Police Academy
Basic Peace Officer Course
Student Information Packet
The Basic Peace Officer Course is a 680-hour program designed to prepare the student to
pass the Peace Officer licensing exam given by TCLEOSE.
            29 topics ranging from two hours to 48 hours in length are covered during the
            course.
            Approximately one-third of the class is devoted to developing the physical skills
            required to become a peace officer.

SCHEDULE
Day Academies are on the Fall and Spring semester schedules in Corsicana and Waxahachie.
           Day Academies run one semester
           Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm.

Night Academy is scheduled for either Waxahachie or Corsicana.
            Night Academy takes two semesters (Fall and Spring)
            Monday thru Thursday, 6:00 pm-10:00 pm.

ADMISSION STANDARDS
          Must be 21 years of age to be licensed (you must be 21 by the time your class
          graduates).
          No Class B Misdemeanor conviction in the past 10 years.
          No Class A Misdemeanor or felony conviction.
          No conviction of a family violence offense.
          Applicants must pass a physical examination, a psychological examination and a
          drug screen.
          Possess High school diploma OR GED OR Home School diploma.
          You must not be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
          You must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or
          ammunition.
          You must not have been discharged from military service under less than
          honorable conditions.
          Honorable discharge from the armed forces after at least 24 months of active
          duty service.

A complete criminal history will be conducted as part of the initial Registration Process
                     when the FAST APPLICATION is submitted.

                           REGISTRATION PROCESS

Contact the Academy to obtain a complete application packet.

Students must pre-register prior to the first day of classes.

PRE-REGISTRATION
Apply to Navarro College (Application for Admission):
       Fill out and return to the Office of Admissions and Records,
       Supply to the Registrar all pertinent information-
               Driver’s License,
               High School diploma, GED, Home School diploma, other college transcripts,
               Proof of residency and citizenship, if applicable.

Apply to Navarro College Police Academy (3 page application):
       Fill out and return to the Police Academy in Corsicana

Accuplacer Test
      Schedule and complete the Accuplacer Test at any NC campus. (Math, Reading and
      Writing sections)
      Bring test scores to Academy personnel immediately following the test.
       All applicants must submit current scores for admission to the Police Academy.
              The only exemption is if the student has successfully completed College Algebra
          with a 2.0 GPA; the math section of Accuplacer does not need to be completed.

FAST Application
     Fill out & take a completed FAST application to an approved FAST evaluation site.
             Follow directions on form by scheduling appointment at www.l1id.com or by
             calling 1-888-467-2080.
     There is a non-refundable fee of $9.95 for the background check.

     ONCE STUDENT HEARs FROM THE ACADEMY REGARDING THE RETURNED
        INFORMATION FROM THE FAST APPLICATION, PROCEED WITH THE
                    “AFTER PRE-REGISTRATION” ITEMS.

AFTER PRE-REGISTRATION
Submit to either Academy office:
              NC Police Academy Application,
              A1-Authorization to Release Information & Waiver,
              Authorization to Share Information and Waiver,
              a copy of your Birth Certificate,
              high school diploma/GED/Home School diploma,
              a copy of your driver’s license (front and back),
              a copy of Military Discharge, if applicable.

Complete FINANCIAL AID forms & process:
             Go online www.navarrocollege.edu
             Then to ‘financial aid’.
Read the information on Veteran’s Benefits and other types of grants and loans available.

Contact the Financial Aid office at the campus nearest you or drop by and visit with them for
any questions you may have or to begin the process.

Schedule Physical Exam:
             Submit doctor completed L-2 Physical Exam form.
Schedule Psychological Exam:
             Submit doctor completed L-3 Psychological Exam form.
Purchase:
             Uniform & Required clothing (see clothing information below),
             Books (see book information below),
             any other designated materials.
Pay Tuition & Fees:
             Payment for class may only be accepted at the Cashier’s/Business Office on any
             NC Campus.

Maximum class size for the Basic Peace Officer Course is thirty (30) students. Classes will be
filled on a first come-first served basis according to pre-registration and the application
process.

Tuition MUST be paid by CASH, FINANCIAL AID, CHECK OR MONEY ORDER ONLY, made
payable to Navarro College. Tuition must be paid prior to the first day of class. Payment will
be given to Cashier’s/Business office on any NC Campus. NO funds will be accepted at the
police academy.
                  Ammunition and Insurance fees are subject to change.

FINANCIAL AID
Financial Aid is available to Basic Peace Officer Course students who qualify. It takes several
weeks to process the application for Financial Aid. Please apply well in advance of the

Veterans/Texas Veterans may qualify for financial aid through the Veterans Certifying Official
at Navarro College. It takes several weeks to process Veterans benefits. Please apply well in

REFUND POLICY
Tuition and fees will be refunded to students who drop out of the Basic Peace Officer Course
at the following rate:

                              Prior to 1st Class Day            100%
                              1st through 5th Class Day         80%
                              6th through 10th Class Day        70%
                              11th through 15th Class Day       50%
                              16th through 20th Class Day       25%
                              After the 20th Class Day          0%

                                 DETAILS OF THE ACADEMY

BOOKS
               Texas Criminal Laws & Motor Vehicle Handbook, 2009 Edition,
               Navarro College Police Academy Basic Peace Officer Course Student Study
               Guide,
               Action Spanish for Law Enforcement.
Books are available for purchase at the Navarro College Bookstore and MUST be purchased
prior the start of the first day of class.

SUPPLIES
              A 5” inch are larger, three-ring binder,
              Pens,
              Paper,
              Highlighters, etc..

UNIFORMS
             Academy shirt (NC Bookstore),
             Dark navy pants,
             Plain black uniform trouser belt (if your gun belt has a small inner belt with it then
             you will not need another belt),
             Plain black, polish able uniform boots (no pointed toes, tennis shoes or slip on
             low quarter shoes).
All Basic Peace Officer students are required to be in uniform on the first day of class.

WORKOUT APPAREL - DAY CLASS ONLY
         Black shorts or sweat pants (no logos or emblems),
         White round neck T-shirts (no logos or emblems),

             White athletic socks.
All Basic Peace Officer students will be required to participate in physical training.

EQUIPMENT to be furnished by the student:
         Handgun -                                               Four (4) black belt keepers**

             .45 ACP                                             One (1) pair of clear safety
             .357 Sig                                            glasses
         Black Holster**                                         One (1) pair of handcuffs with
         *this must be a duty holster*                           key
         Black Police Style Duty Belt**                          One (1) black handcuff case**
         Three (3) magazines and pouch
                                                       **Nylon items are acceptable**
           Equipment may be purchased at any law enforcement supply outlet.

The following is a list of the acceptable firearms for use in the class. No other weapons
will be authorized for use in the class. No revolver ammunition will be furnished by the Police
Academy:

The academy has a limited number of Glock 17, 9mm pistols, spare magazines, and leather
gear available for rental to students who do not have their. Rental fee is $100. Weapons are
available on a first-come, first-served basis.

OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME COMMITMENTS
Driving Course curriculum - There will be a required weekend commitment from student to
participate. Students will leave campus on Friday evening and return home on Sunday.
Expenses for the weekend will be the student’s responsibility.

Firearm Training - Students will be required to qualify during the day and at night therefore,
students should plan to be at the range one evening during the week of Firearm Training.

There may be an occasional need for students to stay during evening hours. Should this occur,
students will receive advanced notice.

If a student is currently employed by a law enforcement agency and holds a state issued
license (jailer, dispatcher, etc.) you may NOT need to get another psychological exam,
physical exam or be fingerprinted. Please check with Police Academy Coordinator.

A student who fails to report a criminal record to the Police Academy Coordinator prior
          to admission to the class may be removed from the class at a later date.

Physical exam and Drug screen
The student may use their personal physician for the physical and drug screen. The physician
must complete the L-2 and must be returned to the Navarro College Police Academy.
