What are Elementary Summer Activity courses?
Summer Activity courses provide fun, challenging, and exciting learning opportunities, which capitalize on the different “intelligences” of children. These courses are offered to any elementary student (K-5) in the district. Instructors are certified teachers within the Bernards Township school system. • All courses are held between 10:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. at Mount Prospect School, 111 Hansom Road, Basking Ridge. Each course runs Monday through Thursday, an hour a day for two weeks and includes eight classes. The meeting times for each session are as follows: Session 1: Week 1: Monday, July 6th - Thursday July 9th Week 2: Monday, July 13th – Thursday July 16th Session 2: Week 1: Monday, July 20th through Thursday, July 23rd Week 2: Monday, July 27th through Thursday, July 30th • Please use your child’s current grade when registering for classes; a student now in kindergarten may enroll in a kindergarten class. Lunch Break- In order to accommodate students who attend morning recreation programs or have a full schedule of summer activity classes, a break will be provided from 12:45-1:15 for students to have a snack/lunch. If your child will be attending the program during this time, please send your child with a small snack as part of his/her daily routine. Tuition is $110 per student for each eight-day course. Checks should be made payable to the “Bernards Township Board of Education”. PLEASE ISSUE A SEPARATE CHECK FOR EACH COURSE IN WHICH YOUR CHILD IS ENROLLED. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and will close once a course is filled. Therefore, please send in your registration right away. You may select as many as four courses in Session 1 and four courses in Session 2 for a total of eight summer classes.

It is important to select alternate(s) for each course, especially if you are interested in registering your child for a full day of scheduling (10:45-3:15). All first choices will be honored as long as the courses have openings. Please send your registration forms and checks in an envelope marked “Summer Activities Program” to your child’s teacher. Confirmations will be sent home via e-mail beginning the week of 5/25/09 The Summer Activities Program strives to maintain a ratio of 10-15 students per teacher. Students should behave in an appropriate manner. School rules of conduct apply to summer programs. Any student who violates the rules may be removed from the program. Please discuss this with your child. Please be considerate of our staff and pick up your child no later than 10 minutes after scheduled dismissal time.

Course Guide
A Pirate’s Life for Me Grades K-2
Do you love Captain Hook? Is Pirates of the Caribbean your favorite movie? Then climb aboard matey and join us for pirate crafts and more! Create your own treasure chest to keep your treasures in, make a pirate hat, your own treasure map, listen to pirate stories, play some pirate games, and much more!

African Safari

Grades K-3

Get your passport and bags ready as we travel to East Africa. Each day we will learn about the wild animals that we encounter on our African safari and learn to speak a little Swahili, too! You will need your binoculars, as we are sure to spot the punda milia (zebra), twiga (giraffe), tembo (elephant), kifaru (rhinoceros), kiboko (hippopotamus), simba (lion) and more! Join us for an amazing trip through Africa.

Basketball: Drive, Shoot, Score!

Grades 2-5

Do you love the game of basketball? Learn the fundamentals, harness your skills, learn new drills you can do on your own, and play three-on-three games each day. We will focus on ball handling, shooting, rebounding, defense, and improving our “basketball I.Q.” Come drive, shoot and score!

Bedroom Décor and More!

Grades K-5

If you loved Funky-Fashions but need to expand your flair for fashion, or are a little more mature, this is the class for you. You will bedazzle your bedroom and fill it with pizzazz. We will be making tie-dye pillowcases, potpourri sachets, jewelry organizers, picture frames, dream catchers, bulletin boards, desk accessories, door décor, journals and personalized notepaper. Be ready to show off your bedroom makeover at your next sleepover. Come and join the fun to make your room a dream come true!

Book Cooks

Grades 1-5

Join your friends to make edible dirt, inchworms, butterflies, and even cherry pie! Each class will start with a story and end with a book related tasty treat! It is arts and crafts with a twist… you get to eat the project! New and improved for 2009!

Cartooning & Drawing

Grades 2-5

Learn to be a cartoonist with step-by-step instructions, entertaining exercises and plenty of encouragement. Create a cartoon character and fill its world with vivid scenery, exciting activities and a wacky supporting cast. Anyone with a pencil, paper, and desire can become a good cartoonist; all it takes is imagination!

Cooking Around the World

Grades 1-5

Are you curious about other cultures? Do you like to cook? Would you like to try recipes from around the world? If you would like to learn how to make and taste dishes from Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Israel, Egypt, Southern Asia and East Asia, then this is the course for you. All students will take home recipes for each dish so that they can cook these tasty treats for their families!

Chess Club

Grades 2-5

Beginning students will be introduced to the basic rules and strategies of chess and develop their problem solving skills. Intermediate and advanced players will explore the use of expert strategies. Students will be grouped based on their level of playing and will have an opportunity to move into a more advanced group if necessary. (Please indicate your child’s level of playing on the registration form.) This class will culminate in a voluntary chess tournament.

Chocolate Touch

Grades 1-4

If you have read the story, “Chocolate Touch”, you know that it is about a student who loves chocolate. Everything he touches turns to chocolate. In this class, we will finger paint with chocolate pudding, make drawings using cocoa powder and chocolate chips, bake (of course), and sample delicious chocolate. The children will design chocolate creations and reinforce their math measuring skills as they follow recipes. We may even read a story or two that involves food. Yum, yum!

Clay, Clay, Clay

Grades K-5

If you like to work with your hands, this is the course for you. Learn how to make pots, a mask, a piñata, and animals out of Mexican quick-dry clay. Each day we will either be creating our pieces or painting them. During our last class, we will even make our own clay, which you can take home with you. Recipes for clay-making will be provided. Please bring a smock, apron or old shirt to use as a cover-up for your clothes. We will be having a great time and getting messy!

Colonial Crafts

Grades 2-5

Students will participate in colonial craft workshops and learn how to make original stencil designs to create cards and decorations. They will also create pomanders with lemons and cloves and colonial cornhusk dolls. Students will prepare an authentic dish using a recipe from one of the thirteen colonies. Finally, students will experience the art of candle making by creating small, hand-dipped candles.

Creative Card Making

Grades 2-5

Come learn some hands-on ways to make memorable and beautiful greeting cards that can be given away to others or simply treasured for yourself. We will use various types of colorful and creative materials as well as real scrapbooking tools. Your family and friends will wonder… “How did you make that?” Students will leave each day with a wonderful creation.

Culinary Kids II

Grades K-5

Back by popular demand, you be the chef! Students will explore the ins and outs of cooking using Rachel Ray’s 30-Minute Easy to Make Kid Recipes, Emeril’s There’s A Chef in My Family, Better Homes and Gardens New Junior Cookbook and many other cook books. We will learn how to measure, slice, dice, mash and mix. Students will create meals such as Quesadilla Pizza, Mighty Melts, Fast Fixin’ Fajitas, Dressed Up Veggies, Big Top Brownies and much more. Once you get the hang of it the sky is the limit on the delicious dishes you can create. Students will sample the dishes in class, and share the recipes with their families! New recipes for 2009!

Dynamite Dominoes

Grades K-2

Dominoes are fun to count and add and stand up to knock down! Take this course and you will have fun sorting dominoes to make Venn Diagrams and playing a game called “Domino Dash”. We will complete patterns to make “domino paths” while you use your computational skills to arrange multiple addends and apply mental math skills. We will sort and classify dominoes in other ways through games like “Let’s Graph” and “Who Am I”. This class will be dynamite!

Drama Kids

Grades 2-5

This class is loads of fun for energetic, enthusiastic, dramatic kids! We will learn about different types of theatre such as monologues, skits and plays. Students will develop their imagination, selfconfidence, personal expression, and public speaking skills while learning all about drama. At the end of the course students will perform a short play. If you love to act, or just want to learn how, this is the course for you!

Elementary Engineering

Grades K-5

Are you ready to build an amusement park that will include a Ferris wheel and a speed coaster? Come join the fun as we use building tools such as K’NEX, Legos and Lincoln Logs. We will also enjoy eating popcorn, funnel cake, ices and cotton candy as we make these incredible creations. “So boys and girls, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!!!”

Experiencing Great Artists

Grades K-5

Come imitate the great masters of long ago! This is a fun and creative course where you will learn art history while you create beautiful masterpieces of your own. Students will be introduced to great artists such as Michelangelo, Van Gogh, and Leonardo da Vinci. Students will “travel” throughout the world and over the centuries to view many colorful pieces of artwork created by these masters. The best part will be creating your own masterpieces in the style of the masters! 8

Fairy Tale Magic

Grades K-3

Do you love fairy tales? If so, then this class is for you. Students will listen to some of their favorite enchanted tales such as Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and many more! A craft related to each story will follow. So come join the magical fun and see where your imagination takes you!

Fashion Illustration

Grades 3-5

Learn how to illustrate like a fashion designer. We will explore how to draw details of clothing and accessories. We will research current styles in the fashion industry and create our own designs. Students will develop a portfolio of ideas and mood boards, and use real fashion forecast resources to look into the fashion future! If interested, this course is appropriate taken along with Project Runway!

Food Fun

Grades 2-5

Do you like to cook? Would you like to learn? Come to this fantastic course that will teach you different kid-friendly recipes, many that don’t require cooking! We will be learning about food and making some fantastic recipes, including edible art such as Double Decker-Delights, “Fishy” Sandwiches, Candy Pizza, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirls! Best of all, you will get to eat your projects!

Fun with Italian

Grades K-5

Have fun with Italian! Students will learn the basics of Italian through crafts and games. This includes learning colors, numbers, body parts, the Italian alphabet, and basic expressions. We will make spaghetti and meatballs with clay, design our own Italian flags, play Bingo and Simon Says and create our own color by number books. Students will read “The Three Little Pigs” in Italian and listen to Italian music!

Fun with Jewelry

Grades 1-4

Do you like to wear jewelry? Have you ever thought about making your own? If so, this class is for you! We will be working with a variety of materials to make our own necklaces, bracelets, earring and pins. Come and learn techniques for beading, working with embroidery floss and much more!

Funky Fashions Summertime Edition

Grades K-5

Don’t be afraid to make a splash. Dive in and make some summer Funky Fashions and Trendy Treasures. Your friends will go crazy trying to figure out where you bought those awesome accessories. Students will make and design jewelry, hair ties, summer apparel such as Hawaiian accessories and beach wear, and even fabulous flip-flops. So come join the summertime fashion craze and sign up for this course. The last day of class the students will be hitting the runway to show off their apparel at our Luau celebration. New and improved for 2009!

Glamour Girls

Grades K-3

Are you into the latest fashions and accessories? Then come be a “Glamour Girl!” In this course, students will love designing and creating their own jewelry, accessories and more! We will be designing bracelets, necklaces, key chains, and even cool pens! Students will have fun using colorful beading, fabrics, and even clay! If you like to be beautifully accessorized then this is the course for you!

HyperStudio

Grades 3-5

Computer technicians wanted! Create and design slides using the computer program Hyperstudio. Students will create a kid friendly power point presentation on a topic of their choice using this program. Students will explore the use of drawing tools, text, clip art, animation and the Internet during this course. Come and improve your computer skills and have fun at the same time!

Improvisation

Grades 2-5

Do you enjoy laughing? Making others laugh? If so, this class is the place for you. Improvisation is the skill of performing without any preparation or writing to prompt you. During this course we will play improvisational games that will help develop your acting ability, improve your public speaking skills and teach you how to be creative on the spot. At the end of this class all parents will be invited to see how imaginative you can be! Be prepared to be silly and have tons of fun while learning the art of improv.

International Crafts and Games

Grades K-4

Are you ready to take a trip around the world but never leave school grounds? Learn about the culture of other places and take home souvenirs from your trip. We will create projects such as African drums, Australian boomerangs, Japanese fish and Peruvian dance capes, to name a few. Activities from around the world will include traditional games from the Czech Republic, the Philippines, Australia and Italy. Experience the excitement of going abroad right in your own backyard and be able to share your international travels with your parents. This class is your passport to an enlightening adventure!

Kids Can Draw

Grades K-2

Do you often wish you were better at drawing? Well now you can become an artist! Students will learn how to draw different types of animals and objects, step-by-step. All you need is inspiration, a few lessons, and you can create wonderful drawings! You will even develop your very own portfolio, just like a professional! Join this class as we begin a summer adventure in the art studio!

Let’s Play Cards

Grades K-5

Playing cards can improve strategic thinking, computation skills, give students practice in cooperating, and just be plain old fun! Students are going to sit back, relax and have loads of fun playing new and old card games together. Card games will include War, Go Fish, Spit, Rummy and other new games. Students will be encouraged to share any games they know with classmates as well. So come and learn some new card games to impress your family and friends or just have some good old-fashioned fun playing some old favorites!

Math Art

Grades K-3

Do you like creating artistic designs? Then come enhance and express your artistic talents by using mathematics to create art! Join fellow artists and mathematicians as we make colorful and creative projects while exploring mathematical concepts. Express yourself artistically with symmetry prints, magic folding cubes, tessellation designs, geometry sculptures, and many more artistic projects.

Mighty Mathematicians

Grades K-2

In this “tasty” course you will make patterns, graphs, and geometric shapes using fun foods such as M & M’s, Twizzlers, marshmallows and Teddy Grahams. Students will add, subtract, and make designs and patterns with raisins and fruit. Each lesson comes with a story that correlates with its mathematical skill. So be a mighty mathematician and join this class!

Musical Theatre

Grades K-5

Back by popular demand! This class is for all students who enjoy acting, singing, dancing or even the behind-the-scenes work of music theatre such as costume design, choreography, lighting, sound and directing. In this course, we will work mainly on the performance side of theater while we sing, act and dance. We will also design our own costumes to match a character in a designated time period. Some students may even take on the role of the director or choreographer. We will end our class with an “open rehearsal/short performance” to show our families what we have been learning! New material for 2009.

Newspaper Club

Grades 2-5

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Come and learn all about newspapers and what it takes to be a part of one. We will learn all about what goes into putting a newspaper together as well as how to write a newspaper article. Students will put together one to two editions of a newspaper that will be distributed to all the students in the summer activities program. Don’t be left out- join us and be a part of the second annual Summer Activities Newspaper!

Nuts about Nutrition

Grades K-4

Come join the five-food group royal family for some fun learning. You will be introduced to Sir Milkford, King Henry, Princess Peapod and many others who will teach you the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. All the activities will develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while learning about the Food Pyramid. We will also have healthy snacks that focus on each food group.

Old Book, New Book, All About You Book

Grades 2-5

Have you ever wondered what to do with the old books that you don't read anymore? Well, now you can use a book from home to create an 'altered book', which tells a story all about YOU! Students will each use one old book that they will cut, tear, glue, paint, decorate, and re-build to create a NEW book all about them. There will be paint, stickers, glue, and plenty of fun to be found, so if you love books, and you want to learn more about how to turn them into a work of art, this class is for you!

Old Time Activities & Games

Grades K-3

Step back into the past of the lazy days of summer. Learn to do the Cat’s Cradle, make lanyards, weave potholders, create bubble wands and homemade bubbles, and ribbon dancers. Students will learn hand-jive songs, jump rope rhymes, Chinese Jump Rope, hopscotch, jacks, marbles, pick-up sticks and many other great activities. Make your summer fun by joining us for some of these oldtime crafts and games that your parents played during their days on the playground. This class will be full of exciting activities that you will remember for a lifetime!!

Party Like A Princess

Grades K-2

This is your royal invitation to PARTY LIKE A PRINCESS! If you are a modern Cinderella with a wish to create enchanting crafts with a princess theme come join us. Students will make princess tiaras, crown jewels boxes, magic wish wands, fairy dust, pretty as a princess picture frames and lots more. So don’t be a reluctant royal, join us for some summer fun!

Photography

Grades 2-5

Do you love photographs and enjoy taking pictures? If so, this class is for you. Students will receive cameras and film, be given a photographic assignment and take photographs both in school and out. Students will learn about composition and how to take dynamic photographs. The photographs will be mounted into a creative, collaged hand-made book. If you are ready to use your imagination and become a better photographer, you will love this course! New and improved for 2009!

Project Runway

Grades 2-5

Explore the wonderful world of Fashion through the eyes of a designer! Participate in funky concept projects each week by learning how to create fashion sketches, sewing, accessorizing and styling your designs. Some of the projects include re-designing an oversized tee shirt into a fashion fabulous creation, and creating your own handbag! The final days of the mini unit will be preparing for an exciting runway show. It will be SEW much fun! 12

Rocketry

Grades 2-5

Have you ever wondered how an airplane works or how rockets get into outer space? Do you like making things and seeing how they work? If so, this aerospace engineering class may be the one for you. In this class students will learn how Newton’s laws of motion are used to help overcome the forces of gravity and explore why rockets are useful in society. Students will make a series of paper airplanes and test them outside as well as make and paint their own rockets. Finally, during our rocket launch, all the rocket scientists will watch their creations soar up to 500 feet into the air!

Science + Math = Fitness Fun!

Grades K-5

On your mark, get set, go!!! Let’s calculate, estimate and experiment. This class will engage students in science and math skills while utilizing physical activities. Bring your sneakers and thinking caps as we play estimation activities, Frisbee golf, create bouncy balls and challenge our mind and body to hours of fun and many more activities!

Science Olympics

Grades 2-5

Here is the chance to participate in a competitive challenge that demonstrates the fun side of science. The Science Olympics is a series of events related to a wide range of science topics. Teams will use science skills and ideas to develop creative solutions to problems such as; how can I make a bridge out of a newspaper? How many marbles can I put in an aluminum foil boat before it sinks? How can I make a straw tower strong enough to hold a tennis ball? Test your solutions, compete with your friends, and go for the gold!

Scrapbooking Mania

Grades 1-5

Think back to your fondest memories…birthdays, Halloween, sleepovers, vacations! Do you want to hold onto these memories until you are 100 years old? Join us for Scrapbooking Mania! Students will learn how to create perfect pages using matting, journaling, and unusual art accents. Bring your favorite photos and leave each class with beautiful scrapbook pages.

Simply Summer Crafting

Grades K-2

This class will allow students to enjoy the days of summer by creating projects that are fun, creative and relaxing. Project themes will focus on simple and colorful ideas such as ocean animals, nature, insects and much more. Students will have fun creating and sharing these summer inspired crafts.

Sports Kids

Grades K-3

Batter up! If you are a sports fan, this is the class for you! We will create many different crafts and projects to thrill any girl or boy athlete! After sharing a sports-themed story each day, we will make many fun items, including a frame to display one of your favorite team photos, a key chain, a necklace, and a water bottle holder. Various sports will be represented in this class and many crafts can be tailored to your favorite sport. Don't strike out; you won't want to miss this fun class!

Summertime Cupcakery & Edible Creations

Grades 2-5

Just when you thought you ate it all! Come one, come all to the summer edition of Cupcakery and Edible Creations. Decorate treats with a summertime flare! Create cute sea critters, icky insects, buckets of edible sand, a barbeque with sweet hamburgers and hot dogs and delicious circus animals. Bring your creative talents along with your sweet tooth and join us for some yummy delectable treats!! All new for 2009!

Summer Science Fun

Grades 1-5

Students will investigate the way things work through hands-on projects that focus on the “why” of science. You will learn how bubbles work, how to make a spud rocket, why a water strider is able to walk on water, and much more! Students will make ice cream from scratch as their final hands-on activity!

Travel to the Seven Continents

Grades K-4

Do you like to travel? Join me as we travel the seven continents, learning interesting facts and traditions of the different countries that make up each continent. Students will create their own world map and travel diary showcasing our exciting travels from continent to continent. Come and join us as we travel around the world!

Wild About the Rainforest

Grades K-3

If you would like to learn more about the animals that inhabit the rainforest, then this is the course for you! We will have fun constructing a Spider Monkey Mobile, a Howling Howler Monkey Mask and an Origami Tree Frog. We’ll also use recycled materials to create models of a Fruit Bat, a Curly-Haired Tarantula and much more. Each participant will also learn to draw some rainforest wildlife and create a rainforest scrapbook. If you’re wild about rainforests, you’ll be wild about these projects. Join us for a wild time!

Write–On!

Grades 3-5

Attention young authors! Do you love to write? In this course you will write and publish both poetry and creative stories. Students will start off reading inspirational poetry, then write and illustrate different forms of poetry. Students will publish their own creative writing as well, complete with illustrations! Young poets and authors will have the chance to sit in the "Author's Chair" and read their stories aloud to the class! Take home your published piece in your white book to show off to your family and friends and cherish forever! 14

Young Astronomers

Grades K-2

3- 2- 1 BLAST OFF!!!! Come on board the Summer Activities Program Space Shuttle for your very own space exploration. Join us as we travel the solar system and investigate the storms of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, Venus, our twin planet, and much more. Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses when we travel to the sun. Passports will be provided in class. By the time you return to Earth, you will have a fully stamped passport, art projects and a space journal with your illustrations and facts. Come and become an astronomy expert!

Young Master Gardeners

Grades K-5

This course is for the young gardener or for the student who would like to learn the basics of gardening. Students will have the opportunity to explore and learn all about seeds, plants, leaves and flowers. Students will be experimenting to find out how seeds and plants grow, which insects are helpful and harmful to plants, and much more. The brand new Mount Prospect Learning Garden will be the student’s laboratory! Come prepared to dig in the dirt, get a little dirty and become a master gardener!
