LEADMILL NIGHT CLUB 1:
PEOPLE AND JOBS
Leadmill Night Club is a well known venue in central Sheffield. Its customers are
mainly young adults. Click on the sound buttons on each of the images to learn
about some of the people who work at the Leadmill and to find out about the jobs
that they do. Click on the images to find out more about these people’s work.
“My names Julie Tippins, I’m the Chief
Executive at the Leadmill.
My main job is developing a strategic
direction for the Leadmill and making sure it

is implemented throughout, so that when we
make a decision about the way the business
is going to go, I can talk to all the managers
here and make sure that they are all ‘in-
sync’, making sure it all happens quite
smoothly, right through to delivery of the
customers.”

“I’m Rhona Fisher and my job title is
‘Personnel/Administration Manager’.
I am an HR specialist, responsible for the
recruiting and training of staff, but I also have
an operational duty down here, which can be
from organising the cleaning service, up to
making sure someone is responsible for the
disco sound and lighting”

I had a lot of experience when I came into the
job, obviously, I’m qualified, ACCA. I have
found this extremely different to anything I have
ever done before. 2

has happened previously, in order to teach

“Hi, I’m Ian and I work in the Accounts
Department, I’m the Accounts Assistant.
My job basically entails paying all the bills, paying
the bands; make sure they have got money for
the riders.”

here at the Leadmill.

I book the gigs down here. I am also the promoter
for the Monday Student night and the Saturday
Indie night.”

“Hi, I’m Rachel, I’m Assistant Catering Manager.
I work on the bar, make sure that we are fully staffed,
we have enough stock on the bars, and the tills are
up, the prices are all right and that the customers
have a good night.”

“I’m Chris White, I’m Box Office Manager and
Promoter, which means I handle all the venue’s
advanced ticket sales in various outlets
throughout the city, on the Web and on the
phones. 4
I am also responsible for various events that we
promote, so I do all the marketing and book the
acts.”

“My name’s Ged Warren, I’m the Operations
Manager at the Leadmill.
I head a team of people who deal with all the
administrative and support services at the Leadmill.
These include;
• Finance, so that’s dealing with all the money
in the organisation.
• Administration, which includes buying and
selling of office equipment and all that sort of
thing. Ged
• I am also responsible for the Technical
Team, which deal with all the lighting and
sound services, so this is the lighting for all
events, whether it’s discos, whether it’s live
music, lighting on stage and so on. We set
the sound systems which includes the PA’s
and all the lighting.
• Also, building maintenance and cleaning for
the organisation, so that is preparing for
events, making sure that we are ‘spic-and-

span’ for when we open our doors to the
public.”
“We also have a number of people that
we employ on a contract basis, rather
than having them as actual employees
of the organisation. That means that
we might pull them in for specific
things, like say, mixing a band or
lighting a disco because we can’t really
employ them on a full weekly basis”
