _____. A) avoid mistakes about money and friends B) size up people C) avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you D) keep people friendly without trusting them 34. The underlined phrase ―square with‖ in the last paragraph probably means _____. A) to talk with B) to listen to C) to agree with D) to deal with 35. A) misunderstand what people say B) be fortunate enough to have a date on Saturday evenings C) be able to avoid making mistakes about money D) be careful to weigh what people say to determine their real meaning

Passage Three Do people in your country hug and kiss on the street? In some countries it is common for people to show affection in public places. In the United States, for example, we often see couples (two people) hold hands, ―make out‖ or ―neck‖ on the street, in the park, in restaurants, and even on trains and buses! But in some other countries, people never show affection in public places because their customs don’t permit this. For example, in Korea and Mainland China, custom forbids people to display affection in public places. So, when Korean and Mainland Chinese people visit the United States, they sometimes feel very surprised and even shocked when they see Americans hug and kiss on the street because their own cultures don’t allow such conduct. In some countries, friends show physical affection to each other. In some south American countries, female friends walk arm in arm when they walk along the street together. In Italy and Russia, male friends often kiss each other on both cheeks when they greet. In most cultures, men don’t kiss or hug when they greet one another. They usually shake hands or pat each other on the back. People around the world are different in the amount, manner, and situations in which they touch each other. 36. However, one month, six months, or even one year later, some people have different feelings. There are many new things that are hard to understand and accept in another country. People live in a new culture have to eat new kinds of food, learn a new language, and live in their daily lives far away from their families and friends. At this time, people cry more and feel more sadly. They shed tears because they feel very homesick. They feel down in the dumps because it seems nobody understands them. Some newcomers burst into tears when they talk about or even think about their families. Sometimes, on special holidays, they might not even be comforted. They are heartbroken because they are so far away from everything that is familiar and comfortable. This time of being in low spirits doesn’t last forever. Eventually, newcomers start to adjust and to feel more contended with their new lives. People start to smile more and chuckle at jokes. They feel more optimistic and more accepting of their new life and the changes they have experienced. Newcomers won’t ever feel life they are walking on air every day, but they will feel more pleased about their new lives. It takes time to make this adjustment.
