What is CADCAM?
Computer-Aided design and Computer-Aided
Manufacture (CADCAM) is the phrase that is
often used to describe Delcam’s core business.
Essentially Delcam provides the computer software
tools to design complex 3D shapes and then drive
computer-controlled machine tools to cut the
shapes accurately from any number of materials
from hard steel to soft foam or wood. However, in
recent years the company has expanded its remit
considerably to provide computer software tools
that now encompass the entire manufacturing

Each product can be used independently to
solve a specific customer’s problem, providing
the perfect point solution, for example, adding
programming for high speed machining or
extending an existing CAD capability to support
more complex 3D shapes. Offering a full suite of
products enables Delcam to combine any number
of individual elements to provide an integrated
package to meet a customer’s needs. Tailoring
solutions in this way ensures that Delcam can
match a company’s needs today, but also grow
to match their needs tomorrow.
Recently Delcam added PS-Team to its product
range. PS-Team was originally developed to allow
the complex Delcam business to run smoothly

Life in Birmingham
Birmingham has undergone a major renaissance in recent years and now
offers a variety of attractions including one of the top European shopping
centres, premier sports facilities, an extensive choice of restaurants, clubs and
bars as well as being home of the world famous Birmingham Royal Ballet. We
also have four first class theatres and a range of fascinating heritage buildings,
museums and art galleries, and many fantastic live music venues.
Living and working in Birmingham
Although the city has been constantly changing and large amounts of
redevelopment have already taken place and are continuing to do so, it also
has a vast amount of green open spaces with 13.5 square miles of parkland;
this includes Sutton Park, the largest urban park in Europe. Birmingham is
closest to some of the most beautiful countryside in England including the
Cotswolds, the Malverns, the Severn Valley and Cannock Chase.
Sport in Birmingham
If you love sport you can’t go wrong with the Premier League and Nationwide
League football, test match cricket, rugby, international tennis, golf and

Hugh Richard Owen Humpherys OBE MSc
Hugh Humphreys, is one of the founder directors. Mr. Humphreys trained as an
aircraft engineer and worked for British Aerospace for 10 years before leaving to
study for his Masters Degree in Production Management at Birmingham University.
He joined the Delta Group in 1974 as an advisor on production and management
techniques. Mr. Humphreys led a staff/management buy out in 1989 and them floated
the company on AIM in 1997. He was awarded the OBE in 1994 recognising Delcam’s
Edward Barrett Lambourne BSc MSc C.Eng. FIET
Edward Lambourne, joined Delta plc in 1973. He was responsible for the initial
introduction of CADCAM software into Delta following a two year secondment to
Cambridge University to help develop the DUCT CADCAM system, which was the
original foundation for Delcam’s products. Mr Lambourne was one of the founders of
the business within Delta plc and he was instrumental in the buyout of the company
from Delta in 1989. Mr Lambourne is responsible for the Company’s development
and IT systems activity, which includes one of the largest mechanical CADCAM
development teams in the UK. Mr Lambourne has a Bachelors degree in Mechanical
Engineering from Nottingham University and a Masters degree from Cambridge
University for CADCAM research. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the
Institution of Engineering & Technology.
Mr Lambourne commented:
“During my two years research project at Cambridge, I was part of the team at the University Engineering
Department led by Donald Welbourn that invented the DUCT CAD/CAM system. My Cambridge MSc thesis
was on the subject of blending intersecting surfaces, an essential requirement for Delta to be able to
model and machine body dies for water taps using CAD/CAM.
After spending two years on secondment in Cambridge, I returned to Delta’s site at Dartmouth Street to
join Hugh Humphreys, who specialised in the introduction of new manufacturing methods, in introducing
CAD/CAM technology to the Delta Group. We quickly realised that there were big opportunities for DUCT
in the mouldmaking industry and with the encouragement of the Delta Group Chairman we were able to
start building a team that eventually became Delcam.
Looking back, Delcam is an excellent example of how university research can be spun out to create
a new small business that can be grown into a significant global player. It is fitting that the Delta and
Cambridge elements are still reflected in the company’s name. Although Hugh and I were privileged to
have the opportunity to start this business, it is the team that we have grown here that is the reason for
