PDE Announces New Academic Standards for Career and Work
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Bureau of Career and Technical Education
is pleased to announce the approval of the new Academic Standards for Career Education and
Work.

The standards are part of the Chapter 4 regulations and have been approved by the
Pennsylvania State Board of Education and the State General Assembly. The standards were
published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin, Volume 36, Number 27, under State Board of Education,
Rules and Regulations, on July 8th, 2006. A complete copy of the Career Education and Work
Standards can be accessed from the web at www.pabulletin.com/secure/data/vol36/36-
27/1267.html.

The adoption of the standards requires all public schools to begin implementation in the 2006-
2007 school year. These standards address the need for all students to participate in age
appropriate activities structured within a comprehensive career development program at all
levels: elementary, middle, and high school. The standards will reinforce the vital link between
the student's educational achievement and college and career success.

In an effort to provide technical assistance for all schools to implement the standards into the
classroom, PDE has sponsored an on-line Toolkit. This Toolkit contains a wide variety of
resources, which can be downloaded for teacher and counselor use. The Toolkit can be accessed
at http://www.pacareerstandards.com/.

You will be receiving posters with the New Academic Standards for Career Education and
Work information from PDE this fall.
