f you attended the May Chamber luncheon you heard first hand about the Leadership Hilliard program. Class members learn the history and inner workings of Hilliard including city government and the schools. They attend bimonthly classes designed to develop their own leadership and teambuilding skills. They also work on a group project. The most recent class developed a Leadership Hilliard website. The website will help to promote the program to the community, prospective class members and will help keep alumni of the program connected to each other. Group projects from previous Leadership Hilliard classes include a Rails to Trails Art Project where the class worked in conjunction with the Rails to Trails Coalition and local high schools to install student art work along the trail. Another group project resulted in the development of a community outreach pamphlet to serve as a reference to residents seeking various types of community assistance. The next class for 2007-08 is being formed and will begin in October. If you are interested in developing your leadership skills and becoming more involved in the Hilliard community, go to Leadership Hilliard’s website at or call the Chamber office.

Chair’s Perspective

written by Brett Febus

often turn everyday events into math. You’ll often hear me say, “It’s just a math problem”. As a business owner, I constantly focus on my favorite part of business math: Multiplication!

Chamber Luncheons for the Summer

e will not be having luncheons for the months of June or July. We will be having a luncheon on Friday, August 17 at Bonefish Grill so make sure that you put that date on your calendar!! There will be more information coming in future newsletters. Enjoy your summer!!

I once talked to a business owner with a goal of turning every customer into 10 more customers via referrals. Now we are talking about Multiplication’s best friend: Exponents.

Member-to-Member Discount Program

“Warm leads” are an easy sale. Customer referrals are warm leads. If a customer is truly happy with your product or service, they are happy to help you by referring business to you. Often though, you have to ask for the referral. Perhaps it is as simple as saying, “I’d appreciate it very much if you would recommend my service to others”. Make a goal of turning every customer you have into one more…and then two and then five and then ten more customers. You’ll be surprised how much easier (and inexpensive) it is to generate more business from your current customer base than it is to chase new business.

he new Member-to-Member Discount Program is off to a great start with several businesses already submitting their discounts. This program provides you the opportunity to promote your products and services to other chamber members on the chamber website. It offers you and your employees discounts on products and services from other Hilliard Chamber members. It will also help your business increase its visibility in the business community by offering a member discount. Participating members will have their business contact information and the discount available on the Chamber website. We will continue to promote this program in our newsletter so that our members can take advantage of this added member benefit. Look for our list of Member-to-Member discounts on our website beginning mid-June! Interested? Please contact the Chamber office at 876-7666 for information.

This adventure will also prompt you to pay more attention to your best customers. Who are your best 10 or 50 or 100 customers? When is the last time you did something for them… anything? Drop a note in the mail. Send a coupon thanking them for being a good customer. Stay in front of your current customers, and encourage them to help you find more customers. Soon, you’ll be experiencing the joy of multiplication in business. Brett
