State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster, State Superintendent ****NEWS RELEASE**** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DPI 2008-26 Thursday, February 7, 2008 CONTACT: Patrick Gasper, Communications Officer, (608) 266-3559 Student leaders to learn about careers from state officials MADISON—Students from around the state are in Madison Thursday, February 7, for State Government Day, an event organized by the initiative known as All CTSO, which is a partnership of Wisconsin career and technical student organizations. State Government Day brings together state-level officers (and this year, one national officer) of six career and technical organizations (CTSOs) to listen, meet with, and ask questions of legislators and government officials on career and workforce topics. A total of 53 students planned to attend. “State Government Day follows in the strong tradition of the All CTSO initiative, by providing an opportunity to learn citizenship, teamwork, and leadership skills that are vital for students preparing for life and work in the 21st century,” said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. Speakers at the 2008 event include Representative Joan Ballweg, Representative Barbara Gronemus, Senator John Lehman, Department of Workforce Development Secretary Roberta Gassman, and DPI Assistant State Superintendent Debbie Mahaffey. Following a tour of the State Capitol and large group events in the North Hearing Room, the students will convene in smaller groups based on geography and meet with their state legislators. The six CTSOs are DECA, an association of marketing students; FBLA, an association of business students; FCCLA, an association of family and consumer students; FFA, an association of agricultural education students; HOSA, an association of health education students; and SkillsUSA, an association of technology students. State-level officers of these groups are typically in high school, with the exception of FFA officers, who have recently graduated from high school. (more) Mailing Address: P.O. These groups help students develop civic, technical, and social skills, and a wholesome attitude about living and working. Wisconsin started the All CTSO initiative over 15 years ago with joint state officer training, and became the first state in the nation to employ this model of collaboration between the different groups. The idea has since been copied by other states. Today the tradition continues in Wisconsin with shared All CTSO leadership events for all members. ### ATTACHMENT: Following is a list of students scheduled to attend State Government Day, arranged by place of residence.
