WORKFORCE SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS (WSQ) CERTIFIED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS ASSISTANT PROGRAMME (In collaboration with Siemens Professional Education Berlin) FACT SHEET
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Siemens AG is one of the world’s largest high-tech manufacturing corporations and a leader in complex technologies, particularly in the Mechatronic1 Systems. The expertise of Siemens AG is now available through the Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certifications Programme (SMSCP) which is developed by the Siemens Technik Akademie Berlin, Siemens’s own elite international technical college. Its aim is to offer graduates from overseas colleges or universities an industrial certificate which guarantees a world-class training standard. This comprehensive industry-skills certification programme is offered by partnering schools worldwide including the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (North America), Nanjing College of Information Technology (China), Amatrol (U.S) and VCAT (Germany) and aims to equip workers in the precision engineering, mechatronics, medical technology, marine and electronics related industry sectors with up-to-date information in operations, maintenance and designing of an integrated mechatronic system. In Singapore, ITE and Siemens Professional Education (SPE) Berlin have entered into an agreement for ITE to deliver the Level 1 programme here. The SMSCP is aligned to the Precision Engineering Workforce Skills Qualifications (PE WSQ) framework. Trainees will be issued the WSQ Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant (WSQ CMSA) certificate upon successful completion of the programme and passing the modular assessments and the Siemens Level 1 Certification Examination. Level 1 of the programme focuses on the study of components or devices in terms of their roles within the machinery system and how the trainee can work to keep the system running at maximum capacity. Upon training completion, trainees will become more competent equipment operators as they can accurately trouble-shoot malfunctions and conduct preliminary fault-finding. Companies will also benefit as they can operate at maximum production capacity and reduced machine downtime.
Mechatronics (or Mechanical and Electronics Engineering) is the combination of electrical, mechanical and computer engineering.
COURSE MODULES The SMSCP consists of 3 levels of training, as follow: Level 1: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant Electrical Components Mechanical Components and Electric Drivers (Electro) Pneumatic and Hydraulic Circuits Digital Fundamentals and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Level 2: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Associate Process control technologies Introduction to Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Automation systems Motor control Mechanics and machine elements Manufacturing processes Level 3: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Professional Mechatronics System Design Customised Automation Solutions with TIA Diagnostics, Control Systems and Optimisation Dynamics of Machinery and Kinematics

TARGET AUDIENCE (FOR LEVEL 1) This programme is suitable for workers who are currently employed or for those who wish to be employed in the manufacturing & automation industry as: Mechatronic Systems Operator Machine/Equipment Operator Line Leader
PROGRAMME DETAILS/ COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS (FOR LEVEL 1) Participants are expected to enrol and complete all 4 modules of the Level 1 Programme. Duration of programme: Each module consists of 60 hours of theory lessons and practical work on mechatronic-based automation system and PC-based simulations. Training is conducted on a part-time basis, at least 2 sessions a week in the evenings, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. There is no specific entry requirement to qualify for the programme. However, possessing basic technical and mathematical knowledge would be advantageous. Training venue is at ITE, College West (Dover Campus) 20 Dover Drive Singapore 138682.
ASSESSMENT AND AWARD (FOR LEVEL 1) Participants will be required to sit for the modular assessment (a practical test and a theory test) at the end of every module. Upon completion of the 4 modules at Level 1, participants will sit for the Siemens Certified Mechatronic Assistant Level 1 Certification Examination. Participants will only be awarded the WSQ CMSA upon successfully passing the assessments for all 4 modules of the programme as well as the Siemens Level 1 Certification Examination. The certificate will also indicate the title of the PE WSQ modules that participants have passed.
BENEFITS Internationally-Recognised Certification The WSQ CMSA certification is jointly issued by WDA and SPE Berlin and is recognised both locally and internationally. In addition, trainees who complete Level 1 of the programme may attain the “Precision Engineering Workforce Skills Qualification Certificate” by completing another 9 modules of the PE WSQ programme, or the “Precision Engineering Workforce Skills Qualification Higher Certificate” by completing another 6 modules under the PE WSQ framework. Up-skilling Opportunities Workers can be up-skilled through hands-on training in complex mechatronic systems, systems management, troubleshooting and repair of systems malfunctions, systems design and process optimisation. Enhanced Career Progression Opportunities Workers who have undergone this programme will enjoy enhanced career progression and employment opportunities e.g. Trainees who are Machine 3
Operators can look forward to the possibility of becoming Senior Machine Operators after completing Level 1 of the programme (subject to good work performance and other factors). A Mechatronic Systems Technician who completes Level 2 of the programme may progress to become a Supervisor or Senior Technician while an Assistant Engineer who completes Level 3 of the programme may move up to the position of Engineer. Re-skilling Opportunities For workers from other industries who wish to secure employment in precision engineering, mechatronics, medical technology and electronics related sectors, this programme will facilitate their re-skilling for entry into the Automation and Machine Maintenance jobs in these industries.
COURSE FEES The nett course fees payable by Singapore Citizens/Singapore Permanent Residents is $1,068 per trainee per qualification for the Level 1 Programme, upon fulfilling the eligibility criteria below: Trainees who are either Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents. Trainees who are company-sponsored or self-sponsored. Trainees who achieve at least 75% training attendance for the modules and have sat for the required assessments. Trainees who have enrolled for the programme for courses commencing from 1 December 2008 to 31 December 2010.
